In the 1st quarter of 1981, Diamonds are forever but not-so-much for Don Diamond, Jim Garvin and the Super Destroyer fight for months & more!
Here are the SPOT Ratings for the quarter.
NEW TO THE TERRITORY THIS QUARTER
(wrestlers either making their first-ever appearance as a regular in this territory or appearing in a significantly different role/gimmick than when they were here previously)
AFA & SIKA – The famed Wild Samoans had been here previously (for a month in 1974 and possibly a week or so in 1978), but this was their first time in a pushed role. Their wrestling careers are well-documented, and their family tree is well known (if awfully large and at times confusing). Prior to becoming wrestlers, Afa enlisted in the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps and Sika enlisted in the U.S. Merchant Marine. Afa was the first to turn to pro wrestling, in either 1971 or 1972, and Sika joined him shortly thereafter. They started here at the very end of the quarter, so it won’t be until we look at the second quarter that we’ll get to see their rise up the cards.
ASHURA HARA – Making his pro debut in June 1978 in Japan as Susumu Hara, Ashura also wrestled in Calgary and Nova Scotia very early in his career. His three-month run here appears to be his only stint in a U.S. territory. He had been wrestling for the IWE in Japan, but later in 1981 when that promotion folded, he went to All Japan. His first bout for All Japan saw him go to a double countout with Genichiro Tenryu in the semi-main event, beneath only a Baba & Tsuruta vs Brody & Snuka headliner.
CHICK DONOVAN – Amazingly, Donovan is still semi-active 40 years later, making sporadic appearances on independent shows in Georgia. His earliest documented matches were in 1978 in Georgia. After a run in NWA Hollywood in 1980 as “Golden Boy”, he wrestled in Georgia before coming here in February of ’81.
DON DIAMOND – In an early January episode of the TV program (first airing in some markets on January 10th), Ernie Ladd & Leroy Brown faced the non-descript team of TV prelim wrestler Larry Clark and a never-before-seen (in this area) wrestler named Don Diamond. It looked like a routine squash for the reigning Mid-South Tag Team titles. They had their way with Clark, but when Diamond tagged in, things changed. Per correspondent Brian Ockman (of the Mid-South Wrestling Universe Appreciation group on Facebook): “After Clark tagged out Diamond kept Ladd & Leroy on the run. They had their hands full and eventually thru [sic] Diamond over the top rope and [were] disqualified.” Diamond then got a push on TV, winning singles bouts with each successive opponent being slightly higher up on the food chain than the previous one. Starting on the house shows towards the end of the month, Diamond quickly moved up to main event status for a few weeks. He teams with Junkyard Dog for several bouts against Ladd & Brown. It seems, however, that when Buck Robley returned a month later, he took Diamond’s “spot”, with the fans clamoring for Robley and JYD to team up. Remember their tag team feud with the Freebirds in the first half of 1980 had been huge. This pushed Diamond down the cards, and he would hover back-and-forth between Upper Mid-Carder and Mid-Carder status by our SPOT Rating metric for the rest of his run here.
KELLY KINISKI – The son of former NWA World Heavyweight champion Gene Kiniski (and brother of Nick Kiniski, who didn’t turn pro until 1985), Kelly got his start the previous summer in Stampede. This was the first of a few non-descript runs for him in Mid-South over the next few years. In early 1986, Kiniski worked under a mask here as Masked Superstar #2, with a few appearances side-by-side with Masked Superstar (Bill Eadie). It is believed that several house show bouts at the time that advertised Eadie actually had Kiniski under the mask in his place.
RICK CRAVEN – Besides a handful of appearances in the dying days of Gulas’ territory the prior year, I can’t find any other records of a wrestler by this name. It’s very likely he wasn’t anyone of note under a different name, but never say never.
TONY CHARLES – The Wales-born Charles had already had twenty years under his belt as a pro wrestler before coming here for his one and only stint in the territory. The first decade of his career was spent mostly in Great Britain and his earliest known U.S. matches were in 1972 in Tennessee. In 1982 and 1983, he wrestled as under a mask as Checkmate (or The Checkmate) in World Class.

ANATOMY OF A FEUD
Here’s a look at the feud between Jim Garvin and the Super Destroyer (Scott Irwin), looking at all of the known matches between them with stipulations noted where available. The matches are arranged chronologically by city, so you can easily see which cities had multiple matches between them. Keep in mind that some newspapers didn't list details, so just because a match isn't specified as a title match, we don't necessarily know for a fact that it was non-title and the same can apply for stipulation bouts.
As we head into 1981, we start to have fewer results from the house shows. We still have a lot of the lineups, but most newspapers are not reporting results. Where I can, I list results that have been pulled from a variety of sources.
We do, however, have better info on the TV tapings, thanks to Brian Ockman. Here is a chronology of some of the TV angles involving Garvin and Super Destroyer; airdates are listed but of course varied from market to market.
- January 24th: Super Destroyer beat Cocoa Samoa by disqualification when Garvin ran in to attack Destroyer. Two weeks later, a clip is shown of Super D wrestling Garvin and Cocoa interferes to help Garvin win.
- February 14th: Super D tries to attack Garvin but ends up getting his shoulder slammed into the ringpost. Super D’s manager Frank Dusek refuses to let him wrestle injured, so he forfeits his match against Don Diamond later in the episode.
- February 28th: a clip is shown of Garvin wrestling North American champ the Grappler. After a ref bump, Super D runs in wearing a Grappler mask and covers Garvin while a groggy referee unknowingly makes the count and gives Grappler the win.
- March 14th: Garvin gets a shot on TV against Louisiana champ Ernie Ladd. Dusek tries to interfere but it doesn’t work, and Garvin wins the match and the title. This brings the house show feud to a new phase as there are several title bouts. On May 1st at a house show in Shreveport, Super D wins the belt from Garvin.
- May 23rd: a clip is shown of Super D defending the Louisiana title vs Garvin, winning when Grappler (wearing a Super D mask) helps him.
- June 13th: Super D, who had been boasting he wouldn’t wrestle Garvin anymore because he was tired of beating him, faced a masked man named El Gaucho. Gaucho won by disqualification when Dusek interfered. Dusek unmasks Gaucho to reveal … Garvin!
- August 22nd: Garvin beat Super D (who had lost the Louisiana title to Bob Roop a month earlier) with the sleeper, putting an end to this months-long rivalry and sending Super Destroyer packing. He debuts in Mid-Atlantic in early September.
