The McGuirk/Watts Wrestling Almanac - Chapter 22 (Q1 1965)

Welcome to Chapter 22 of The McGuirk/Watts Wrestling Almanac, an in-depth data-driven look at the wrestling territory run by Leroy McGuirk (and later, Bill Watts). The territory is most commonly known as Tri-State Wrestling and/or Mid-South Wrestling, though neither of those names were actually used until September 1979 when Watts split from McGuirk.

Each chapter covers a three-month period of time and will list our exclusive statistics:

1) SPOT (Statistical Position Over Time) Ratings, which measure a wrestlers average position on the cards
2) Frequent Partners & Frequent Opponents, which let you see who a wrestler was teaming up with on a regular basis (if any) and who they were regularly wrestling against in meaningful matches high up on the cards
In addition, we list the advertised lineups for all known house shows in the territory during the time period, an index of newcomers and other wrestlers (special attractions, women, midgets, etc) that passed through the territory, and a match-by-match, town-by-town recap of at least one feud during the quarter.

NEW TO THE TERRITORY THIS QUARTER
(wrestlers either making their first-ever appearance as a regular in this territory, their first appearance since Sep 1959, or appearing in a significantly different role/gimmick than when they were here previously)

KURT STEIGER – Arnold Patrick began his career in the late 50s under his real name before switching it to Al Torres. He changed it again to Kurt Steiger when he came here in February. He added the “Von” at some point later in the year, though was still billed as “Kurt Steiger” in some places. He first hooked up with Karl Von Steiger (Lorne Corlett) in March 1967 in Calgary; the two teamed up regularly for most of the next 5 years, and again later in the 70s. However, before either man was a “Von Steiger”, they did team up at least once earlier in their careers. A listing for a match in Winnipeg in April 1960 has Al Torres & Lorne Corlett teaming up to face Guy Vinci & Ed Moffat.

TED NAIFEH – Naifeh primarily worked as a referee in the first half of the 60s, but also wrestled on occasion. In 1965 he began wrestling more frequently, spending several months here and then going to Arizona over the summer. He also worked as a Deputy Sheriff in Tulsa in the early part of the decade. In March 1966, Ted, also known as “Tiger” Naifeh, passed away due to an apparent heart attack at the age of 36. 

TIM TYLER – After wrestling and refereeing sporadically for a few years as Randy Roper, Tim (real name Calvin Hickman) went to Florida in October 1964 to team up with Tarzan Tyler as his “brother”. A few years later, Tim would team up with Rip Tyler (William Dean Vaughan) as another Tyler “brother” team. When Rip (and later Randy Tyler) wrestled for McGuirk in the 70s, they were initially presented as relatives of Tarzan. As for Tim, he bounced around the southern territories through 1970.

NWA WORLD JUNIOR HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE
Angelo Savoldi held this title for the duration of the quarter.

MISSOURI JUNIOR HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE
Hodge had won this title the previous November, but it doesn’t appear to be acknowledged this quarter.

ANATOMY OF A FEUD

Here’s a look at the feud between Danny Hodge and Treach Phillips, looking at all the known matches between them with stipulations noted where available. The matches are arranged chronologically by city, so you can easily see which cities had multiple matches between them.

Keep in mind that some newspapers didn't list details, so just because a match isn't specified as a title match, we don't necessarily know for a fact that it was non-title and the same can apply for stipulation bouts.

In some towns, the first singles match between the two was set up by a tag match the previous week. In others, it was reported that Phillips talked his way into a match with Hodge, with the Springfield newspaper saying that Phillips called him “a skinny, pencil-necked bean pole and a pampered home town darling” to goad him into a match. In many towns, they built to a “mountaineer style” match, which is another term for a lumberjack match.

FORT SMITH
2/24 No referee (the two were on opposite sides of a tag bout the previous week, which was the setup for this match): Treach Phillips beat Danny Hodge by countout
3/3 Ring surrounded by chicken wire, 3 out of 5 falls: Hodge beat Phillips by reverse decision. Hodge was originally disqualified when the referee, who had been knocked down, thought Hodge had thrown Phillips over the top rope (the chicken wire was strewn around the ropes, as opposed to a ‘steel cage’ with a top), but the fans “forced the referee to reverse his decision”, as Phillips had actually pulled himself over the rope

A heretofore seemingly forgotten story in the early life of Sylvester Ritter (The Junkyard Dog) may offer some insight into the personality of the man who later transcended race to become the first Black wrestler indisputably pushed as the top babyface of a major pro wrestling territory in the South. The story has nothing to do with wrestling, though if you view professional wrestling in the territorial era as a sort of morality play based on real-life struggles & issues and you look at the role Junkyard Dog played as an extension of that, then it has everything to do with it.
