The McGuirk/Watts Wrestling Almanac - Chapter 19 (Q2 1964)

Welcome to Chapter 19 of The McGuirk/Watts Wrestling Almanac, an in-depth data-driven look at the wrestling territory run by Leroy McGuirk (and later, Bill Watts). The territory is most commonly known as Tri-State Wrestling and/or Mid-South Wrestling, though neither of those names were actually used until September 1979 when Watts split from McGuirk.

Each chapter covers a three-month period of time and will list our exclusive statistics:

1) SPOT (Statistical Position Over Time) Ratings, which measure a wrestlers average position on the cards
2) FEUD (Frequent Encounters Using Data) Scores, which measure the frequency and breadth of a series of matches between the same wrestlers (or teams)
In addition, we list the advertised lineups for all known house shows in the territory during the time period, an index of newcomers and other wrestlers (special attractions, women, midgets, etc) that passed through the territory, and a match-by-match, town-by-town recap of at least one feud during the quarter.

CHAPTER 19 (Q2 1964)


NEW TO THE TERRITORY THIS QUARTER
(wrestlers either making their first-ever appearance as a regular in this territory, their first appearance since Sep 1959, or appearing in a significantly different role/gimmick than when they were here previously)

ART NEILSEN – Depending on where he was wrestling, his last name was spelled either Neilsen, Neilson or Nelson. He had two brief runs here in the 50s, but this was his first time in the territory since June of 1958. He had several tag team title reigns as the partner of Reggie “Da Crusher” Lisowski. Years later Art teamed with “brother” Stan Neilson, who had previously worked as Stan Lisowski, “brother” of Reggie.

BOBBY GRAHAM – Larry Hulin, better known in wrestling circles as Bobby (or Hercules) Graham, wrestled in numerous territories in the 1960s. He held tag team titles in a few different territories with partners Dale Lewis, Sonny Myers, Art Nelson, and John Tolos. He wrestled in Australia as Bob “the Bruiser” Baker, a cigar-chomping heel from Chicago. In October of 1967, Hulin was arrested in Asheboro, NC and charged with “assault on a female” by his wife. While in jail, he was reported as “ripping out the commode”, noticed when water began dripping into the offices below the jail.

LOU HOLT – Billed as 6’4” and 235 pounds and hailing from Pittsburgh (some clippings bill him as from Philadelphia, but most of them say Pittsburgh), this wrestler showed up here for a few weeks and then disappeared. I can’t find any records of a “Lou Holt” wrestling anywhere else, so for now this remains a wrestling history mystery.

MARK STARR – Generally listed as the brother of famed ballet dancer/pro wrestler Ricki Starr, Mark wrestled under the names Joe Kono, Mark Starr, and the Mongolian (or the Mongol) over the course of a twenty-year career. While this was his first stint here, he would return numerous times over the years.

MIKE GALLAGHER – One half of the famed brother tag team with older brother “Doc” Gallagher. Mike, sometimes billed as “Liberace” Mike Gallagher, was 13 years younger than Doc, and the two often used this age difference as part of their act, with Doc playing the seasoned vet and Mike the brash young upstart. They were also said to have incorporated comedic spots into their heel personas, a tactic later used by Killer Karl Kox and Dick Murdoch. The two had been wrestling for Doyle/Barnett’s AWA but went their separate ways in June, with Mike coming here and Doc going to Mid-Atlantic.

ANATOMY OF A FEUD

Here’s a look at the feud between Mike Clancy and Terry Garvin, looking at all of the known matches between them with stipulations noted where available. The matches are arranged chronologically by city, so you can easily see which cities had multiple matches between them.

Keep in mind that some newspapers didn't list details, so just because a match isn't specified as a title match, we don't necessarily know for a fact that it was non-title and the same can apply for stipulation bouts.

It appears that this feud began with a “torrid tilt” in a TV match that saw them fighting inside and outside the ring before the time limit expired. Clancy had been billed as the local promoter in Springfield and had not wrestled in that town for quite some time. Prior to their first match there it was announced that he “sold his promotional interests” in the town to McGuirk.

5/13/64 Garvin beat Clancy; during the third fall, “the referee caught an elbow and was flattened. When Clancy bent over to help him, Garvin caught him in the back of the neck with knees and went on to win…”
5/20/64 Clancy beat Garvin in two straight falls in a match with the ring enclosed by a steel fence (like the second Little Rock match, this was done because Garvin was repeatedly “scampering nimbly for the sanctuary of the ropes” during the match on 5/13)

A heretofore seemingly forgotten story in the early life of Sylvester Ritter (The Junkyard Dog) may offer some insight into the personality of the man who later transcended race to become the first Black wrestler indisputably pushed as the top babyface of a major pro wrestling territory in the South. The story has nothing to do with wrestling, though if you view professional wrestling in the territorial era as a sort of morality play based on real-life struggles & issues and you look at the role Junkyard Dog played as an extension of that, then it has everything to do with it.
