The McGuirk/Watts Wrestling Almanac - Chapter 29 (1966 Q4)

Welcome to Chapter 29 of The McGuirk/Watts Wrestling Almanac, an in-depth data-driven look at the wrestling territory run by Leroy McGuirk (and later, Bill Watts).

Each chapter covers a three-month period of time and will list our exclusive statistics:
1) Rankings. A look at the top acts in the territory during the quarter based on their average position on the cards and how many weeks they were here
2) SPOT (Statistical Position Over Time) Ratings, which measure a wrestlers average position on the cards
3) The top feuds based on FLW (Feud Length in Weeks) Score, which takes into account how many times a specific matchup occurs and where on the card those matches take place, scaled to represent an approximate length of time that the feud lasted in the territory

In addition, we list the advertised lineups for all known house shows in the territory during the time period, an index of newcomers and other wrestlers (special attractions, women, little persons, etc) that passed through the territory, and a match-by-match, town-by-town recap of at least one feud during the quarter.

THE McGUIRK/WATTS WRESTLING ALMANAC
CHAPTER 29 (1966 Q4)

Here is the roster for the quarter:

NEW TO THE TERRITORY THIS QUARTER
(wrestlers either making their first-ever appearance as a regular in this territory, their first appearance since Sep 1959, or appearing in a significantly different role/gimmick than when they were here previously)

BRONCO KELLY – Bronco is believed to have also wrestled as Red Kelly for about a decade starting in 1955. Red Kelly wrestled for Fred Kohler and the AWA during that time, though he looks to have primarily been a part-time enhancement wrestler. Bronco Kelly spent a few years working in different territories in the south, from Florida to Amarillo with some stops in between.

GORGEOUS GEORGE JR. – Charles Richard Phelps was born in 1937 in Minnesota. He is of no relation to the famous Gorgeous George (George Wagner). He was trained by Iron Mike DiBiase  and debuted in the mid-1960s. He lost a hair match in Arizona as he was finishing up his run there in the early fall of 1966. He next went to Heart of America (Central States) for about a month. Now bald, he came up with a clever way to explain it: he was billed as “the fighting Marine” Dick Marshall. He then came here in November and reverted back to the Gorgeous George Jr. persona. While here, he reportedly legally changed his name to “George Wagner” to further embrace the gimmick. He spent the next 14 years working in various territories, mostly in the south, before retiring in 1980 and becoming a truck driver.

JOHNNY ZENDA – Born John Louis Zendejas in 1944, Zenda’s name shows up in a few different territories from 1964 to 1971. Many of his appearances were on the west coast and in Canada, though he also wrestled for the AWA as Juan Zendejas. He later went into acting, including being one of Michael Myers’ victims in Halloween II. According to his profile on IMDB (which was submitted by his son), Zenda was a descendant of Jesse James and later worked as Sean Penn’s personal bodyguard. He was also posthumously inducted to the NHRA (National Hot Rod Association) for his contributions to the sport (he had been a driver, a track manager, director of their “Historical Services” division, and curator of the Hot Rod Museum in Pomona, CA).

THE MEDICS – A version of the Medics had been here during the summer. They were unmasked and identified as Tony Gonzales and Dan Ellis before leaving in mid-September. At the end of November, another team billed as the Medics started appearing in the territory. In a few instances, it was stated that one of the members of this version had been a member of the team that was here over the summer, but that appears to be false. This version of the Medics also lost their masks towards the end of their run in January 1967 and were identified as Chuck Conley and John Higgins. Conley is probably best known for being one of the Scufflin’ Hillbillies team (which, like the Medics, had a few different incarnations) with Rip Collins. Higgins also used the ring names Johnny Carr and Blackjack Gordon over the course of his career.

NICK ADAMS – Adams debuted earlier in the year, starting in Gulf Coast and also wrestling in Florida and East Texas before coming here in the fall. In later years, he was the trainer for a couple of different wrestling bears. He also wrestled as Dr. Frank, a Frankenstein knockoff, in 1967 for Nick Gulas, teaming with the Mummy (Eddie Marlin). Some sources also link him to the “Dr. Frank” that wrestled a decade later, but I am fairly sure that was a friend of Jerry Lawler’s named Jim Blake (though it’s always possible more than one person was under the costume at various times).

PANCHO ROSARIO – After starting his career as Pancho Valdez, Rosario worked for Jack Pfefer as one of his “knockoffs”, being billed as Bruno Sanmartino. After that, he spent about 15 years traversing the territories using the names Pancho Valdez, Pancho Rosario, or Gypsy Joe Rosario. He is not to be confused with the other wrestlers who worked as “Gypsy Joe” at various times.

CHAMPIONS & KNOWN TITLE CHANGES

NWA WORLD JUNIOR HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE
Danny Hodge was the champion at the beginning of the quarter. On November 5th in Oklahoma City during the live TV broadcast, Hodge lost the title to Assassin #1. Until recently, virtually all title history sources state that this was Jody Hamilton, but I am fairly sure it was actually Tom Renesto. Hamilton & Renesto had been teaming up in Arizona over the summer, but Hamilton went to Heart of America for a couple of weeks in October while Renesto does not appear to be wrestling anywhere. On October 31st, Assassin #1 wrestled in Tulsa. Assassin #1 also wrestled on November 4th in Oklahoma City, and this had to have been Renesto, as Hamilton wrestled Gene Kiniski in St. Joseph, MO that same night. The next night, “Assassin #1” defeats Hodge for the title. So if Renesto *had* to have been Assassin #1 on 11/4, it would stand to reason that he was also Assassin #1 on 11/5. Hodge regained the title from Assassin #1 on 12/19 in Tulsa. And again the next night in Little Rock. And the night after that in Springfield. And the night after *that* in Wichita Falls. And just for the hell of it, I want to note that in at least two of those matches, Hodge won one of the falls by disqualification but still “won” the title.
NOTE: Shortly before publishing this blog post, I spoke with an editor for wrestlingdata.com and the person who runs wrestling-titles.com; after presenting my evidence and reasoning, we came to a consensus that it most likely was Renesto; wrestling-titles.com had already listed him as the champion and wrestlingdata.com has corrected their info to reflect this.

U.S. TAG TEAM TITLES
When the Assassins returned to the territory in November, they were billed as champs (they had won the titles here in the spring). On December 7th in Springfield, MO, they lost the titles to Jack Brisco & Eddie Sullivan. It should be noted that Brisco & Sullivan won the second fall by disqualification, but it was still noted as a title change. The teams were rematched the following week in Springfield, with a newspaper article saying the titles will “have an unchallenged claimant” afterwards. This seems to imply that the title change from the previous week was “disputed” by the Assassins in storyline, likely due to the disqualification. The Assassins won the rematch and “regained” the titles. This switch was almost certainly only acknowledged in Springfield. The Assassins were billed as champions on 12/8 in Wichita Falls and 12/13 in Little Rock.

Here are the top feuds in the territory for the quarter:

ANATOMY OF A FEUD

Here’s a look at the feud between Jerry Kozak and Chris Tolos, looking at all of the known matches between them with stipulations noted where available. The matches are arranged chronologically by city, so you can easily see which cities had multiple matches between them.

Keep in mind that some newspapers didn't list details, so just because a match isn't specified as a title match, we don't necessarily know for a fact that it was non-title and the same can apply for stipulation bouts.

In Tulsa and Little Rock, this feud began via a battle royal. In this era, the promotion usually had what are referred to as “Russian roulette” battle royals. In these, the battle royal occurs at the beginning of the card, and the singles matches that occur afterwards are determined by order of elimination. They typically had an odd number of participants, so the first wrestler eliminated was “done for the night” and wouldn’t have a singles match (thus “not getting paid”). The second wrestler eliminated would face the third wrestler eliminated, and so on and so forth until the final two men left in the battle royal competed in the main event for the battle royal “purse”. Many times, that main event would go to a non-finish, leading to a rematch the following week.
