The McGuirk/Watts Wrestling Almanac - Chapter 14 (Q1 1963)
Welcome to Chapter 14 of The McGuirk/Watts Wrestling Almanac, an in-depth data-driven look at the wrestling territory run by Leroy McGuirk (and later, Bill Watts). The territory is most commonly known as Tri-State Wrestling and/or Mid-South Wrestling, though neither of those names were actually used until September 1979 when Watts split from McGuirk.
Each chapter covers a three-month period of time and will list our exclusive statistics:1) SPOT (Statistical Position Over Time) Ratings, which measure a wrestlers average position on the cards
2) FEUD (Frequent Encounters Using Data) Scores, which measure the frequency and breadth of a series of matches between the same wrestlers (or teams)
In addition, we list the advertised lineups for all known house shows in the territory during the time period, an index of newcomers and other wrestlers (special attractions, women, midgets, etc) that passed through the territory, and a match-by-match, town-by-town recap of at least one feud during the quarter.

NEW TO THE TERRITORY THIS QUARTER
(wrestlers either making their first-ever appearance as a regular in this territory, their first appearance since Sep 1959, or appearing in a significantly different role/gimmick than when they were here previously)
BILL WATTS – In the last chapter I mentioned Watts’ first bouts in the territory. After the broken hand, he comes back in February and becomes a regular, mostly wrestling in tag team matches and moving up to Main Eventer status after a few weeks.
DICK RAINES – Raines wrestled all over in the 30s and 40s, mostly in the U.S. and Canada. A mainstay in Minneapolis and East Texas in particular, he was called “Dirty Dick” because he was allegedly disqualified over 1000 times in his career. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in January 1943 and reportedly helped write a hand-to-hand combat book and taught judo and karate while serving. This was his one and only stint in the McGuirk territory and appears to be the swan song of his career as a full-time wrestler. He does make sporadic appearances in East Texas for a few years afterwards, but many of those matches appear to be versus manager-types, so perhaps are presented as “tough guy wrestler comes out of retirement to get his hands on the bad guy”
ED SHARPE – The wrestling career of Salvatore Thomas Baragiola had two distinct phases. From 1951 to 1958 he wrestled, mostly on the east coast, as Soldier Barry. In early 1959 he went to East Texas and was dubbed Ed Sharpe, often teaming up with Mike Sharpe (father of Iron Mike Sharpe and brother of Ben Sharpe) as a “brother” tag team. This was during a period where Ben was wrestling in California, so Mike was without his real brother and normal tag partner. Ed continued to use that name for the rest of his career. He was said to have been best friends with New Mexico promoter Mike London.
MR. SZABO – The identity of this masked wrestler has been the subject of intense research on my part for the last month or so. I hope one day soon to be able to tell this story, but it’s legitimately filled with more twists and turns than a Russo-helmed episode of Nitro. He was here for just under two months (at least, this masked character was only here for that time frame), getting a big push including two title shots against Lou Thesz. It appears he was injured during a match and then disappeared entirely from the face of the earth.
PEDRO ZAPATA – Probably better known under the ring name Oki Shikina in the 1970s, Pedro Zapata used his real name for much of the first ten years of his career. Debuting in 1959, this was his first stint in the McGuirk territory. He wouldn’t return until after the McGuirk/Watts split, where he became one of the top heels in Leroy’s “new” territory, teaming with Sugar Bear Harris (James “Kamala” Harris).
P.Y. CHUNG – A newspaper clipping from Monroe, LA, promoting the 3/12/63 card there says the following about Chung:
• “reared as an orphan by monks of a Buddist temple” in Japan
• when he was 15 he “seriously injured his karate instructor in an argument over a girl”
• ”barely escaped prison when he permanently injured the judo champion of the Tokyo city police”
In reality, he was Harold Watanabe, a Hawaiian-born former U.S. Marine who spent several years wrestling as P.Y. Chung (or Chong) in the southeast. After finishing up here in early April he went to wrestle for Nick Gulas. It was there he changed his ring name to Tojo Yamamoto, and the rest (as they say) is history.
YOSHINO SATO – Sato and P.Y. Chung worked as a team here; the two had also teamed together in Mid-Atlantic before coming here. Sato began his career in Japan with the JWA, came to the U.S. for about three years, and then seems to have spent the rest of his career in Japan (save for a short run in Southern California in 1965).

NATIONALLY KNOWN STARS
Lou Thesz and Tiny Smith
Thesz wrestled here often enough in a several-week-long period of time to be included in the SPOT Ratings, though he is of course used as a touring attraction. He first came in early January, facing Danny Hodge four times and the Great Bolo twice. Thesz won both bouts against Bolo, and at least one of the bouts with Hodge. Danny did win two by disqualification (after Lou tossed him over the top rope in the third fall), while one result is unknown. At the time, Thesz was billed as the International Heavyweight champion (a title he used mostly in Europe and Japan). Later in January, Thesz defeated Buddy Rogers in Toronto to regain the NWA World Heavyweight title in one of the most historically significant matches of all time. He then returned here in March for a week to defend that title against Hodge four times, Bolo once and Mr. Szabo once (Thesz won the five bouts I have results for). Lou then came back on March 25th for a one-off appearance, a rematch against Szabo.

ANATOMY OF A FEUD
Here’s a look at the feud between the Great Bolo (Al Lovelock) and Mike Clancy, looking at all of the known matches between them with results and stipulations noted where available. The matches are arranged chronologically by city, so you can easily see which cities had multiple matches between them. Keep in mind that some newspapers didn't list details, so just because a match isn't specified as a title match, we don't necessarily know for a fact that it was non-title and the same can apply for stipulation bouts.
JOPLIN
12/22/62 Great Bolo wrestled Mike Clancy to a no-contest when referee Tommy Peterson stopped the bout; Clancy was “butted into bloody unconsciousness” 30 seconds into the third fall. Ringside fans complained that Bolo had slipped an unknown object under his mask prior to winning the second fall, so the match was thrown out.
12/29/62 Great Bolo defeated Mike Clancy; after the bout, Clancy nailed Bolo with a chair shot to the head.
1/5/63 Great Bolo defeated Mike Clancy in a match where the ring was enclosed by a steel fence. Clancy ripped Bolo’s mask off during the bout, but it was said that Bolo’s face was so bloody as to be unrecognizable. Bolo then KO’d Clancy with a foreign object to win the match, then “put the remnants [of the mask] over his bleeding face and limped to the dressing room amidst a deafening chorus of boos”.
2/16/63 Mike Clancy defeated Great Bolo by disqualification after Bolo threw Clancy over the top rope. Bolo was searched for foreign objects by four fans prior to the match and was not allowed to leave the ring between falls. However, Jack Donovan huddled with Bolo in between the second and third fall and was believed to have given Bolo a foreign object.

1/1/63 Great Bolo and Mike Clancy went to a no-decision when both battlers were KO’d
1/15/63 Mike Clancy beat Great Bolo in a 3 out of 5 falls match. During the 4th fall (with Clancy up 2 to 1), Clancy ripped Bolo’s mask off. While Bolo was able to get it back on quickly, he “seemed shaken by it” and Clancy hit an atomic drop to score the win.

1/2/63 Great Bolo and Mike Clancy went to a no-contest
1/9/63 Mike Clancy beat Great Bolo by disqualification in a match with two referees (one inside the ring, one out). Bolo headbutted in-ring referee Tommy Peterson, and when the second referee (Jerry London) entered the ring, Bolo headbutted him too.
