McGuirk Wrestling Territory: Q4 1978

In the 4th quarter of 1978, Rock Hunter gets his heels organized, two new titles are introduced and three titles change hands on Christmas Day at the Superdome, the Ladd-Candy feud comes to a conclusion, and more!

Here is the roster for the quarter. Wrestlers are listed in descending order by their average SPOT Rating during the quarter:

NEW TO THE TERRITORY THIS QUARTER
(wrestlers either making their first-ever appearance as a regular in this territory, their first appearance since Sep 1959, or appearing in a significantly different role/gimmick than when they were here previously)

ASSASSIN #2 – Roger Smith wrestled under a number of masked gimmicks over the years, including three separate masked teams with Don Bass as his partner (The A-Team, the Interns, and Fire & Flame). He also wrestled as Bull Zomar, Roger Mason, Buford Maddox, and Dirty Rhodes. Roger had been wrestling in Southeastern teaming up with Randy Colley as the Assassins and left to team up with Jody Hamilton (who was here as the Assassin) and the Angel (Frank Morrell).

FRANK DUSEK – Frank was the son of Wally Dusek (who was billed as part of the Dusek Riot Squad but was not related to the four brothers). He worked as a referee for Mid-Atlantic at one point, and his matches here may have been his first as a wrestler. He also worked as a commentator, ring announcer, manager, and booker over the years.

GAMA SINGH – Born Gadowar Singh Sahota in Punjab, India, Gama is perhaps best associated with Stampede Wrestling, where he held the British Commonwealth Mid-Heavyweight title several times and feuded with Owen and Bruce Hart, Davey Boy Smith, and Chris Benoit to name a few. In the late 1970s he ventured down to the U.S. and wrestled in Southern California, World Class, Southwest, Central States, and for McGuirk.

GARY DEAN – I don’t have much information on this wrestler. A “Gary Dean” worked for George Culkin in Mississippi in the fall of 1977 very briefly, then shows up in Tennessee working for Gulas in early 1978, then shows up here for about six weeks. While it’s always possible he’s better known under another name, he likely wasn’t anybody of note. At this point in time nobody seems to have any other info on him.

KARL VON KRUPP – Born George Momberg in the Netherlands, Krupp grew up in Nazi-occupied territory, which very well may have played a role in his deciding to portray a German heel for much of his wrestling career. His earliest documented matches are in 1966 in Canada, though some sources state he had been wrestling prior to that. After a few years wrestling as George Momberg and Dutch Momberg, he first used the Karl Krupp name in Stampede in 1971. He would tweak the ring name at different times, sometimes being Karl Von Krupp, sometimes Killer Karl Krupp, and sometimes Baron Von Krupp.

RON SLINKER – Born in Washington state in 1945, Slinker studied martial arts and holds black belts in judo and Yoshukai karate. After serving in the Marine Corps, he went to the University of Tampa and then worked as a police officer in Tampa. He first started wrestling in 1977 in Florida. Slinker generally used a martial arts gimmick and would often compete in “judo jacket” matches when involved in a feud. He later worked as a manager and promoter in Florida, where he reportedly told a young up-and-comer named Rob Szatkowski to change his ring name to “Rob Van Dam”.

MANAGERS
Rock Hunter was managing Kurt Von Hess & Siegfried Stanke at the beginning of the quarter. At some point, he switched to managing the Assassin, Assassin #2, and the Angel. This stable was referred to as the “Rock Hunter Organization”, a term used in other places where Hunter was a manager as well.

CHAMPIONS & KNOWN TITLE CHANGES

NOTE: Title histories are sometimes not “linear”; title changes can be acknowledged in one market but not others, or perhaps acknowledged in others at a later date. Also, the concept of titles being “held up” can sometimes refer to a town-specific angle to build to a rematch and may not be acknowledged in other markets. This represents my best effort to accurately portray title histories using the tools now available. While I do try to put these histories together on my own, I often refer to wrestling-titles.com

NORTH AMERICAN TITLE
Ernie Ladd was the champion at the beginning of the quarter. Ray Candy won the title from Ladd on November 17th in Shreveport. Ladd regained it on December 25th in New Orleans., winning the title “by forfeit”. Candy did not appear at the show, thought he did not leave the territory. Since the promotion had the week before Christmas off, my educated guess is that Candy went home to Georgia and weather conditions prevented him from making this show.

U.S. TAG TEAM TITLES
Bobby Jaggers & Jerry Brown were the champions at the beginning of the quarter. There may have been a quickie switch in Tulsa, with Mike George & Jim Shields winning the titles on September 25th and losing them back to Jaggers & Brown on October 2nd, but this is unconfirmed. Mike George & Randy Tyler won the titles on November 18th in Tulsa. On December 1st in Shreveport, George & Tyler were defending the titles against Jaggers & Brown in Shreveport. Brown was “injured” during the match and “had to leave”. Ron Bass took his place mid-match, and Jaggers & Bass won the match and were initially awarded the titles. The belts ended up being held up as a result of this controversy, and a tournament was held on December 25th in New Orleans, which was won by Dusty Rhodes & Andre the Giant.

LOUISIANA TITLE
Jose Lothario was the champion at the beginning of the quarter. The Assassin beat Lothario to win the title at some point between October 13th (when Lothario won a title bout in Shreveport) and October 31st (when Assassin was billed as champion in Alexandria). The switch may have occurred at an October 14th TV taping in Shreveport. Jerry Stubbs beat the Assassin on December 25th in New Orleans to win the title.

LOUISIANA TAG TEAM TITLES
Ricky Fields & Terry Lathan were the champions for the entire quarter.

MISSISSIPPI TITLE
A one-night tournament was held on November 6th in Jackson to crown a Mississippi champion for the first time in this territory since 1970. Jerry Stubbs won the tournament.

ARKANSAS TITLE
A one-night tournament was held in Little Rock on October 26th to crown a champion for the first time since 1974. Ernie Ladd won the tournament, and then lost the title a week later to Ray Candy in the same city.

BRASS KNUCKS TITLE
Ron Bass was the champion for the entire quarter.

Here are the top feuds in the territory for the quarter:

ANATOMY OF A FEUD

Here’s a look at the feud between Ernie Ladd and Ray Candy, looking at all the known matches between them (during this quarter only) with stipulations noted where available. The matches are arranged chronologically by city, so you can easily see which cities had multiple matches between them.

Where results are available, they are listed. In some cases, details on the finish or any angles that occurred are given as well.

Keep in mind that some newspapers didn't list details, so just because a match isn't specified as a title match, we don't necessarily know for a fact that it was non-title and the same can apply for stipulation bouts.

The feud between these two men lasted for over a year, with their first match occurring on December 27, 1977 and the last advertised match being for January 5, 1979. After their steel cage match main evented the Superdome over the summer, the two went in different directions for a couple of months before coming back together to finish the feud. For much of the feud’s duration, Ladd would call Candy an “Uncle Tom”. The feud clearly did big business in this territory to last as long as it did. It was an integral part of two Superdome cards, and they also feuded later in 1979 in Georgia.

NEW ORLEANS, LA

It is believed that Ray Candy had legitimate transportation issues (the whole crew had been given the week before Christmas off) and could not make the show (he likely went home to Georgia for the holidays).
