McGuirk Wrestling Territory: Q4 1976
In the 4th quarter of 1976, not one not two but three babyface turns, the World Junior Heavyweight title tournament finally ends, spoiling the identity of the second Spoiler & more!

NEW TO THE TERRITORY THIS QUARTER
(wrestlers either making their first-ever appearance as a regular in this territory or appearing in a significantly different role/gimmick than when they were here previously)
BILLY ROBINSON – Over the course of a thirty-plus year career that saw him wrestle for virtually every major promotion in the world, his one and only stint in this territory began in October 1976. He left in mid-November for a few weeks for an All Japan tour but returned before the end of the year and would stay through Feb ’77. Robinson got shots against NWA World Heavyweight champ Terry Funk on November 15th in Tulsa and the 16th in Shreveport, winning both by disqualification (in Shreveport, Funk was DQ’d for throwing Billy over the top rope; the finish was likely the same in Tulsa though details are not available).
BOB McMANUS – McManus is probably best known for teaming up with Curtis Smith as a version of the Infernos tag team, replacing Curtis’ brother Rocky in the early 70s. He also wrestled as Bruiser McManus in Gulf Coast and Kentucky.
THE BRUTE – Born Michael Davis (but not to be confused with the other ‘Mike Davis’ known for teaming with Tommy Lane as the Rock n Roll RPMs), he wrestled under several different names over the first ten years of his career, including Beautiful Brutus, the Big O, Mighty Brutus, the Skull and the Brute. But he is probably best known as Bugsy McGraw. He first appeared here as Spoiler #2, teaming up with Don Jardine. When Jardine finished up his run, Spoiler #2 was unmasked and from that point forward billed as the Brute. His biography, Brute Power, released in 2019, is one of the better-reviewed wrestling books out there.
JERRY OATES – Perhaps best known for his stints in Georgia and Heart of America (Central States), Jerry had a few runs here over the years and held both the North American title and the U.S. Tag Team belts (with Killer Karl Kox) in 1977. When Ann Gunkel formed the All-South Wrestling Alliance in late 1972 after being ousted by Buddy Fuller et al. in the aftermath of Ray Gunkel’s death, both Jerry and his brother Ted initially went with Ann. However, Jerry only stayed for two weeks before jumping back to the Fuller/Jones group while Ted stuck with Gunkel.
LEON OGLE – Ogle primarily wrestled in Georgia over the course of his career, primarily in the towns promoted by Fred Ward in the lower half of the state. In a not-at-all shocking coincidence, Ogle was Ward’s son-in-law. Ogle also had stints in Florida, Southeastern and here in addition to a few bouts for Gulas early in his career.
RICK OLIVER – Before he was known as Rip “The Crippler” Oliver, Larry Oliver began his career using the name Rick Oliver. He made his pro debut in Florida in February 1976. He may also have wrestled briefly for Gulas in the spring and came here in mid-November. Held the Pacific Northwest Tag Team titles at least 16 times with various partners and the PNW Heavyweight title at least 12 times.
TROY GRAHAM – Troy Roland Thompson Jr., better known in wrestling circles as “Dream Machine” Troy Graham, had his earliest known matches for Lou Thesz’ Universal Wrestling Association when they ran in Tennessee and in the northeast in the summer of 1976. He also wrestled in the Carolinas for the IWA. After a brief run in the prelims here, he next shows up in Mississippi working for George & Gil Culkin in late 1977, where he is billed as Hippie Graham. This was during a time when hippies were viewed as the “scourge of the earth”, particularly in the south. Several heel wrestlers used the Hippie moniker and gimmick to draw heat in the mid-70s.

NATIONALLY KNOWN STARS
Harley Race, Hiro Matsuda, Ken Mantell, Pat O’Connor and Terry Funk
Matsuda and Mantell came in largely for the “finals” of the NWA World Junior Heavyweight title tournament on September 28th in Shreveport. After a series of elimination matches throughout the territory over the summer, Nelson Royal, Ron Starr, Pat Barrett and Buck Robley qualified for the finals. Matsuda and Mantell were also brought in due to their status as former champs. The finals were billed as round-robin style but in looking at the results it appears to be more of a traditional bracketed tourney. The first three matches saw Barrett beat Robley, Starr beat Mantell and Royal beat Matsuda. The next bout was Royal vs Starr with Barrett appearing to get a bye into the finals. Royal defeated Starr, but the newspaper report says that Royal was “hurt and was no game for Barrett”. Thus, Starr replaced him in the finals, and Barrett pinned Starr to win the tournament and the title.
Harley came in for a few shows in November, facing Abe Jacobs once, Bill Watts twice and getting a shot at Funk once (in Jackson MS on November 17th). In addition to the title defense against Harley and the two previously mentioned against Billy Robinson, Funk also defended against Ken Patera on November 20th in Lawton, OK. He may have defended the title in Chalmette or New Orleans on the 18th but we don’t have records for most of the shows in that market during this time. On the 19th Terry was in Toronto facing Dominic DeNucci.
PART-TIMERS
Jack Howe, Jim Dalton, the Medic (possibly Jim Starr), Oni Wiki Wiki, Rip Tyler (in for a week as part of the Jaggers vs Randy Tyler feud; Rip sided with Jaggers), Tom McCarver and Tommy Tate.
When Rip teamed with Jaggers in Alexandria, LA to face Randy & Bob Sweetan on December 7th, the newspaper writeup states: “Rip Tyler says the Tyler family is tired of Randy giving the Tyler name such a bad rep after the rest of the clan have worked so hard all these years to make it so well respected”. Keep in mind, Rip was the HEEL here, so he’s basically saying Randy gave the family a bad rep by being a “good guy”.

ANATOMY OF A FEUD
Here’s a look at the feud between Bobby Jaggers and Randy Tyler, looking at all of the known matches between them with stipulations noted where available. The matches are arranged chronologically by city, so you can easily see which cities had multiple matches between them.
Keep in mind that some newspapers didn't list details, so just because a match isn't specified as a title match, we don't necessarily know for a fact that it was non-title and the same can apply for stipulation bouts.
Jaggers & Tyler had been a heel tag team for a while here, and on October 5th in Shreveport they got a shot at US Tag Team champs Bob Sweetan & Killer Karl Kox (also heels). The results listed in the newspaper are a little vague, but it seems the match ended in a double disqualification when BOTH teams split up mid-match and partners brawled with their respective partners. There also appears to have been a TV angle to split up Jaggers and Tyler. Sweetan and Tyler both end up as babyfaces, and Sweetan teams with Tyler two weeks later to face Kox & Ken Patera to determine who will get the titles (which was won by Kox & Patera). Jaggers and Tyler start a feud around the horn, which as mentioned earlier, also involved Randy’s brother Rip for a brief time.
