The McGuirk/Watts Wrestling Almanac - Chapter 28 (1966 Q3)
Welcome to Chapter 28 of The McGuirk/Watts Wrestling Almanac, an in-depth data-driven look at the wrestling territory run by Leroy McGuirk (and later, Bill Watts).
Each chapter covers a three-month period of time and will list our exclusive statistics:
1) Rankings. A look at the top acts in the territory during the quarter based on their average position on the cards and how many weeks they were here
2) SPOT (Statistical Position Over Time) Ratings, which measure a wrestlers average position on the cards
3) The top feuds based on FLW (Feud Length in Weeks) Score, which takes into account how many times a specific matchup occurs and where on the card those matches take place, scaled to represent an approximate length of time that the feud lasted in the territory
In addition, we list the advertised lineups for all known house shows in the territory during the time period, an index of newcomers and other wrestlers (special attractions, women, little persons, etc) that passed through the territory, and a match-by-match, town-by-town recap of at least one feud during the quarter.

NEW TO THE TERRITORY THIS QUARTER
(wrestlers either making their first-ever appearance as a regular in this territory, their first appearance since Sep 1959, or appearing in a significantly different role/gimmick than when they were here previously)
BOB ORTON – The father of a cowboy and the grandfather of a legend killer, Bob Orton (Senior) had a distinguished wrestling career in his own right that stretched over three decades. The elder Orton was a high school football teammate and longtime friend of actor Ed Asner. He turned pro a couple of months before his 21st birthday, wrestling in Heart of America (Central States) for a few months before going to Florida in the fall. He would end up spending quite a bit of time in both those territories over the years, with other frequent stops being Georgia and Nebraska.
CHRIS TOLOS – Just 9 ½ months older than his brother John, Chris was born on December 5th, 1929 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Chris and John held tag team titles in at least 8 different territories over a 14-year period. The Tolos brothers were trained by William Davis, who wrestled as Wee Willie Davis. Chris debuted about a year before his brother and used the ring name Mad Man Metaxas for Manhattan Wrestling Enterprises.
COWBOY BOB ELLIS – Ellis was only here for a few weeks, his first time wrestling for LeRoy McGuirk. After this brief stint, he wouldn’t be back until 1978 when he was winding down his 20+ year career in the ring. Ellis is widely considered to have invented the bulldog headlock and may have been the first wrestler to reverse the figure-four leglock. Before getting into wrestling, Ellis was a paratrooper in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. While Ellis’s best-known feud is probably against Dick the Bruiser, he also had a big feud with Rip Hawk in the Carolinas and Virginia. That feud began when Ellis was presented with a birthday cake on television that had been bought for him by “kids at [the] local Crippled Children’s Home” who had “saved their pennies”. Hawk came out and said “I have birthdays too…and those stinking kids never did anything for me” and proceeded to sucker punch Ellis and smashed his face into the cake.
KENNY MACK – Lawrence Kenneth McMullen began his career in 1964 or 1965 wrestling as Kenny Mack in various territories, mostly in the southeast. He hooked up with Don Fargo and worked as both a manager and tag team partner for Don (then wrestling as Jack Dalton and sometimes teaming with Frank Dalton). Spending a lot of time on the road with Fargo led to him getting arrested in Baton Rouge in August 1968 for his alleged role in a biker gang initiation, and then getting shot a year later by a group of bikers outside a bar in Racine, Wisconsin. He survived the shooting but is believed to have never wrestled again.
ROCKY MONTERO – Rocky wrestled from the early 60s through the mid 70s in various territories, mostly on the west coast. In 1976 and 1976 he teamed up with Kurt Von Steiger as the Masked Invaders in northern California. He also teamed with Eduardo Perez in Gulf Coast in 1966. Montero was said to have used a modified version of the abdominal stretch where he held his opponent in a full nelson while applying the stretch.

NWA WORLD JUNIOR HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE
Danny Hodge held the title for the duration of the quarter.
U.S. TAG TEAM TITLES
Just a couple of weeks after winning the titles in May, the Assassins (Hamilton & Renesto) left the territory and went to Arizona. When they returned later in the year, they were still billed as champions.

ANATOMY OF A FEUD
Here’s a look at the feud between Danny Hodge and Jack Brisco, looking at all of the known matches between them with stipulations noted where available. The matches are arranged chronologically by city, so you can easily see which cities had multiple matches between them.
Keep in mind that some newspapers didn't list details, so just because a match isn't specified as a title match, we don't necessarily know for a fact that it was non-title and the same can apply for stipulation bouts.
While babyface vs. babyface main events were rare, a matchup between the reigning NWA World Junior Heavyweight champion and an exciting youngster just entering his second year as a pro was a natural fit. Prior to turning pro, Danny Hodge excelled at the University of Oklahoma. A decade later, Jack Brisco was a star at Oklahoma State. Hodge was a 3-time NCAA champion at 177 pounds, while Brisco was NCAA champion at 191 pounds his senior year (mere months before turning pro). The two colleges have a long and storied rivalry that encompasses virtually every sport. It’s been known as “The Bedlam Series” since at least the early 1950s, and while the focus is generally on men’s football and basketball, the wrestling rivalry between the two schools has always been fierce, if lopsided (the Oklahoma State wrestling program currently holds a 147-27-10 record against Oklahoma).
Hodge and Brisco wrestled against one another twice on TV. Hodge won the first bout, which aired live in Oklahoma City on Saturday night, July 2nd. A rematch the following week saw the two men go to a time-limit draw.
TULSA
7/18 Hodge “retained his … championship … with a default over Jack Brisco”. In the third fall, Brisco “went over the top rope knocking himself out. The match was defaulted when Brisco was unable to return to the ring.”
8/8 Hodge retained the title when the 60-minute time limit expired. Brisco “could win but one fall” during the match
8/15 Hodge won two out of three falls to win the bout and retain the title
SPRINGFIELD
7/20 Brisco won the first fall in 30 minutes; no additional falls were scored before the 60-minute time limit expired
7/27 Hodge won the first fall in 22 minutes, Brisco won the second fall in 19 minutes; no additional falls were scored before the 60-minute time limit expired (prior to the show it was noted that “LeRoy McGuirk requested the National Wrestling Alliance to give more time for the rematch, but the governing body of the sport wouldn’t budge from its one-hour limit on all championship tilts.”
OKLAHOMA CITY
7/22 The match went to a “no decision” when the 60-minute time limit expired
7/29 Hodge retained the title when Brisco was injured (“Both wrestlers went over the top rope and Brisco banged his head on the concrete floor.”)
8/19 Hodge defeated Brisco
SHREVEPORT
7/25 Brisco won the first fall; no additional falls were scored before the 60-minute time limit expired
8/1 Hodge retained the title when Brisco “could not answer the bell for the third fall”. Brisco won the first fall in 32 minutes; in the second fall he “threw a flying scissor to the head of the champion, but was too close to the ropes and fell out of the ring landing on his head knocking him out.”

7/26 Brisco won the first fall in 30 minutes; no additional falls were scored before the 60-minute time limit expired (reported attendance: “about 2,000”)
8/2 Hodge retained the title, winning “a default decision” over Brisco. In the second fall (Brisco had won the first), “both men fell from the ring. Hodge returned before the referee reached the 20-count but Brisco was unable to make it back in time
