In the 2nd quarter of 1977, Murdoch “no-shows” a title match, Kox turns face, the brainbuster is banned, the junior heavies return, the debut of a junkyard pup, and more!

MOOSE MOROWSKI – Born Stan Mykietovich in British Columbia, Morowski wrestled under his real name in Canada for a decade. He credits Wally Karbo with giving him the ring name of “Moose Morowski”, which he first used in Stampede in 1967. He came here at the end of May from the AWA for his first and only stint in the territory.
SYLVESTER RITTER – The future Junkyard Dog, Ritter was born in Wadesboro, North Carolina, about 50 miles southeast of Charlotte. Ritter was an offensive lineman at Anson County High School and Fayetteville State, graduating from the latter with a degree in Political Science. Ritter had a tryout with the Houston Oilers in 1975 and was signed as a free agent by the Green Bay Packers in April 1976. He suffered a knee injury in an off-season camp and was waived by the Packers in October. His earliest documented wrestling match was November 11th, 1976 in Orangeburg, SC, where he was billed as “Sylvester Superman Ritter” for a match against “Hippy” Mike Boyette. He made several appearances for the IWA (the promotion Eddie Einhorn launched in 1975, but by 1976 was being run by Pedro Martinez’ son Ron in Virginia and the Carolinas) over the following couple of months. His first appearance here was on March 28th in Tulsa, when he subbed for Silento Rodriguez and defeated Abe Jacobs.
TERRY SAWYER – No relation to Buzz or Brett, Terry wrestled in various territories from 1972 through 1980. He had 2 brief runs with the Canadian Heavyweight title in the Maritimes, feuding with David Schultz over the championship. He also had 2 brief tag title runs, one in Southern California with Victor Rivera and one for Jarrett teaming with Plowboy Frazier. His run here coincided with the return of several junior heavyweights including NWA World Junior Heavyweight champ Nelson Royal (see “OTHER WRESTLERS…” section below). Sawyer got at least 2 title shots against Royal, one in Shreveport and one in Vicksburg.

Bruiser Brody, Cyclone Negro, Dick Slater, Dory Funk Jr., Harley Race, Hiro Matsuda, John Studd, Lars Anderson, Nelson Royal, and Pat O’Connor.
Matsuda and Royal, along with Ken Mantell and Pat Barrett, all made appearances here during the quarter. This was the first time the major players in the NWA’s Junior Heavyweight division had been here since the previous fall, when Royal won the World Junior Heavyweight title from Ron Starr (who had beaten Barrett to win it just a few days prior). Royal defended the title here against Barrett, Terry Sawyer, and Matsuda in June.
Brody was booked for three matches against Bill Watts, two in Oklahoma City and one in Shreveport, with each match about a month apart. Watts also faced Dory Jr. in April in Shreveport, John Studd three weeks later also in Shreveport, and got four shots at NWA World Heavyweight champ Harley Race. Harley also defended the title against Bob Sweetan, Dick Murdoch, Jerry Oates, and Vic Rossitani during the quarter, coming in for several dates in late March/early April and a week in May.
Watts having big matches with name wrestlers from outside the territory like Brody, Dory and Studd was building him up for a title change that happened on June 20th in Tulsa in a match he wasn’t originally advertised in. From issue #283 of the territory’s program (a Norman Kietzer publication, used with permission from Arcadian Vanguard):
Watts and Hansen would have a rematch the following week. While that match technically happened in June (on the 27th), we will cover it (and the big angle that occurred afterwards) when we look at the third quarter since the match occurred the week ending July 3rd.

ANATOMY OF A FEUD
Here’s a look at the feud between Jerry Oates & Killer Karl Kox and The Medics, looking at all of the known matches between them with stipulations noted where available. The matches are arranged chronologically by city, so you can easily see which cities had multiple matches between them. Keep in mind that some newspapers didn't list details, so just because a match isn't specified as a title match, we don't necessarily know for a fact that it was non-title and the same can apply for stipulation bouts.

Kox had a pretty interesting quarter. In April, he was feuding with Jerry Oates, with at least one televised angle having Kox injure Oates with the brainbuster (which had been deemed an “illegal” hold and wrestlers would be fined for using it). Kox had also been teaming with Mr. Sakurada (Kazuo Sakurada aka Kendo Nagasaki), and the two heels found themselves in line for shots against U.S. Tag Team champions (and fellow heels) The Medics. Details are sketchy, but I believe another TV angle saw the Medics and manager Scandor Akbar attack Sakurada, injuring him. Kox then apparently convinced his former rival Oates to team with him against the Medics. On at least one occasion, they used the storyline where both men “posted a bond … to make certain there is no double cross”. Right around the time Kox turned babyface, Leroy McGuirk announced that any wrestler who used the brainbuster would receive an automatic 30 day suspension, with Akbar apparently being the one who pressured Leroy to make this ultimatum. This aspect of the storyline will be important as we get into the third quarter later this year on the blog.

6/7 Oates & Kox won in a US Tag Team title match. This was reported as a title change the next day in the newspaper; however, the following week it was reported the title was “held up” because Kox had used the “illegal” brainbuster during the bout
