McGuirk Wrestling Territory: Q3 1977

In the 3rd quarter of 1977, Murdoch breaks bad, the debut of not one but two future husbands of the boss’ daughter, the babyface roster includes a healthy diet of pork chops & candy & ‘oates’, and more!

-----

Here is the roster for the quarter. Wrestlers are listed in descending order by their average SPOT Rating during the quarter. Directly below their week-by-week SPOT Ratings is a list of that wrestler's Frequent Partners and Frequent Opponents (if applicable):

NEW TO THE TERRITORY THIS QUARTER
(wrestlers either making their first-ever appearance as a regular in this territory or appearing in a significantly different role/gimmick than when they were here previously)

BRIAN BLAIR – Blair turned pro earlier in the year, wrestling in Florida for a few months after being trained by Hiro Matsuda. He would later marry Mike McGuirk, daughter of Leroy. Blair later served as County Commissioner in Hillsborough County (Florida) and currently serves as the President & CEO of the Cauliflower Alley Club.

BUDDY DIXON – This is probably a wrestler trained by Joe Mercer aka Joe Pizza, who also trained Lynn Denton. After several weeks here, I can’t really find any other records for him except for a show promoted by GCW in Anniston, Alabama in 1979 (which may not have even been the same guy). It’s always possible he used another name. There’s also records of a ‘Buddy Dixon’ working in Arizona in 1976-1977. If I had to make an educated guess, I’d say they were two different people.

CARL FERGIE – A cousin of Jerry Lawler (Lawler’s mother and Carl’s father were brother and sister; another sister was Wayne Ferris’ mother), these appearances are the earliest documented matches of Fergie’s career. Carl stayed close to his home state of Tennessee for virtually his entire career. He currently sells insurance based out of Jackson, Tennessee.

DENNY ALBERTS – Alberts’s earliest documented in-ring appearances were in 1975 for Big Time Wrestling (Detroit). He also wrestled for Gulas, Amarillo, Central States, Georgia, and other territories over the course of a career that lasted until 1983. I believe footage of him being destroyed by The Sheik is featured in the movie I Like To Hurt People.

DOUG SOMERS – Douglas Duane Somerson grew up in Minnesota. He got his start by setting up rings, taking tickets, and driving the ring truck while still in high school. It was there that he met another youngster also helping out in the hopes of eventually becoming a wrestler by the name of Buddy Rose. Somers was married to Mike McGuirk in later years, following her marriage to Blair.

JIMMY GOLDEN – The son of Billy Golden and relative of approximately nine thousand members of the Fuller/Welch/Fields wrestling clan, Jimmy turned pro in the late 60s. This was his only stint in the McGuirk/Watts territory.

LARRY BOOKER – Later known as Larry Latham and Moondog Spot, Booker’s name first shows up on some outlaw shows in 1976 in Kentucky and Arkansas. In June 1979, Booker & Wayne Ferris faced Jerry Lawler & Bill Dundee in Tupelo, Mississippi in match which evolved (devolved)? into the legendary “Concession Stand Brawl”.

LYNN DENTON – After wrestling on a handful of shows promoted by his trainer Joe Mercer, Denton spent about a month wrestling in Amarillo before coming here. In his autobiography, he mentions getting muscle-building assistance from Pork Chop Cash during this run for Leroy. He would come back to the area for a big run 1980 (after Watts split from Leroy) as The Grappler.

MIKE HAMMER – After a decade-long career in the ring using the names Mike Hammer, Wayne Hammer, and Mike Blood, Wayne Ermatinger reinvented himself as a self-proclaimed “artist in residence” at various St. Louis establishments, including a restaurant named Mangia Italiano, where he spent several years painting a mural depicting his “singular interpretation of history”. Wayne passed away in 2019.

RAY CANDY – Ray turned pro in 1973, first wrestling for Ann Gunkel’s All-South promotion in Georgia. He was a babyface in several territories throughout the 70s and early 80s. In 1983, he was teamed up with Leroy Brown, with Candy changing his ring name to Kareem Muhammed and Brown changing his to Elijah Akeem. It’s been said they were originally to be billed as the “Zimbabwe Express”, but that Blackjack Mulligan inadvertently said “Zambuie” instead of “Zimbabwe” and the name stuck.

TOM SHAFT – “Boogaloo” Tom Shaft wrestled for a little over a decade in various territories. Billed as a former boxer, Shaft is believed to have had some legitimate experience in that field as well as in tough-man competitions. Better on the mic than in the ring, he is said to have influenced the mic work of Troy “Dream Machine” Graham and Michael Hayes.

RETURNING TO THE TERRITORY THIS QUARTER

The Assassin (Jody Hamilton; returning for the first time since 1967), David Nevins, Frank Dalton, Hiro Matsuda, Nelson Royal, Scandor Akbar (returning to in-ring competition after being injured earlier in the year; also still working as a manager), and Treach Phillips.

OTHER WRESTLERS NOT LISTED IN THE SPOT RATINGS

NATIONALLY KNOWN STARS
Dale Lewis, Dusty Rhodes, Grizzly Smith, Harley Race, Jack Brisco, Pat O’Connor, Thunderbolt Patterson, and Tony Atlas

PART-TIMERS OR JUST PASSING THROUGH
Hans Schroeder, Jack Curtis Jr., Jim Cook, Luis Martinez, Reno Tuufuli, Rick Davidson, Rick Oliver, Shannon Powell, SIlento Rodriguez, and Tama Samoa (while Cocoa Samoa used that ring name at various times, he is in Portland when ‘Tama’ is booked here; it’s possible this was Reno Tuufuli and he was billed under both names for his handful of bookings here)

WOMEN WRESTLERS
Joyce Grable, Leilani Kai, Marie Laveau, Princess Little Dove, Terri Shane, Toni Rose, Vicki Williams, and Winona Littleheart
Their average SPOT Rating here was a .70

MANAGERS
Scandor Akbar continued to manage The Medics and added Dick Murdoch to his stable when Murdoch returned from his “suspension” (see Champions & Known Title Changes below for more info)

CHAMPIONS & KNOWN TITLE CHANGES

NOTE: Title histories are sometimes not “linear”; title changes can be acknowledged in one market but not others, or perhaps acknowledged in others at a later date. Also, the concept of titles being “held up” can sometimes refer to a town-specific angle to build to a rematch and may not be acknowledged in other markets. This represents my best effort to accurately portray title histories using the tools now available. While I do try to put these histories together on my own, I often refer to wrestling-titles.com and wrestlingdata.com

NORTH AMERICAN HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE
Bill Watts won the title from Stan Hansen on June 20th in Tulsa. The match was originally scheduled as Hansen facing Murdoch, but in the first layer of one of those intricate ‘Watts specials’ angles, Murdoch “missed his flight” and Watts was given the title shot instead. Concurrently to this, Scandor Akbar was habitually complaining about Killer Karl Kox’ repeated use of the brainbuster, which had been deemed illegal. Kox continued to use the hold, apparently satisfied with paying repeated fines as a small price to pay for inflicting damage in his hated rival. So it was announced that any wrestler who used the brainbuster would be suspended for 30 days. Watts and Hansen had a rematch for the N.A. title on June 27th, and Dick Murdoch was also on the card. After Watts won his match, Murdoch confronted him and attacked him. He ended up giving Watts the brainbuster, which led to him being suspended for 30 days (conveniently at the same time he had a tour of Japan scheduled *wink wink*). When Murdoch returned from “suspension”, he was aligned with Akbar. On August 4th, Murdoch beat Watts to win the title in New Orleans. Jerry Oates was billed as having defeated Murdoch to win the title in Albuquerque approximately two weeks later, but that was likely a phantom title change.

U.S. TAG TEAM TITLES
The Medics are the champs at the beginning of the quarter (some sources list Oates & Kox as having won the titles and losing them back to the Medics in early July, but I strongly believe this to be incorrect). Mike George & Pork Chop Cash won the titles on August 16th in Shreveport and lost them back to the Medics shortly thereafter; according to an article in one of the programs, the Medics regained them at a TV taping.

NWA WORLD JUNIOR HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE
Nelson Royal came here for a few weeks to defend the title against Hiro Matsuda. Hiro, like Royal, was just brought in for a few weeks; presumably, the territory didn’t have a ready-made option for the role of challenger.

ANATOMY OF A FEUD

Here’s a look at the feud between Eric the Red and Vic Rossitani, looking at all the known matches between them with stipulations noted where available. The matches are arranged chronologically by city, so you can easily see which cities had multiple matches between them.

Keep in mind that some newspapers didn't list details, so just because a match isn't specified as a title match, we don't necessarily know for a fact that it was non-title and the same can apply for stipulation bouts.

The two had feuded briefly in this territory five years earlier, when Vic was known as Vic Muehler. I don’t know if they acknowledged their past “beef” this time around. Eric always brought a large bone (said to be a whale bone) to ringside with him, and this often came into play during matches. As a general rule of thumb, the feud progressed to a no disqualification match in many cities, with an additional Texas death match in some. It appears Eric “won” the feud in most towns. He ends up being a challenger for Jerry Oates and the North American title whereas Vic leaves the territory at the beginning of October. In addition to numerous singles matches, the two were occasionally pitted on opposite sides of tag team matches; for the purposes of simplicity, only the singles bouts between the two are listed below.
