The McGuirk/Watts Wrestling Almanac - Chapter 7 (Q2 1961)
Welcome to Chapter 7 of The McGuirk/Watts Wrestling Almanac, an in-depth data-driven look at the wrestling territory run by Leroy McGuirk (and later, Bill Watts). The territory is most commonly known as Tri-State Wrestling and/or Mid-South Wrestling, though neither of those names were actually used until September 1979 when Watts split from McGuirk.
Each chapter covers a three-month period of time and will list our exclusive statistics:
1) SPOT (Statistical Position Over Time) Ratings, which measure a wrestlers average position on the cards
2) FEUD (Frequent Encounters Using Data) Scores, which measure the frequency and breadth of a series of matches between the same wrestlers (or tag teams)
In addition, we list the advertised lineups for all known house shows in the territory during the time period, along with an index of newcomers and other wrestlers (special attractions, women, midgets, etc) that passed through the territory.

NEW TO THE TERRITORY THIS QUARTER
BOB BOYER – Boyer turned pro in 1955 and this was his first stint in the area. Later in his career he used the ring name Bobby Bold Eagle in Indianapolis and the AWA among other places.
BRUISER COLLINS – Roy Lee Albern turned pro in 1959, at first using the names Roy Collins and Pretty Boy Collins. He changed his name to Bruiser Collins when he came here, but the name change he made AFTER he left here was the one that stuck: he became a staple of 50th State Big Time Wrestling in Hawaii for over a decade as Ripper Collins.
DANNY McSHAIN – A 10-time holder of the National Wrestling Association’s World Light Heavyweight championship, McShain also had one run with the National Wrestling Alliance’s World Junior Heavyweight title from November 1951 through August 1953. Some sources state that Danny, a native of Arkansas, turned pro on the day of his 18th birthday. He had numerous stints in this area over the years, but this was his first time here since late 1956.
JOE McCARTHY – McCarthy, billed as a “(rac)coon hunter” from Tiger Tail, Tennessee, wrestled mostly in the south over a 13 year career. This was his first stint in the territory. He often used a toe hold as his finisher. When Tarzan Baxter came here starting in the late ‘60s, he was billed as McCarthy’s nephew and it was said that McCarthy taught him the toe hold.
TINY SMITH – Aurelian Smith Sr., better known as Grizzly Smith, started his wrestling career in 1960 after working in an oil field. Early in his career he used the ring names Tiny Smith, Tiny Evans, Jake Smith and Tiny Anderson in different territories. Smith had three children that wrestled: Jake Roberts, Sam Houston and Rockin’ Robin.

Gorgeous George – The original Gorgeous George (George Wagner) came in to wrestle Mike Clancy on April 17th in Tulsa. This was George’s first appearance here since November 1959. Clancy, former NWA World Junior Heavyweight champ, was being pushed as a potential challenger to Danny Hodge and defeated the Gorgeous one in two straight falls.
