Mid-South Wrestling: Q3 1981
In the 3rd quarter of 1981, Orndorff faces challenges from three J’s (Jim, Jake, and JYD), DiBiase returns, Bob Roop and Bob Orton Jr. debut and both “break bad”, and more!

NEW TO THE TERRITORY THIS QUARTER
(wrestlers either making their first-ever appearance as a regular in this territory or appearing in a significantly different role/gimmick than when they were here previously)
BOB ORTON JR. – After spending about two years working for ICW (Poffo), Orton Jr. came here in July. His first appearance on TV saw him wrestle cleanly and defeat Carl Fergie. Two weeks later in a TV match with Tony Charles, Orton though he had the bout won but the referee restarted it and Orton snapped, beating the tar out of Charles as television time expired.
BOB ROOP – Like Orton, Roop came here after spending a couple of years working for Poffo. Also like Orton, he was originally positioned as a babyface. In his first TV match, he defeated Super Destroyer to win the Louisiana title. And again like Orton, he turned heel not too long after coming in. It began when DiBiase & Roop teamed up against the Samoans. Roop had one of the Samoans pinned when their manager Ernie Ladd popped up on the apron. DiBiase pulled Ladd inside the ring, which led to the referee DQing the Samoans. Roop was upset that DiBiase’s actions may have cost them the titles. The following week, there was another miscommunication when Roop faced the Great Kabuki which led to Roop losing the match and then attacking Ted afterwards. While this turn was actually filmed towards the end of this quarter, it didn't air in most markets until October. As such, Roop is listed as a babyface on the SPOT Ratings chart. You'll notice his SPOT drops slightly towards the end of the quarter; this is indicative of what I refer to as a 'holding pattern', when a turn has already been filmed but not yet aired and the wrestler is placed in matches against mid-carders so as not to "give away" that he already turned. A similar thing happened with Orndorff in the 2nd quarter of '81.
IRON SHEIK – While he wrestled here in his rookie year (1973) as Ali Vaziri, this was the first time he was here as The Iron Sheik. He came in from Mid-Atlantic in September and stayed through the following January, when he went to Florida.

NORTH AMERICAN HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE
Paul Orndorff defeated Jake Roberts to win the title on July 4th at the Superdome in New Orleans. A first-hand account from Brian Ockman has Jake bleeding profusely but refusing to quit, when Grizzly Smith (who had NOT been acknowledged on TV as Jake’s father) came down to ringside and threw in the towel.
MID-SOUTH TAG TEAM TITLES
Junkyard Dog & Dick Murdoch beat the Samoans (Afa & Sika) on July 4th at the Superdome to win the titles. Afa & Sika regained them on July 26th in Monroe.
LOUISIANA HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE
Bob Roop defeated The Super Destroyer at a TV taping on July 22nd in Shreveport to win the title.
MISSISSIPPI HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE
Bob Orton Jr. beat Don Diamond to win the title, with sources reporting the switch as happening on August 6th in Greenville.
U.S. TITLE
While it was called the U.S. title here, this appears to be the American Heavyweight title from World Class. It is believed that The Great Kabuki defeated Kerry Von Erich to win the title in this territory, on September 25th in Shreveport.
