The McGuirk/Watts Wrestling Almanac - Chapter 15 (Q2 1963)

Welcome to Chapter 15 of The McGuirk/Watts Wrestling Almanac, an in-depth data-driven look at the wrestling territory run by Leroy McGuirk (and later, Bill Watts). The territory is most commonly known as Tri-State Wrestling and/or Mid-South Wrestling, though neither of those names were actually used until September 1979 when Watts split from McGuirk.

Each chapter covers a three-month period of time and will list our exclusive statistics:

1) SPOT (Statistical Position Over Time) Ratings, which measure a wrestlers average position on the cards
2) FEUD (Frequent Encounters Using Data) Scores, which measure the frequency and breadth of a series of matches between the same wrestlers (or teams)
In addition, we list the advertised lineups for all known house shows in the territory during the time period, an index of newcomers and other wrestlers (special attractions, women, midgets, etc) that passed through the territory, and a match-by-match, town-by-town recap of at least one feud during the quarter.

THE McGUIRK/WATTS WRESTLING ALMANAC
CHAPTER 15 (Q2 1963)

NEW TO THE TERRITORY THIS QUARTER
(wrestlers either making their first-ever appearance as a regular in this territory, their first appearance since Sep 1959, or appearing in a significantly different role/gimmick than when they were here previously)

DALE LEWIS – Lewis, a former college roommate of Bill Watts, turned pro in 1961 after competing in the Olympics in 1956 and 1960. Watt’s first match as a pro was against Lewis in Portsmouth, Ohio. Dale played football in high school and didn’t take up wrestling until after he enlisted in the U.S. Marines. After just six months, he made the 1956 U.S. Olympic team in Greco-Roman wrestling as a heavyweight.

EDUARDO CASTILLO – Born in the Andalucia region of Spain, Castillo spent several years wrestling in Germany in the 1950s. He also wrestled for Capitol Wrestling before spending a few years in the south and southeast U.S. He came here in May after spending about six monhs wrestling in Mid-Atlantic. While the history of wrestling in Spain is not well documented, it is believed that Castillo spent a good portion of his wrestling career there.

FELIX LAMBAN – Like Castillo, Lamban is also believed to have wrestled in Spain for a significant period of time, where he was also billed as Lamban I. In the U.S. he was sometimes billed as Felix Godo and teamed with Marcus Godo (Emilio Lamban aka Lamban II). Lamban started 1963 in Mid-Atlantic and went to Gulf Coast in mid-February for a few months before coming here.

GORILLA MACIAS III – There were three wrestlers who used the ring name Gorilla Macias, all of whom were brothers. Even though they were brothers, they used Roman numerals to distinguish themselves from one another. Gorilla Macias III, the youngest of the three, was born Jacobo Macias. The three brothers spent much of their careers in Mexico, but it is believed all of them had short stints in southern or western U.S. territories. Macias had been in East Texas before coming here at the end of April.

JACK VANSKY – Holder of one of the great nicknames in wrestling history, Jack “The Neck” Vansky was reported to have 20-inch neck (as a point of reference, the average neck circumference for an adult male is 15 inches). Vansky was born in New Jersey but was often billed from Ohio during a career that began in the early 1940s. He had been here before, a brief stint in the spring of 1944.

NIKITA MULKOVICH – Mulkovich had been here previously using the ring name Sascha the Great. He was the opponent for Danny Hodge in Hodge’s first pro match on October 2, 1959 in Oklahoma City. He used the Mulkovich ring name in other territories dating back to 1957. It is unknown if they acknowledged that Sascha and Mulkovich were the same person here.

PAT BARRETT – “Irish” Pat Barrett turned pro in 1959, wrestling in Europe for a few years before coming to the U.S. in 1962. After spending a little over four months wrestling for the WWWF, Barrett came here in late June. He stayed for a couple of months, then left the territory and wouldn’t return until 1976. His return saw him take part in a tournament to fill the vacant NWA World Junior Heavyweight title after Danny Hodge retired. In a minor surprise, Barrett won the tournament and held the title for a little over two months.

PAUL JONES – This is not believed to be the Paul Jones of Mid-Atlantic/Florida fame, but instead Sid Jones, the son of Marvin Jones (though I must confess I’m not 100% certain of that). Sid wrestled for about a decade, as Sid Jones in East Texas and Mid-Atlantic and as Paul Jones elsewhere. The “other” Paul Jones came here in 1967 for about 5 months.

TERRY GARVIN – Montreal-born Terrance Joyal turned pro in the late 50s. He had numerous stints in the McGuirk territory over the years, and worked in the office for McGuirk for some of the period between 1979 and 1982 after McGuirk and Watts had split. When Garvin wrestled here in the early 70s, he was managed by his “younger brother” Jim Garvin. Terry’s earliest matches teaming with another “brother” Ronnie, were in 1965 in Canada.

TITO CARREON – Tito’s career, which lasted about a dozen years, started in a rather unusual way. According to an article from SLAM! Wrestling, he had opened up a gym in his hometown of Gardena, CA. One day, a wrestler (whose name may have been lost to history) came to the gym for a workout and something Tito said or did caught the man’s eye. As the story goes, this wrestler then called up a local promoter and said he should use Tito, and the promoter called him up and told him to give it a try.

TOM BRADLEY – The man known as “Branding Iron” Tom Bradley had been wrestling since 1945. He came here from Mid-Atlantic in April 1963 for the first time. While he continued to wrestle for numerous territories over the next several years, he returned here frequently. As his career wound down, he worked some as a referee here while wrestling on a part-time basis until finally retiring in the early 70s.

OTHER WRESTLERS NOT LISTED IN THE SPOT RATINGS

NATIONALLY KNOWN STARS

Cowboy Bob Ellis, Dick the Bruiser and Lou Thesz

Ellis and Bruiser wrestled one another in New Orleans on June 26th on the first show promoted by Lambert Brown. Brown had been issued a promoters’ license earlier in the month and hired Joe Gunther as his matchmaker. Gunther had been the promoter in New Orleans for a previous attempt to run shows in the city using McGuirk talent. While Ellis and Bruiser were brought in from outside the area, the rest of the card featuring talent booked from the McGuirk office.

Thesz came in for four NWA World Heavyweight title defenses. He beat Great Bolo on May 29th in Springfield and May 30th in Wichita Falls. On May 31st in Oklahoma City, he retained the title against Danny Hodge. One would presume Lou won the match, but the newspaper only stated that he “retained the title”. Attendance for the show was listed as a capacity crowd of over 5,000. The next night in Joplin, Thesz beat Hodge in a match that couldn’t end on a disqualification (which was how their previous bout in Joplin ended).

PART-TIMERS

Jim Wehba, Karol Krauser, Ken Hill, Mighty Bolo, Tommy Peterson and Willie Conley

Back in March, the Wichita Falls newspaper reported that a local man by the name of Jim Wehba had challenged a couple of the heel wrestlers to a match and was told to “obtain a Texas wrestling license”. One week he was attacked by Great Bolo, who hit him with a chair. On April 4th, he came out as Joe McCarthy’s second for McCarthy’s bout with Bolo and caused Bolo to lose. On April 11th, Bolo faced McCarthy & Wehba, who the newspaper said was “known for his feats of physical strength throughout the area”, in a handicap match. Bolo would face each man individually, and needed to beat both of them to win, whereas if either one of them beat him Bolo would lose the match. Wehba's name shows up briefly in a couple of smaller territories prior to this, but this was his first match in the McGuirk territory. In late 1966, Wehba changed his ring name to Scandor Akbar, and the rest (as they say) is history.

Several different people, generally preliminary wrestlers or mid-carders, used the Mighty Bolo gimmick here over the years (sometimes the character was billed as Bolo Jr). Looking at the rest of the crew and part-timers, Oni Wiki Wiki or Tommy Peterson are possibilities, though it could have been someone who wasn’t wrestling here under a different name at the time. There is a small chance that Mike Ryckoff, a long-time friend of Wehba’s, worked under the mask here. Mighty Bolo shows up right around the time Wehba is getting started, and Ryckoff is believed to have worked as a masked Bolo at times.

Wille Conley, better known as Billy Garrett, teamed up briefly with Chuck Conley as The Scufflin’ Hillbillies here. Originally, the Hillbillies were billed as Conley & Rip Collins when they returned here at the end of the first quarter, but it appears that Rip didn’t make this trip and Willie replaced him.

WOMEN WRESTLERS

Jessica Rogers, Judy Glover, Margie Ramsey and Peggy Allen (their overall SPOT Rating was a .61 this quarter)

MALE MIDGET WRESTLERS

Chico Santana and Tiny Bell (their overall SPOT Rating was a .42 this quarter)

Here are the FEUD Scores for the quarter.

ANATOMY OF A FEUD

Here’s a look at the feud between Ed Sharpe and the Great Bolo, looking at all of the known matches between them with results and stipulations noted where available. The matches are arranged chronologically by city, so you can easily see which cities had multiple matches between them. Keep in mind that some newspapers didn't list details, so just because a match isn't specified as a title match, we don't necessarily know for a fact that it was non-title and the same can apply for stipulation bouts.

In most of the towns, the feud built to a stipulation where Bolo (Al Lovelock) was “forced” to wrestle without his mask, usually due to Bolo slipping a foreign object under his mask and using it as a weapon. Bolo’s identity was not much of a secret, as he had been unmasked in the territory previously.

TULSA
3/25/63 Ed Sharpe beat Great Bolo by disqualification
4/15/63 Great Bolo beat Ed Sharpe by countout “when the Englishman [Sharpe] was knocked out of the ring after butting heads with the masked roughian”, with Bolo also knocked out but inside the ring
4/22/63 Great Bolo beat Ed Sharpe, though he was apparently unmasked during the bout
4/29/63 Ed Sharpe beat Great Bolo in a match where Bolo was not allowed to wear his mask

FORT SMITH
4/3/63 Ed Sharpe wrestled Great Bolo to a no-contest
4/10/63 Ed Sharpe wrestled Great Bolo to a double countout; Bolo had posted a $300 bond which he would forfeit if it was found he used a weapon hidden in his mask
4/17/63 Ed Sharpe beat Great Bolo in a Texas rules match where the ring was surrounded by chicken wire

WICHITA FALLS
4/25/63 Ed Sharpe beat Great Bolo by disqualification in a lumberjack match; the previous week, Sharpe wrestled under a mask as Mr X and teamed with Bolo & Jack Donovan until turning against them and causing the team to lose
5/2/63 Ed Sharpe vs Great Bolo in a match where Bolo was not allowed to wear his mask
