The McGuirk/Watts Wrestling Almanac - Chapter 17 (Q4 1963)

Welcome to Chapter 17 of The McGuirk/Watts Wrestling Almanac, an in-depth data-driven look at the wrestling territory run by Leroy McGuirk (and later, Bill Watts). The territory is most commonly known as Tri-State Wrestling and/or Mid-South Wrestling, though neither of those names were actually used until September 1979 when Watts split from McGuirk.

Each chapter covers a three-month period of time and will list our exclusive statistics:

1) SPOT (Statistical Position Over Time) Ratings, which measure a wrestlers average position on the cards
2) FEUD (Frequent Encounters Using Data) Scores, which measure the frequency and breadth of a series of matches between the same wrestlers (or teams)
In addition, we list the advertised lineups for all known house shows in the territory during the time period, an index of newcomers and other wrestlers (special attractions, women, midgets, etc) that passed through the territory, and a match-by-match, town-by-town recap of at least one feud during the quarter.

THE McGUIRK/WATTS WRESTLING ALMANAC
CHAPTER 17 (Q4 1963)

NEW TO THE TERRITORY THIS QUARTER
(wrestlers either making their first-ever appearance as a regular in this territory, their first appearance since Sep 1959, or appearing in a significantly different role/gimmick than when they were here previously)

In addition to these newcomers, I’ve been able to uncover the identity of the version of The Mighty Bolo who debuted here in the third quarter. He was unmasked during the fourth quarter and revealed as FRANK MARCONI. He then continued to wrestle here using that name (sometimes billed as Gorilla Marconi). Frank left Mid-Atlantic right before Mighty Bolo showed up here, so it’s a reasonable assumption that it was always Marconi under the hood during this run (though as we’ve mentioned before, different wrestlers portrayed the gimmick here at other times). Marconi was a 20+ year vet by this point in time. Born in Salem, Ohio, he had numerous stints wrestling for Al Haft as well as many other territories. This was his first-ever stint for McGuirk, though he would appear frequently throughout the 60s, including teaming up with Johnny Heidmann as The Executioners here in 1967.

EDDIE SHARKEY – Perhaps best known as the Minnesota-based trainer of countless wrestlers from the area, Sharkey had a modest in-ring career in the 1960s. After his wife, wrestler Princess Little Cloud, had children, Sharkey retired from wrestling to spend more time at home. He took a job as a bartender at a place called Gramma B’s. It was there he met four men who were working as bouncers (Barry Darsow, Richard Rood aka Rick Rude, and Michael Hegstrand and Joe Laurinaitis [Road Warrior Hawk and Animal, respectively]). There are stories of several wrestlers who had been working for Verne Gagne also approaching Sharkey at this time, unhappy with their pay from Verne. Sharkey ended up training the four bouncers and opened his own wrestling promotion (Pro Wrestling America).

KEN HOLLIS – After working as a referee and making a few in-ring appearances in a Louisiana-based promotion, Hollis came here in August. These appear to be the earliest known matches for Hollis (there was another wrestler with the same name who wrestled in the southwest among other places in the 1930s). He continued to wrestle for several years, mostly in the southwest and on the west coast. He did one tour of Japan in 1968 for the JWA; his first match there was against Antonio Inoki, which seems like the very definition of 'trial by fire'.

RON REED – Ronald Read began wrestling in 1962, using the ring name Ron Reed for several years (with a couple of exceptions). The first few months of his career saw him appear in Tennessee and Georgia (he also may have worked briefly in Southern California as Ty Colt). He spent most of 1963 working for the WWWF before going to Arizona in November. He debuted here Christmas week as a babyface named “Cowboy” Ron Reed. He would return here several times over the following years, forming a successful heel tag team with Jack Donovan. In 1969 he changed his ring name to Buddy Colt. And the rest, as they say, is history. Buddy Colt passed away on March 4, 2021 at the age of 86.

TONY BORNE – The father of Matt Borne, “Tough” Tony Borne had a long career in the ring and is best known in the Pacific Northwest. He had a few stints here in the 50s, but this was his first time back here since 1956. Portland mainstays Lonnie (Moondog) Mayne and Shag Thomas were two of Borne’s most frequent opponents over the years. And both men were also among his most frequent tag team partners.

OTHER WRESTLERS NOT LISTED IN THE SPOT RATINGS

NATIONALLY KNOWN STARS

Lou Thesz and “Wild” Red Berry
Thesz came in for six nights, defending the NWA World Heavyweight title against Bill Watts every night. On 9/30 in Tulsa, Thesz won the third fall after a mid-ring collision knocked both men down but Thesz was able to “drape his body” over Watts. Thesz pinned Watts in the third fall the next night in Little Rock after “spinning Watts to the canvas”. Thesz won two straight falls in Springfield on 10/2 (winning the first fall by disqualification). Results from Wichita Falls are not available, and all we know about Oklahoma City on 10/4 is that Thesz won. Finally, on 10/5 in Joplin, Thesz pinned Watts in the third fall when Watts had Thesz caught in a short-arm scissors but as they were rolling around the ring, Watts ended up with his own shoulders down on the mat and was counted down by the referee. Berry, who went home to Pittsburg, KS for the holidays every year no matter where in the world he was working, wrestled in two six-man tags in Joplin while he was home.

Here are the FEUD Scores the quarter.

ANATOMY OF A FEUD

Here’s a look at the feud between Al Lovelock and Tony Borne, looking at all of the known matches between them with results and stipulations noted where available. The matches are arranged chronologically by city, so you can easily see which cities had multiple matches between them. Keep in mind that some newspapers didn't list details, so just because a match isn't specified as a title match, we don't necessarily know for a fact that it was non-title and the same can apply for stipulation bouts.

Lovelock had been a heel here for a solid year straight, with most of that time spent under a mask as The Great Bolo. They did a storyline in several towns where Bolo was “forced” to wrestle without his mask, due to the fact that he often would slip a foreign object under it and use it to defeat his opponents. Meanwhile, Borne was built up and moved up the cards his first few weeks in the territory. While detailed descriptions of house show main events aren’t always available, it seems that Lovelock & Borne would team up for a match and have a falling out either during or after it, leading to one or more singles bouts against one another around the territory.

While Borne won the blowoff matches in four towns, he ended up being the one who left the area. After beating Mike Clancy in the main event of the 12/13 Oklahoma City card, it appears Borne abruptly left, going back to the Pacific Northwest. Lovelock stayed here, though he didn’t wrestle in any of the towns that he lost a “loser leave town” match in for at least a month. They ran an angle on TV that led to his return to those cities in January.

OKLAHOMA CITY
11/22 Loser leave town (card cancelled due to Kennedy assassination)
11/29 Loser leave town: Lovelock wrestled Borne to a draw (no further details)

TULSA
12/9 Texas rules: Borne beat Lovelock
