The McGuirk/Watts Wrestling Almanac - Chapter 10 (Q1 1962)
Welcome to Chapter 10 of The McGuirk/Watts Wrestling Almanac, an in-depth data-driven look at the wrestling territory run by Leroy McGuirk (and later, Bill Watts). The territory is most commonly known as Tri-State Wrestling and/or Mid-South Wrestling, though neither of those names were actually used until September 1979 when Watts split from McGuirk.
Each chapter covers a three-month period of time and will list our exclusive statistics:
1) SPOT (Statistical Position Over Time) Ratings, which measure a wrestlers average position on the cards
2) FEUD (Frequent Encounters Using Data) Scores, which measure the frequency and breadth of a series of matches between the same wrestlers (or teams)
In addition, we list the advertised lineups for all known house shows in the territory during the time period, an index of newcomers and other wrestlers (special attractions, women, midgets, etc) that passed through the territory, and a match-by-match, town-by-town recap of at least one feud during the quarter.

NEW TO THE TERRITORY THIS QUARTER
(wrestlers either making their first-ever appearance as a regular in this territory, their first appearance since Oct 1959, or appearing in a radically different role/gimmick than when they were here previously)
FRANKIE CAIN – After spending several years wrestling as Frankie Cain, he teamed up with Rocky Smith in 1966 to form the masked tag team the Infernos. Rocky’s brother Curtis replaced Cain in that team after a few years and Cain went on to work as the Great Mephisto.
GREAT MATSUDA – Yasuhiro Kojima, better known to wrestling fans as Hiro Matsuda, was billed as “Great Matsuda” here early in his career, though in other territories he was billed as Hiro Matsuda. After breaking in with the JWA under Rikidozan, a disagreement led to Matsuda quitting and emigrating to Peru, with the hopes of eventually being able to wrestle in the United States. A stint in Mexico in 1960 was the first step towards that, and his earliest matches on U.S. soil were in East Texas in 1961. Matsuda became the first Japanese wrestler to win the NWA World Junior Heavyweight title when he defeated Danny Hodge in 1964.
JACKIE NICHOLS – Nichols had been a professional wrestler dating back to the mid-30s. While he did wrestle in this area a few times over the course of his career, this was his first stint in the territory since 1950. Nichols appears to have retired from the ring in October ’62. Later in the decade he purchased the Steakhouse Inn in Wiscasset, Maine and renamed it Forrest Inn. However, many locals (including Jackie’s wife) referred to it as “the Bloody Bucket”, as it was said to attract a rough crowd and was host to boxing matches (allegedly both official and unofficial).
JAN MADRID – Jan wrestled full-time in various territories for a little over a decade in the 50s and 60s and had a few stints on the west coast and Canada in the early 70s. He promoted in West Virginia later in the decade; a notable incident there saw his entire crew go on strike right before a live TV taping; Madrid ended up wrestling an impromptu match against one of the police officers who was there to work as security. Madrid was joined by a “brother” around this time, Gene Madrid (aka Gypsy Joe aka Gilberto Melendez).
JESSE JAMES – Born in Houston in 1917, Demitros Stephanos Tztizikas (sounds like a villain on Days of our Lives!) turned pro at the age of 16 or 17. He first used the ring name Jimmy James in East Texas but used the name Jesse James in other territories. His career appears to have lasted until the early 70s. There is a noticeable gap in his career in the early 1940s, which may indicate that he served in the military during World War II.
JOE TOMASSO – Best known as Tiger Joe Tomasso, the Canadian-born Tomasso spent the bulk of his career in the great white north. This was his only stint in the McGuirk territory. He also wrestled as “The Bat” in some places.
KIT FOX – Billed from Anadarko, OK, "Indian Chief" Kit Fox had numerous stints here dating back to 1952. He was involved in an auto accident in Oklahoma City in July 1966, filing a $154,000 lawsuit against the other driver the following month (results of that suit are unknown). An article about the lawsuit quotes Fox as saying he suffered “nervous shock, whiplash and neck injury and that the accident damaged his ability to earn $10,000 to $15,000 a year as a wrestler.” That equates to between $80K-$120K today (perhaps it should be taken with a grain of salt).
LOUIE TILLET – Considered as one of the top tier bookers in all of pro wrestling, holding the book at times in Georgia, Florida, Southern California and Southeastern to name a few. This was his first of two stints for McGuirk. Held tag team titles in numerous areas with a wide variety of partners including Jackie Fargo, Al Costello, Butcher Vachon, Tarzan Tyler and Dennis Stamp.
PRINCE OMAR – Wrestled primarily as Prince Omar over the course of a 30-year career, but also used the names Omar Kahn, Omar Khayam/Khyam/Kiyam and the Green Ghost.

Here’s where things get interesting. Clancy was finishing up (he lost to Waldo in a loser leave town match AND a cage match earlier in the week) to go work for Gulas. You would think Waldo would win the Joplin match, which is Clancy’s last date in the territory. This makes me think Waldo’s knee injury here was legitimate; indeed, he does not appear on three shows he was advertised for the following week. But the really interesting part is this … he shows up in East Texas on February 12th and starts there full-time. So whatever they got out of putting Waldo over one of their top guys was all for naught as Waldo ends up leaving as well.
