In the 4th quarter of 1980, a feud straight out of a Jim Croce song, Jake Roberts and the Grappler battle over title belts, Ole Anderson tries to collect a bounty on the Cowboy & more!

NEW TO THE TERRITORY THIS QUARTER

BRETT WAYNE – Brett Eugene Woyan, the younger brother of “Mad Dog” Buzz Sawyer, debuted as a pro earlier in the year shortly before his 20th birthday. After making a handful of appearances in Mid-Atlantic (and maybe one or two in Georgia), he came here in late October. In addition to teaming with his brother for a notable run in Georgia, he also tagged regularly with Tom Prichard in Portland. In singles competition, he had three reigns as Pacific Northwest champ, one run as National champion (Georgia) and one in Central States.
COCOA SAMOA – Born in Pago Pago, Samoa wrestled under a few different names over the course of his career. Primarily known as Cocoa, he also used the name Tama (or Tami) Samoa in Portland and in Memphis he wrestled as Sabu the Wildman. Cocoa teamed with Jimmy Snuka in Portland in the mid-70s and held tag team titles in Hawaii (with Mando Guerrero and Ati Tago) and in Portland in the mid-80s (with Brady Boone and Ricky Santana).
JIM GARVIN – Garvin had been here before as the manager of his “brother” Terry Garvin, but his last appearances here in that role were back in early 1973. In 1979 as a babyface in Florida he was involved in a notable angle where his mentor (Killer Karl Kox) turned on him. He later worked for Leroy McGuirk’s Tri-State territory shortly after McGuirk and Watts split in the fall, then went back to Florida for a long stretch before coming here as a babyface.
LEROY BROWN – Taking his ring name from the Jim Croce song “Bad Bad Leroy Brown”, Roland Daniels debuted in 1977 in Memphis. Interestingly enough, one of hist first matches as a pro was a tag team match featuring Sylvester Ritter (the future Junkyard Dog) on the opposing team. After stints in East Texas, Southern California and Florida and a tour of New Japan, Brown came here as a partner/ally of Ernie Ladd to feud with JYD, which was only natural if you know the lyrics to the aforementioned Croce song. Too bad they didn’t bring in Angelo “King Kong” Mosca to take part in it as well!
MIKE MILLER – Before he was “Mean”, plain ol’ Mike Miller debuted as a pro in late 1979 for Jerry Jarrett. He then worked in Florida and for Nick Gulas before coming here. He is best known for his lengthy run in Portland in the 80s, which saw him win the Pacific Northwest Tag Team titles eight times with several different partners and hold the Pacific Northwest Heavyweight title three times.
OLE ANDERSON – While we probably shouldn’t consider him a “regular” here, Ole had over a dozen bookings over the course of several weeks towards the end of the year. He primarily faced Bill Watts in bounty matches. I’m assuming the bounty was placed by Ernie Ladd, as he also teams with Ladd & Leroy Brown on a few occasions to face Watts and other top babyfaces.
RON CHEATHAM – This appears to be Cheatham’s debut as a pro. He bounces around the southern territories for a few years in the early 80s mostly in a preliminary role.
SUPER DESTROYER – Scott Irwin started his career in 1976 under his real name. In early 1978, he went to the WWWF to team up with the former Zarinoff (Soldier) Lebeouf as the Lumberjacks (Scott was Lumberjack Eric, Zarinoff was Lumberjack Pierre). The team won the WWWF Tag Team titles from Dino Bravo & Dominic DeNucci on June 26th, 1978 in Madison Square Garden. They lost the titles to Larry Zbyszko & Tony Garea in November. Irwin then went to Florida as Thor the Viking. After losing a loser leave town match to Steve Keirn in Orlando in October 1979, he returned under a mask a few weeks later as the Super Destroyer. In October 1980 he toured All Japan as The Asteroid, then went to Memphis for a couple of weeks before debuting here in late November.

During this feud, the Grappler was the North American champion and Jake Roberts was the Louisiana Heavyweight champion. The Grappler began the feud as Mississippi Heavyweight champ as well but lost that title to Killer Karl Kox in mid-November.
