The McGuirk/Watts Wrestling Almanac - Chapter 20 (Q3 1964)
Welcome to Chapter 20 of The McGuirk/Watts Wrestling Almanac, an in-depth data-driven look at the wrestling territory run by Leroy McGuirk (and later, Bill Watts). The territory is most commonly known as Tri-State Wrestling and/or Mid-South Wrestling, though neither of those names were actually used until September 1979 when Watts split from McGuirk.
Each chapter covers a three-month period of time and will list our exclusive statistics:1) SPOT (Statistical Position Over Time) Ratings, which measure a wrestlers average position on the cards
2) FEUD (Frequent Encounters Using Data) Scores, which measure the frequency and breadth of a series of matches between the same wrestlers (or teams)
In addition, we list the advertised lineups for all known house shows in the territory during the time period, an index of newcomers and other wrestlers (special attractions, women, midgets, etc) that passed through the territory, and a match-by-match, town-by-town recap of at least one feud during the quarter.

CHAPTER 20 (Q3 1964)
NEW TO THE TERRITORY THIS QUARTER
(wrestlers either making their first-ever appearance as a regular in this territory, their first appearance since Sep 1959, or appearing in a significantly different role/gimmick than when they were here previously)
ALEX MEDINA – Medina wrestled between 1959 and 1973 in the U.S. and Canada. He seems to generally have been used in the mid-cards or lower in many of the paces he wrestled. He had been in Mid-Atlantic before coming here in August. When he left here, he went to Arizona and got a nice push there. He feuded with Don Arnold and Don Kent and had a run with the Arizona Heavyweight title, which may have been the only title reign of his career.
BUDDY ALLEN – Born Jack Altinger, he spent most of his career wrestling as Jack Allen for Al Haft, Fred Kohler, the AWA, and numerous other territories. He came here in August after a stint in Mid-Atlantic. This seems to be the only time he used the name Buddy Allen. His career lasted 16 years, from 1950 to 1966.
CHUCK KARBO – Sporting “spiked sideburns and devilish goatee” (per Bob Miller from kayfabememories.com), Karbo was a menacing heel for much of his career. He turned pro in 1962, originally using the name Chuck Campbell. He first took the Karbo surname in Amarillo in April 1964. While a main eventer for McGuirk later in the decade he often played on the Texas vs Oklahoma rivalry. Bob Miller also wrote that, in one promo, Karbo claimed that “he would lie in wait at the Texas border, and any car passing by with Arkansas or Oklahoma license plates would be shot at.” Karbo was the first North American champion in the McGuirk territory, which was created by way of a fictitious tournament in Phoenix with “over 100 other wrestlers.”
GINO BRANDO – Not gonna lie, I have no idea who this is. The two people I thought it could have been are Gino Brito and Rocky Smith. In the case of Brito, he seems to be wrestling (as Gino Brito) in Michigan at the time Brando is wrestling here. Rocky Smith, according to cagematch.net, is listed as using the name “Gino Brando” earlier in 1964 in Mid-Atlantic and from September ‘64 to March ’65 in Gulf Coast. However, at the same time “Gino Brando” is wrestling in Mid-Atlantic, Rocky Smith is wrestling (as Rocky Smith) for Gulas. And Rocky is still working for Gulas when “Brando” is here. So it can’t be him.
KARL GOTCH – Born in either Antwerp, Belgium or Hamburg, Germany (depending on the source), Charles Isatz competed for Belgium in the 1948 Olympics in both freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling. He trained for professional wrestling at the “Snake Pit” in Wigan, Lancashire, England and took the name Karl Gotch when he came to the U.S. in 1961. He came here from the AWA (Doyle/Barnett) in August and seems to have been given a nice push. Gotch left the territory abruptly in early October. A note in the Springfield newspaper said he “withdrew because of the illness of his wife.” His next known booking is October 12th in Vancouver, and he works there full-time afterwards.
LON STUART – Born in the mid-size-market paper capital of the world (Scranton, Pennsylvania), Frank Stewart began his wrestling career as Lonnie Brown in Georgia in 1963. He also used that name when wrestling for Gulas in early 1964 before coming here and changing it to Lon Stuart. He stayed through March of 1965 and changed his name once more, this time to Dutch Savage. That name stuck for the next 16 years (except for several months in Hawaii as Dutch Schultz). He became a mainstay in the Pacific Northwest, holding their tag team titles at least 12 times and their heavyweight title 7 times.
RETURNING TO THE TERRITORY THIS QUARTER
Danny Hodge, Hiro Matsuda, Jack Donovan, Nelson Royal, and Tom Bradley
When Hodge had left back in May to go to Florida, he was the NWA World Junior Heavyweight champion. On July 11th in Tampa, he lost that title to Hiro Matsuda. After a one-off appearance in August, Matsuda came here full-time at the beginning of September. A few weeks later, Hodge returned here and they began a storyline where he was trying to get a rematch with Matsuda.

NATIONALLY KNOWN STARS
Bill Miller, Pat O’Connor, and Bill Watts
Miller and O’Connor came in for a fundraiser for the U.S. Olympic Finance Committee on August 24th in Tulsa. Proceeds from the event, which drew 3500 fans, were used to help defray the cost of sending U.S. Olympic athletes to Japan for the ’64 Games.

CHAMPIONS & KNOWN TITLE CHANGES
NOTE: Title histories are sometimes not “linear”; title changes can be acknowledged in one market but not others, or perhaps acknowledged in others at a later date. Also, the concept of titles being “held up” can sometimes refer to a town-specific angle to build to a rematch and may not be acknowledged in other markets. This represents my best effort to accurately portray title histories using the tools now available. NWA WORLD JUNIOR HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE
As mentioned above, Hiro Matsuda beat Danny Hodge to win the title on July 11th in Tampa. Matsuda came here full-time at the beginning of September.
MISSOURI JUNIOR HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE
Karol Krauser was the holder of this title, successfully defending it on July 1st in Springfield, MO against Bobby Graham. At some point over the next few days, Krauser is sidelined with an injury. He missed his bookings the following Monday and Tuesday in Louisiana and likely missed the rest of his advertised bookings after those. A blurb in the August 2nd Springfield Leader and Press says that Krauser was “recovering from knee surgery at Hillcrest Hospital in Tulsa.” Karol evidently returned to the ring shortly thereafter in Utah. He passed away on September 10th in Salt Lake City, reportedly suffering a heart attack in the dressing room after his match. Krauser, real name Karol Piwoworczyk, was 52 years old.
SOUTHWEST TAG TEAM TITLES
Jerry Kozak & Bobby Graham won the titles from Stan Pulaski & Karol Krauser in Oklahoma City in June. Mike Gallagher & Nelson Royal beat Kozak & Graham to win the titles on August 6th in Wichita Falls.

ANATOMY OF A FEUD
Here’s a look at the feud between Al Lovelock and Mike Gallagher, looking at all the known matches between them with stipulations noted where available. The matches are arranged chronologically by city, so you can easily see which cities had multiple matches between them.
Keep in mind that some newspapers didn't list details, so just because a match isn't specified as a title match, we don't necessarily know for a fact that it was non-title and the same can apply for stipulation bouts.
This feud was generally based on Gallagher using “illegal” karate chops to Lovelock’s throat leading to rematches with various stipulations in different markets. In some towns, Lovelock was back wearing his Great Bolo mask while in others he continued to wrestle unmasked. In at least one case, the mask played into a finish and cost Lovelock the match, so the following week he wrestled without it.
FORT SMITH
7/1/64 Gallagher beat Lovelock after a “desperation finger jab to [Lovelock’s] throat … followed with a body press”; earlier in the third fall, Lovelock had Gallagher pinned but “intentionally lifted him from the canvas to administer just a bit more punishment”
