The McGuirk/Watts Wrestling Almanac - Chapter 9 (Q4 1961)
Welcome to Chapter 9 of The McGuirk/Watts Wrestling Almanac, an in-depth data-driven look at the wrestling territory run by Leroy McGuirk (and later, Bill Watts). The territory is most commonly known as Tri-State Wrestling and/or Mid-South Wrestling, though neither of those names were actually used until September 1979 when Watts split from McGuirk.
Each chapter covers a three-month period of time and will list our exclusive statistics:1) SPOT (Statistical Position Over Time) Ratings, which measure a wrestlers average position on the cards
2) FEUD (Frequent Encounters Using Data) Scores, which measure the frequency and breadth of a series of matches between the same wrestlers (or tag teams)
In addition, we list the advertised lineups for all known house shows in the territory during the time period, along with an index of newcomers and other wrestlers (special attractions, women, midgets, etc) that passed through the territory.

NEW TO THE TERRITORY THIS QUARTER
ALEX PEREZ – Before getting into wrestling, Perez was a Golden Gloves boxer, a semi-pro baseball player and a deputy for the Potter County (Texas) Sheriff’s office. He had a thirty-year career in wrestling, spending much of his time in Amarillo.
BING KI LEE – Philip Lee Hahn wrestled under the ring names of Felipe Ham Lee, Ham (or Hahn) Lee and Bing Ki Lee among other names. He was a significant star in Mexico and Hawaii for much of the ‘60s.
JIMMY QUINN – I don’t have much in the way info on this wrestler. He made some appearances earlier in the year in Louisiana (before McGuirk started running in the state) and made some appearances in East Tennessee in 1962.
JOHNNY DEMCHUCK – Demchuck is believed to have been born in Russia. He spent a couple of years wrestling in the United Kingdom in the late 30s, then spent the rest of his career in Canada and the U.S. According to the Wrestling Heritage web site (wrestlingheritage.co.uk), Demchuck suffered a heart attack during a match in Victoria, British Columbia and was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.
JOHNNY HEIDMANN – His last name was often spelled as Heidman or Heidemann, but in this territory it was more often than not spelled Heidmann. Originally spotted as an amateur by three of the four Dusek brothers, he is most associated with promoter Jim Crockett Sr. He worked for Crockett in the ring (mostly as a wrestler and sometimes as a referee) and in the office.
MIGHTY YANKEE I & MIGHTY YANKEE II – This version of the Mighty Yankees tag team was comprised of Roger Mackay and Herbert Knotts (who wrestled as Buddy Knox for much of his career). Knotts had worked here frequently during his career, but this was his first time in the area since 1949 and his only time under a mask. Mackay had been here once before, a brief run in 1953, also unmasked.
RUSSIAN ANGEL – Wrestled under the name Tony Angelo for most of his career, but from 1961 to 1963 he worked in a few territories as the Russian Angel or the Russian Crusher.
TUFFY TRUESDALE – Tuffy was probably one of the two best-known trainers of wrestling bears, the other being Dave McKigney (aka Gene DuBois). Tuffy’s original four-legged companion/opponent was an alligator, but he added a bear (a black bear from Canada named Victor) to his “stable” at some point, eventually phasing out the alligator and focusing on bears for most of his career.
WALDO VON ERICH – This was Waldo’s first stint in the territory, though he would come back in the 70s for a few significant runs. Originally used the ring name Waldo Von Seiber until Fritz Von Erich took a liking to him and the two first worked regularly as a “brother” tag team in 1958 Minneapolis.

ANIMALS
Tuffy Truesdale, who came here in October for four weeks, didn’t come alone. He brought Victor the Wrestling Bear and an alligator. He wrestled against the alligator on several shows, whereas the bear was mostly used for battle royals. And yes, I did calculate SPOT Ratings for the two animals. The alligator had a .59 SPOT and the bear had a .63 SPOT
