In the 2nd quarter of 1981, a big Superdome card with a tag team title tournament, Ladd “suspended”, Orndorff “oversleeps” & more!

NEW TO THE TERRITORY THIS QUARTER
(wrestlers either making their first-ever appearance as a regular in this territory or appearing in a significantly different role/gimmick than when they were here previously)
BUDDY LANDELL – The spelling of Buddy’s last name differed over the years and in different places. In this particular run, I believe it was spelled with two L’s more often than not. GREAT KABUKI – Both Kabuki and Kerry Von Erich worked TV tapings and some house shows here while also working in East Texas (which was still named Big Time Wrestling; the name change to World Class was about a year away). Kabuki had been wrestling since the mid-1960s, originally using his real name (Akihisa Mera) but then changing it to Akihisa Takachiho. He also used the name Yoshino Sato in Florida before adopting the Kabuki gimmick at the beginning of 1981.
KERRY VON ERICH – As with Kabuki above, Kerry was going back-and-forth between here and East Texas. As a general rule of thumb, they would work the TV tapings in Shreveport (which, based on the calendar, was either taped every other Thursday or perhaps early on Saturdays; they would later shift it to Wednesdays) and the corresponding weekly house show in Shreveport on Friday. They’d occasionally stay and work some of the shows on the weekends as well. Kerry had worked some shows for Leroy McGuirk’s Tri-State Wrestling in 1980, but this appears to be his first stint for Watts.
VINNIE ROMEO – Better known as Vinnie Valentino, he wrestled in numerous territories in the 80s. He spent most of his career as a preliminary wrestler, and his only known title reign seems to be a run with the Central States Wrestling TV title in 86-87. Vinnie (born Vincent Bilotto or Billotto) attended Florida State University on a track and field scholarship, where he excelled in the shot put. Vinnie was trained for wrestling by Buddy Fuller and spent the early part of his career in Tennessee and Florida before coming here in late May.

RETURNING TO THE TERRITORY THIS QUARTER
Kim Duk (last here in ’74), King Cobra, Luke Graham, Paul Orndorff, and Tommy Rich
Orndorff returned to the territory as a babyface after spending the first few months of the year in Southeastern (he also made a few appearances for Tri-State, where his brother Terry was wrestling full-time). Paul was scheduled to face The Grappler on TV in June for a North American title shot, but Orndorff “didn’t show up”. Jake Roberts, who had been wrestling regularly in the mid-cards, says that he went to Orndorff’s hotel room to pick him up, but Paul wasn’t in the lobby and didn’t answer when Jake went to his room and knocked on the door. Grappler is told he must defend the title and is allowed to pick his opponent, with the choices being JYD, Murdoch, Kerry Von Erich, or Jake. Grappler picks Jake, obviously picking who he thinks would be the “easiest” opponent, but Jake stunningly upsets Grappler to win the title. And right on cue, Orndorff walks in the studio pissed off and gets into an argument with Jake. This turned Orndorff heel, with him claiming Jake “let him oversleep on purpose”, retroactively blaming JYD for Paul’s brother getting injured (which would have been in the fall of 1980) and accusing other babyface wrestlers (Murdoch and Diamond) of “interfering in his business”.

NATIONALLY KNOWN STARS
Andre the Giant, the Freebirds (Gordy, Hayes & Roberts), Killer Karl Kox, Mr. Wrestling II, and Ted DiBiase
DiBiase was originally advertised to work the tag team tournament at the Superdome teaming with Buck Robley. When the Freebirds “injured” DiBiase in Georgia, it was acknowledged in Mid-South and Killer Karl Kox was advertised to replace DiBiase. As it turns out, Kox did not appear and Robley teamed with Cocoa Samoa. DiBiase did work here on May 1st in Shreveport, first losing a North American title bout to the Grappler and then defeating Michael Hayes in a lights out match.
Additionally, The Angel (likely Frank Morrell), Paul Ellering, and Steve O had bookings here during the quarter.

ANATOMY OF A FEUD
Here’s a look at the feud between Dick Murdoch & Junkyard Dog and The Samoans (Afa & Sika), looking at all of the known matches between them with results and stipulations noted where available. The matches are arranged chronologically by city, so you can easily see which cities had multiple matches between them. Keep in mind that some newspapers didn't list details, so just because a match isn't specified as a title match, we don't necessarily know for a fact that it was non-title and the same can apply for stipulation bouts.
This feud evolved from an angle involving Ernie Ladd being “suspended”. On April 18th at the Superdome in New Orleans, a tag team tournament was held to fill the vacant Mid-South Tag Team titles. The titles had been held up in the aftermath of a title change on March 30th, where Murdoch & JYD beat Ladd & Leroy Brown in a match with Bill Watts as special referee. “Mid-South officials” ruled that Watts had not been impartial and the belts were held up, conveniently just a couple of weeks before the planned show at the Superdome in need of a special attraction. The tag tourney came down to Murdoch & JYD vs Grappler & Super Destroyer. During the match, a masked man (who was pretty clearly Ladd) interfered and helped Grappler & Super D win the match and the titles.
On the May 16th TV show (this likely refers to its’ airdate in Shreveport and/or New Orleans, the rest of the territory would see it in the following weeks), Ladd claimed the masked man was Sonny King (who was working for Jarrett at the time). The following week, during a match between Ladd and Paul Orndorff, Leroy Brown and a man wearing the same mask as the person who interfered at the Superdome (but who was very clearly a different person) attacked Orndorff, allowing Ladd to do the old “see, I told you it wasn’t me” bit. Two weeks later they stated they had proof it was Ladd at the ‘Dome and that he was suspended.
While all this was going on, Murdoch & JYD had defeated Grappler & Super D to win the Tag Team titles. On the June 27th TV, Ladd returns and says he now has a manager’s license. He said the suspension only applied to wrestling, and he was free to manage. He then announced he would be managing The Samoans, and Ladd challenged Murdoch & JYD to defend the titles against his new team later in the episode. Ladd’s interference led to the Samoans winning the titles and a new feud was off and running. It appears that Murdoch & JYD regained the titles at some point and then the Samoans won them back in late July.
