McGuirk Wrestling Territory: Q2 1978

In the 2nd quarter of 1978, the Assassin ruffles the feathers of Steven Little Bear, Orndorff becomes a “champ champ”, Louisiana gets a new title, and more!

Here is the roster for the quarter. Wrestlers are listed in descending order by their average SPOT Rating during the quarter:

NEW TO THE TERRITORY THIS QUARTER
(wrestlers either making their first-ever appearance as a regular in this territory, their first appearance since Sep 1959, or appearing in a significantly different role/gimmick than when they were here previously)

DON KODIAK – Not much is known about this wrestler. It’s always possible it was a wrestler better known by a different name who briefly used this one, but there is no info to suggest that. Kodiak’s name first pops up in Central States in April 1978, and he starts here in early May. In late July he goes to East Texas but is back here for a couple of appearances in September. And that seems to be it for him, whoever he may have been.

GARY YOUNG – Gary started his career in 1977 after being trained by Joe Mercer (who wrestled as Joe Pizza and Karl Von Helm). Mercer promoted some small shows and used Gary as well another man he trained, Lynn Denton (the future Grappler). After first using the ring name Gary Starr, he changed it to Gary Young in September 1977. He spent the next 15 or so years wrestling in various territories, often in the state of Texas. He may best be known to fans today for having teamed with Cactus Jack in Memphis and Dallas in the late 1980s. More recently, he’s been manager of a Chili’s in North Little Rock, AR.

THE MONGOL – This version of the Mongol (one of many different mongols who wrestled for McGuirk over the years) is believed to have been Phil Mercado. I can’t confirm this, and it seems somewhat curious considering that Phil had been here for a couple of months wrestling as Phil Mercado not long before this stint. So if it was Mercado, that meant he was wrestling here as ‘himself’ from November 1977 to January 1978, then left and came back just five months later pretending to be a Mongol. Mercado began his in-ring career in late 1976 and West Texas and worked for various territories, mostly in the southeast, through 1982.

RANDY BREWER – Perhaps best known for his stint wrestling for Nick Gulas as Rocky Brewer, Randy wrestled in various territories from the mid 70s through the early 80s. He held the Mid-America Tag Team titles for Gulas a few times in 1980, teaming with Nick’s son George and with Pat Rose. From 1983 to 1989, he can be found wrestling for small promotions in Iowa as “Super Star” Rocky Brewer.

RETURNING TO THE TERRITORY THIS QUARTER

Bruiser Brody, Denny Alberts, Jose Lothario, and Killer Brooks

OTHER WRESTLERS NOT LISTED IN THE SPOT RATINGS

NATIONALLY KNOWN STARS
Abdullah the Butcher, Andre the Giant, Dusty Rhodes, Harley Race, Killer Karl Kox, Nelson Royal, Rocky Johnson, the Spoiler, and Stan Hansen

PART-TIMERS OR JUST PASSING THROUGH
Afa Anoia & Sika Anoia, Bob Sweetan, Bruce Miller, Buck Robley, David Von Erich, Jack Curtis Jr., Leroy Brown, the Medic (identity unknown), Ray Rougeau, Rene Goulet, Rock Hunter, and Tom Chitwood

WOMEN WRESTLERS
Joyce Grable, Leilani Kai, Pepper LaBianco, and Vicki Williams
Their average SPOT Rating here was a .77

MANAGERS
Scandor Akbar finished up his run in the territory in April. While it doesn’t appear he managed anyone after Doctor X had left in March, he seems to be an “associate” of some of the other heels while wrestling part-time. Akbar next went to Central States briefly and then to Mid-Atlantic.

CHAMPIONS & KNOWN TITLE CHANGES

NOTE: Title histories are sometimes not “linear”; title changes can be acknowledged in one market but not others, or perhaps acknowledged in others at a later date. Also, the concept of titles being “held up” can sometimes refer to a town-specific angle to build to a rematch and may not be acknowledged in other markets. This represents my best effort to accurately portray title histories using the tools now available. While I do try to put these histories together on my own, I often refer to wrestling-titles.com

NORTH AMERICAN TITLE
Ernie Ladd was the champion at the beginning of the quarter. Paul Orndorff won the title from Ladd, most likely on May 29th in Tulsa. Some sources list Ladd regaining the title and then dropping it back to Paul in June, but I can’t verify this. I suspect that it’s incorrect and merely a function of ads still listing Ladd as champion in some towns after the title switch occurred but before it was acknowledged in that market.

U.S. TAG TEAM TITLES
Ray Candy & Steven Little Bear were the champions at the beginning of the quarter. Ernie Ladd & the Assassin won the titles on April 5th in Baton Rouge and dropped them back to Candy & Little Bear on April 23rd, also in Baton Rouge. Jerry Brown & Bobby Jaggers beat Candy & Little Bear to win the titles, most likely on May 5th in Oklahoma City.

LOUISIANA HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE
After being dormant for several years, the Louisiana title was re-introduced in April, with the Assassin winning a one-night, twelve-man tournament on April 26th in Baton Rouge to become the champion. Brackets and results from the tourney are not available. It’s worth noting that Ray Candy was advertised for the tournament but didn’t compete; reading the programs it plays out like an angle, where they imply that Assassin had somehow caused Candy to miss the tourney.

LOUISIANA TAG TEAM TITLES
Ray Candy & Steven Little Bear were the champions at the beginning of the quarter and held on to them for the entire time period.

BRASS KNUCKS TITLE
The title hadn’t been acknowledged for about a year, but Stan Hansen was billed as champion and dropped it to Thunderbolt Patterson on April 1st in New Orleans. Hansen was said to have regained the title in Savannah at some point between the 1st and the 25th, but this was likely a phantom title change. While both men were wrestling in Georgia at that time, Savannah was a Mid-Atlantic town dating back to the fall of 1976. Hansen then dropped it to Paul Orndorff in Shreveport on April 25th.

Here are the top feuds in the territory for the quarter:

ANATOMY OF A FEUD

Here’s a look at the feud between the Assassin and Steven Little Bear, looking at all the known matches between them with stipulations noted where available. The matches are arranged chronologically by city, so you can easily see which cities had multiple matches between them.

Where results are available, they are listed. In some cases, details on the finish or any angles that occurred are given as well.

Keep in mind that some newspapers didn't list details, so just because a match isn't specified as a title match, we don't necessarily know for a fact that it was non-title and the same can apply for stipulation bouts.

Not much in the way of details regarding this feud and how it began, but at one point Little Bear unmasked Assassin on TV. The Assassin was able to cover his face so the cameras couldn’t see. Little Bear kept the mask (presumably with Assassin getting a new one to wear) and would put it on the ringpost when he wrestled, daring Assassin to come get it. Later in the year, the Assassin & the Angel (Frank Morrell, who came here in the fall) attacked Little Bear, tore up his headdress, and stuffed the feathers in his mouth. The results below show that in many towns they built to Indian strap matches (Little Bear’s “specialty” match), taped fist matches (billed as Assassin’s “specialty” match), and some matches where a coin toss would determine which wrestler got to pick their specialty stipulation.

4/18 If match goes to a third fall, winner of a coin toss will decide the rules of the fall: Little Bear won the third fall and unmasked the Assassin afterwards (presumably with Assassin covering his face and leaving the ring)
