The McGuirk/Watts Wrestling Almanac - Chapter 12 (Q3 1962)
Welcome to Chapter 12 of The McGuirk/Watts Wrestling Almanac, an in-depth data-driven look at the wrestling territory run by Leroy McGuirk (and later, Bill Watts). The territory is most commonly known as Tri-State Wrestling and/or Mid-South Wrestling, though neither of those names were actually used until September 1979 when Watts split from McGuirk.
Each chapter covers a three-month period of time and will list our exclusive statistics:
1) SPOT (Statistical Position Over Time) Ratings, which measure a wrestlers average position on the cards
2) FEUD (Frequent Encounters Using Data) Scores, which measure the frequency and breadth of a series of matches between the same wrestlers (or teams)
In addition, we list the advertised lineups for all known house shows in the territory during the time period, an index of newcomers and other wrestlers (special attractions, women, midgets, etc) that passed through the territory, and a match-by-match, town-by-town recap of at least one feud during the quarter.

NEW TO THE TERRITORY THIS QUARTER
(wrestlers either making their first-ever appearance as a regular in this territory, their first appearance since Sep 1959, or appearing in a significantly different role/gimmick than when they were here previously)
ANDRE DRAPP – Before becoming a professional wrestler, Drapp was a champion bodybuilder known as The Lion of Lorraine (his birthplace in France). It has also been reported that he was a member of the French Resistance in WWII and killed several Nazi soldiers.
DAN O’SHOCKER – Primarily billed as Danno O’Shocker, it appears that he was listed simply as “Dan” O’Shocker during his run here. O’Shocker was a regular tag team partner of Reggie Parks in Mid-Atlantic from 1959 through early 1962.
EL GRAN LOTHARIO – Better known as Jose Lothario, the first several years of his career saw him primarily billed as either “Great Lothario” or “El Gran Lothario”. He spent a significant portion of his career in Texas, mostly in East Texas but also several stints in Amarillo. Among his most frequent opponents were Sputnik Monroe, Johnny Valentine, Boris Malenko and Gran Markus. He frequently teamed with Wahoo McDaniel in Florida; they had two title reigns there in the mid-60s. Trained Shawn Michaels and Gino Hernandez.
ELEPHANT BOY – William Victor Olivas spent the first few years of his career wrestler as Billy Olivas, Juan Olivas and Tony Olivas. In 1950 he worked in southern California as The Bushman. In 1951 he started using the name The Elephant Boy, which became his primary nom de guerre for the remainder of his career.
JERRY MILLER – Miller spent most of his career in the southern territories; he had several significant runs in Gulf Coast. He also used the ring name Duke Miller at times. This was his first stint in the territory but far from his last. He had several other runs here between the late 60s and mid 70s and was a regular opponent for Danny Hodge during that time.
LU KIM – After spending almost 20 years wrestling as Rube Wright, Reuben Haz Wright ‘reinvented’ himself as a Mongolian wrestler named Lu Kim in 1952. He spent the next 10 years using that ring name in numerous territories.
ROCKY SMITH – Best known as one-half of the Infernos, first teaming with Frankie Cain and later with brother Curtis Smith. Unlike many masked tag teams of the era, the Infernos each had distinct characteristics; the “fireball” Inferno had the ability to throw fire, while the “clubfoot” Inferno used a loaded boot. While Rocky is generally considered to have been the “clubfoot” member of the team, it is believed that the team members actually took turns in this role on an alternating basis, since the loaded boot was legitimately uncomfortable to wear.

ANATOMY OF A FEUD
Here’s a look at the feud between Al & Ramon Torres and Jack & Jim Dalton, looking at all of the known matches between them with stipulations noted where available. The matches are arranged chronologically by city, so you can easily see which cities had multiple matches between them.
Keep in mind that some newspapers didn't list details, so just because a match isn't specified as a title match, we don't necessarily know for a fact that it was non-title and the same can apply for stipulation bouts.
The two teams feuded over the U.S. Tag Team titles, which appeared out of thin air in the spring when Jan Madrid & Louie Tillet started being billed as the Southwest Tag Team champions, and the belts were quickly renamed to the U.S. Tag Team titles. The Torres brothers won them from Madrid & Tillet in May. In Tulsa, Little Rock, Wichita Falls and Springfield, the Daltons “won” the belts in the first match of the series in each town. I don’t have results from Oklahoma City, but in all likelihood the same scenario took place. The second week in each town was a rematch, with two referees assigned to the bout in Tulsa, Little Rock and Springfield (and possibly OKC but details are not known; in Wichita Falls it was stated that the Daltons “demanded” a new referee for the second bout). In Tulsa and Little Rock, the Daltons retained the belts, while results are not available for Wichita Falls and OKC. The second match in Springfield, which was also the last match chronologically between the teams, saw the Torres brothers regain the belts. I have no idea how these title switches played out in the rest of the territory and/or if they were acknowledged on TV in various markets.
