The McGuirk/Watts Wrestling Almanac - Chapter 18 (Q1 1964)

Welcome to Chapter 18 of The McGuirk/Watts Wrestling Almanac, an in-depth data-driven look at the wrestling territory run by Leroy McGuirk (and later, Bill Watts). The territory is most commonly known as Tri-State Wrestling and/or Mid-South Wrestling, though neither of those names were actually used until September 1979 when Watts split from McGuirk.

Each chapter covers a three-month period of time and will list our exclusive statistics:

1) SPOT (Statistical Position Over Time) Ratings, which measure a wrestlers average position on the cards
2) FEUD (Frequent Encounters Using Data) Scores, which measure the frequency and breadth of a series of matches between the same wrestlers (or teams)
In addition, we list the advertised lineups for all known house shows in the territory during the time period, an index of newcomers and other wrestlers (special attractions, women, midgets, etc) that passed through the territory, and a match-by-match, town-by-town recap of at least one feud during the quarter.

THE McGUIRK/WATTS WRESTLING ALMANAC
CHAPTER 18 (Q1 1964)

NEW TO THE TERRITORY THIS QUARTER
(wrestlers either making their first-ever appearance as a regular in this territory, their first appearance since Sep 1959, or appearing in a significantly different role/gimmick than when they were here previously)

BENNIE MATTA – A pro since 1952, Matta (generally spelled Benny but sometimes Bennie) had a few short runs here in the ‘50s, but this was his first time back since December of 1957. He spent most of his career wrestling in East Texas and was known for his “mule kick”. Matta joined the U.S. Merchant Marines at the age of 16 and later transferred to the Marine Corps. After being honorably discharged, he began his wrestling career. At the age of 23 he married Tillie Cantu, a woman he had first met in middle school; the two were married for 59 years until Bennie’s death in November 2011. As his wrestling career wound down, he became involved in two family businesses in the San Antonio area: Matta’s Auto Supply and Matta’s Hill Country Playground (which was the site of at least three wrestling shows in later years)

CHIN LEE – Lee is believed to have been born in Quebec. I can’t find any record of him wrestling prior to this stint for McGuirk (there appears to have been another wrestler who used the ring name “Chin Lee” on occasion in the 30s & 40s but was primarily known as “Ching Lee”). After spending a couple of years primarily competing in the southern U.S. territories, he spent a good portion of the rest of his career in Canada. He teamed with Sugi Sito (the uncle of “Black Cat” Victor Mar) regularly in Stampede in 1971 & 1972, where they held the International Tag Team titles.

INDIO PAMPERO – Born in Argentina in 1927, Alberto Antonio Amessa appears to have wrestled under many different names over the course of his career. He first appeared in the U.S. in the early 60s, wrestling as El Medico #2 in East Texas (and there doesn’t seem to have been an “El Medico #1” there at the time). Other ring names over the years according to wrestlingdata.com included Indio Joe, Pedro Amessa, Tony Lazzari, El Furioso, and Tony Romano. In late 1965 he worked for McGuirk as El Medico and was unmasked in several cities before he finished up in January 1966.

JOHNNY KACE – Kace spent most of his career in the Upper Midwest, wrestling regularly for Fred Kohler in the 50s and the AWA in the 60s as well as various other territories. This was his only stint in the McGuirk territory. Kace played football at Marquette University and was also captain of the wrestling team. From 1967 through 1970, he was a teacher at Emmons Grade School in Antioch IL; he continued to wrestle part-time as well as receiving his master’s degree in School Administration in 1970. From 1971 to 1984 he served as school superintendent of the Emmons Grade School District.

PAT PATTERSON – Still in his early 20s, Patterson had a brief run here as a heel billed as “Killer” Pat Patterson and sometimes referred to as the “New York State champion”. For more on the first several years of Patterson’s career, read my blog post from last July: http://www.chartingtheterritories.com/2020/07/looking-at-pat-patterson-in-mcguirk.html

PIERRE DEGLANE – Donald Laurent Lortie Sr. was born in 1930 in Montreal. He began wrestling professionally in the early 50s, mostly as Don (or Donald) Lortie in Canada and as Pierre DeGlane in the U.S. He teamed up with Frank Martinez as a version of The Medics, a masked tag team. The two worked together for many territories in the first half of the 60s including Gulas, Mid-Atlantic, East Texas, and Gulf Coast. They came here and worked as The Medics in 1966.

STAN PULASKI – Eric Pomeroy was born in 1933 in St. Johns, Newfoundland. Sources list him as turning pro at the age of 18, but detailed records on his career are sketchy until the early 60s. He used several different ring names over the years, with the most prevalent being Eric Pomeroy, Stan Vachon (billed as a brother of Mad Dog and Butcher), and Stan Pulaski. An automobile accident (either in late 1973 or in 1974) cut his career short. He settled in Nebraska and worked as head of maintenance for the Osceola Good Samaritan Society for over 20 years. He also worked as a valet for the Nebraska Horse Racing Commission.

TONY MANOS – Born in Greece, Antonio Manousos emigrated to Toronto in 1951, working in the restaurant industry for a few years before turning to professional wrestling. Manos wrestled for numerous territories in the 60s before retiring in 1967. Later that year, while visiting Greece, he met a woman named Maria; the two were married the following year and first lived in Canada before relocating to Charlotte in 1978. Tony purchased Woodbutcher’s Deli in Charlotte in 1992 and ran the business until he retired in 2004.

RETURNING TO THE TERRITORY THIS QUARTER

The only full-timer that came in during the quarter having been here previously (since October 1959) was Kit Fox.

OTHER WRESTLERS NOT LISTED IN THE SPOT RATINGS

NATIONALLY KNOWN STARS
Danny McShain, Pat O’Connor, and “Wild” Red Berry.
McShain, who was wrestling in East Texas at the time, came in for one shot in Oklahoma City to put over Antone Leone. O’Connor came in from Central States to wrestle Karol Krauser in Joplin in January. The storyline was that Krauser needed to beat O’Connor to get a crack at NWA World Junior Heavyweight champ Danny Hodge; O’Connor won the match after Krauser was disqualified in the third fall for “using the ropes for illegal leverage in trying to pin O’Connor”.

PART-TIMERS
Fritz Kruger, Mike Romano, Sonny Myers (full-time in Central States but worked three shows for McGuirk in Springfield), and Tommy Peterson.

WOMEN WRESTLERS
Betty Ann Spencer, Fran Gravette, Judy Glover, and Sweet Georgia Brown.
Their average SPOT Rating here was a .59

Here are the FEUD Scores for the quarter.

ANATOMY OF A FEUD

Here’s a look at the feud between Antone Leone and Danny Hodge, looking at all of the known matches between them with stipulations noted where available. The matches are arranged chronologically by city, so you can easily see which cities had multiple matches between them. Keep in mind that some newspapers didn't list details, so just because a match isn't specified as a title match, we don't necessarily know for a fact that it was non-title and the same can apply for stipulation bouts.

This feud appears to have been set up by Leone claiming that Hodge was “ducking him” and he “demanded that the National Wrestling Alliance declare the title vacant”.

OKLAHOMA CITY
1/17 Hodge won in an NWA World Junior Heavyweight title match
1/31 Hodge won in an NWA World Junior Heavyweight title match
2/7 Hodge won

TULSA
2/3 Hodge beat Leone in a “disputed decision” in an NWA World Junior Heavyweight title match
2/17 Hodge beat Leone, winning the third fall by disqualification in an NWA World Junior Heavyweight title match with two referees, one (Red McKim) inside the ring and the other (Leo Voss) outside the ring; Leone had previously complained that “referees were being swayed in their judgment by Hodge’s great popularity with the fans”
3/16 Hodge won in an NWA World Junior Heavyweight title match

LITTLE ROCK
2/4 Hodge won by disqualification in an NWA World Junior Heavyweight title match after Leone “knocked Hodge out of the ring and stomped the champ every time he tried to get back into the ring”
2/11 Hodge beat Leone in an NWA World Junior Heavyweight title match with two referees. The newspaper reported that at one point during the third fall Hodge “fell backwards with Leone sprawled on top of him” leading to an apparent pin by Leone. However, “officials of the State Athletic Commission at ringside ruled that the pin wasn’t clean and ordered the match to go on”. As with Tulsa the following week, the two referees stipulation had been set up by Leone protesting that “prejudiced officiating kept him from winning the title”
2/25 Hodge beat Leone in an NWA World Junior Heavyweight title match with special referee Al Lovelock

SPRINGFIELD
2/12 Hodge beat Leone by disqualification in an NWA World Junior Heavyweight title match; the newspaper report says that in the third fall, “Leone put Hodge’s foot over a ring rope and started jumping on it. Referee Leo Voss started to disqualify the Ripper [Leone], but Hodge won’t [sic] accept the ruling. Voss then called a 3-minute rest period before resuming the action. While Hodge was getting first aid for a badly battered ankle, Leone went back into action, stomping the injured champion in spite of the referee’s attempts at restraint.” Despite losing the match, Leone “grabbed the championship belt and raced out the back” of the venue
2/19 Hodge beat Leone by disqualification in an NWA World Junior Heavyweight title match with two referees. In the third fall, there was a double pin, but in-ring referee Tom Bradley only saw Hodge’s shoulders down. As Leone retrieved the title belt and began to celebrate, “ringside officials … informed Bradley of the double pin … and after a discussion it was decided to continue the match”. Ali Bey then came out to assist Leone in double-teaming Hodge, leading to the disqualification

WICHITA FALLS
2/13 Hodge beat Leone in an NWA World Junior Heavyweight title match; during the match referee Tommy Peterson was knocked out of the ring and unable to count when Leone had Hodge pinned. When Hodge turned the tables and had Leone down for a pin, wrestler Ron Reed jumped into the ring and counted the pinfall
2/20 Results unknown; NWA World Junior Heavyweight title match with two referees
3/5 Results unknown; NWA World Junior Heavyweight title match

SHREVEPORT
3/23 Hodge beat Leone in an NWA World Junior Heavyweight title match
