The McGuirk/Watts Wrestling Almanac - Chapter 11 (Q2 1962)
Welcome to Chapter 11 of The McGuirk/Watts Wrestling Almanac, an in-depth data-driven look at the wrestling territory run by Leroy McGuirk (and later, Bill Watts). The territory is most commonly known as Tri-State Wrestling and/or Mid-South Wrestling, though neither of those names were actually used until September 1979 when Watts split from McGuirk.
Each chapter covers a three-month period of time and will list our exclusive statistics:
1) SPOT (Statistical Position Over Time) Ratings, which measure a wrestlers average position on the cards
2) FEUD (Frequent Encounters Using Data) Scores, which measure the frequency and breadth of a series of matches between the same wrestlers (or teams)
In addition, we list the advertised lineups for all known house shows in the territory during the time period, an index of newcomers and other wrestlers (special attractions, women, midgets, etc) that passed through the territory, and a match-by-match, town-by-town recap of at least one feud during the quarter.

NEW TO THE TERRITORY THIS QUARTER
(wrestlers either making their first-ever appearance as a regular in this territory, their first appearance since Sep 1959, or appearing in a significantly different role/gimmick than when they were here previously)
AL & RAMON TORRES – Along with Enrique Torres, Al (aka Alberto) and Ramon were top stars in the 60s; Enrique was also a big attraction in the 50s while Ramon’s career extended well into the 70s after Alberto passed away in 1971. Al & Ramon won tag team titles in numerous territories, including Stampede, Texas, Florida, Georgia and for McGuirk. While the three are generally regarded as brothers, noted historian Steve Yohe has stated that only 2 of the 3 may have been legitimate brothers, with Ramon believed to be the ‘odd man out’.
BIG BOY BROWN – Carl Dennis Campbell started his wrestling career traveling with carnivals in 1958. He used the ring name Man Mountain Campbell for a few years until changing it to Big Boy Brown, and later to Luke Brown. On March 28th in Fort Smith, Brown (billed as being 6’8”) teamed with Tiny Smith (also billed as 6’8”) for what appears to be the first time anywhere. The two soon began teaming regularly as the Kentuckians and were a top drawing tag team in the 60s, noted for a long-running feud with the Assassins (Tom Renesto & Jody Hamilton) that spanned several different territories.
CHARLIE LAYE – Laye primarily wrestled in southern territories over the course of his 30-plus year career dating back to 1935. He had regular stints in this territory over the years, but this was his first time in the area since 1957.
DANTE & MEPHISTO – This version of the “Dante & Mephisto” team was comprised of Red Donovan (aka Eric Von Brauner) and Louis Papineau. They teamed up here and for Nick Gulas from 1961 to 1963. In an interesting coincidence, their first match in this area saw them on the opposite side of the ring from Frankie Cain, who later achieved significant success as the Great Mephisto.
JIMMY BOGGS – I haven’t been able to find much information on this wrestler. He worked for Gulas both before and after his short stint here.
LEN ROSSI – One of the biggest stars in the history of the Gulas territory, Rossi started his career in New York. He first came to Tennessee in 1958, and as his son was approaching school age the family decided to stay there. He became a fixture of the territory with over 3 dozen separate reigns as a tag team champion in the area. Among his partners for those various reigns were Dick Beyer, Jackie Fargo, Bearcat Brown, Johnny Walker and Don Carson to name a few. His career was cut short after an automobile accident in 1972, though he wrestled a handful of matches from 1977-1979, usually teaming with his son Joey.
PEPE GONZALEZ – Gonzalez (sometimes spelled Gonzales) also used the first names Pedro, Pete, Roberto and Speedy during his decade long career that saw him compete in Texas, southern California, Florida, Portland and other territories. A two-week stint as Texas Heavyweight champion (winning the title from Sputnik Monroe and then losing it to Jack Dalton aka Don Fargo) in 1961 appears to be his only known title reign.
