The McGuirk/Watts Wrestling Almanac - Chapter 21 (Q4 1964)

Welcome to Chapter 21 of The McGuirk/Watts Wrestling Almanac, an in-depth data-driven look at the wrestling territory run by Leroy McGuirk (and later, Bill Watts). The territory is most commonly known as Tri-State Wrestling and/or Mid-South Wrestling, though neither of those names were actually used until September 1979 when Watts split from McGuirk.

Each chapter covers a three-month period of time and will list our exclusive statistics:

1) SPOT (Statistical Position Over Time) Ratings, which measure a wrestlers average position on the cards
2) Frequent Partners & Frequent Opponents, which let you see who a wrestler was teaming up with on a regular basis (if any) and who they were regularly wrestling against in meaningful matches high up on the cards
In addition, we list the advertised lineups for all known house shows in the territory during the time period, an index of newcomers and other wrestlers (special attractions, women, midgets, etc) that passed through the territory, and a match-by-match, town-by-town recap of at least one feud during the quarter.

THE McGUIRK/WATTS WRESTLING ALMANAC
CHAPTER 21 (Q4 1964)

NEW TO THE TERRITORY THIS QUARTER
(wrestlers either making their first-ever appearance as a regular in this territory, their first appearance since Sep 1959, or appearing in a significantly different role/gimmick than when they were here previously)

AL VELASCO – Usually billed as Alvaro Velasco, he competed in Mexico and the southern part of the U.S. for over 20 years. Later in his career, he teamed up with Tony Gonzalez as a version of the Medics, and also wore a mask as The Challenger for Ann Gunkel.

COUSIN ALFRED – Teamed here with Willie Garrett as the latest version of the Scufflin’ Hillbillies. Previously, he had served as manager for a couple of earlier versions of the team, which originally consisted of Chuck Conley & Rip Collins and later included Garrett and Vic Nichols.

KEN LUCAS – Best remembered as a long-time babyface in Gulf Coast (among other territories) and the trainer and early tag team partner of Ricky Morton, you may be surprised to learn he wrestled as a heel in a few different places in the 60s. He wrestled in Amarillo earlier in the year, then spent a few months in Arizona before coming here. He held tag team titles with numerous different partners over the years, including the aforementioned Morton, Dennis Hall, Chris Lucas (Paul Christy), Mike DiBiase, and Sputnik Monroe among others.

JOHN GUDISKI – There are records of a John Gudiski competing from 1934 to 1942 for various promoters, including Jack Pfefer, Al Haft, and Fred Kohler. Then, in 1963, the name shows up again for a few years wrestling in Mid-Atlantic, Florida, Arizona, and here. While it is entirely possible that it’s the same person with a twenty-year gap in their career (and there’s always a remote possibility that they competed under a different name during that time), it is more likely that these are two different people, though I have no evidence one way or another. The Gudiski that wrestled in the 30s and 40s would have been in his late 40s by 1964, and an article in a North Carolina newspaper in 1964 referred to Gudiski as a “newcomer”. This in my eyes makes it slightly more likely that it’s two different people, as it seems odd to refer to someone in their mid-40s as a newcomer even if they’d never wrestled in that particular area before. In 1941, an article in the Brooklyn (NY) Daily Eagle mentions professional wrestler John Gudiski being stationed as a draftee in the Army in the DEML section. Per my googling, DEML stands for Detached Enlisted Men’s List, and often referred to enlisted men assigned to the US Military Academy; an educated guess would be that he became a wrestling and/or combat instructor for the Army.

TIM WOODS – George Burrell Woodin was born in either Charlotte, NC or Utica, NY (depending on the source). He had a successful collegiate wrestling career at Michigan State, finishing second in his weight class at the NCAA tournament in 1958 and 1959. He debuted as a pro in 1963, wrestling for the WWWF for about a year before several-month stints in Florida and Mid-Atlantic. He came here in mid-November and stayed through the following April. Later in 1964, Joe Dusek gave him the gimmick that would make him famous, the masked Mr. Wrestling.

CHAMPIONS & KNOWN TITLE CHANGES
NOTE: Title histories are sometimes not “linear”; title changes can be acknowledged in one market but not others, or perhaps acknowledged in others at a later date. Also, the concept of titles being “held up” can sometimes refer to a town-specific angle to build to a rematch and may not be acknowledged in other markets. This represents my best effort to accurately portray title histories using the tools now available. While I do try to put these histories together on my own, I often refer to wrestling-titles.com and wrestlingdata.com

NWA WORLD JUNIOR HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE
Hiro Matsuda began the fourth quarter as champion, having held the title since July 11th when he beat Danny Hodge in Tampa. Both Matsuda and Hodge came here in August, with Hodge angling for a rematch on his “home turf”. Meanwhile, another former champion, Angelo Savoldi, returned here for the first time since 1960, when he originally had dropped the title to Hodge (and yet another former champ, Mike Clancy, returned to the area the same week as Savoldi). In what reads like a pretty basic yet effective storyline, just as it seemed Hodge was on the verge of regaining the title, Savoldi swooped in and beat Matsuda to win it on November 13th in Oklahoma City. This would then lead to Hodge chasing Savoldi for the remainder of the year.

MISSOURI JUNIOR HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE
The title, last held by Karol Krauser, was declared vacant at some point after he passed away in September. A one-night tournament was held in Springfield on November 11th, with Hodge beating Lon Stuart in the finals. In promoting the tournament, it was also announced that the winner would get a World Junior Heavyweight title shot the following week. In yet another simple twist to Hodge’s “chasing Matsuda” storyline, Matsuda’s title loss came in between these two shows, turning Hodge’s presumptive title shot on the 18th into a non-title match vs Matsuda.

SOUTHWEST TAG TEAM TITLES
These were last acknowledged in August, when Mike Gallagher & Nelson Royal won them from Jerry Kozak & Bobby Graham. With Gallagher finishing up here in late October, it seems these titles were ‘future endeavored’ for the time being.

ANATOMY OF A FEUD

Here’s a look at the feud between Danny Hodge and Hiro Matsuda/Angelo Savoldi, looking at all the known matches between them with stipulations noted where available. The matches are arranged chronologically by city, so you can easily see which cities had multiple matches between them.

Keep in mind that some newspapers didn't list details, so just because a match isn't specified as a title match, we don't necessarily know for a fact that it was non-title and the same can apply for stipulation bouts.

The details surrounding this feud are described in the ‘Champions & Known Title Changes’ section above. For this feud, we’re looking at all singles matches between any combination of Hodge, Matsuda, and Savoldi through the end of ’64.

JOPLIN
11/14/64 This was originally advertised as Hodge vs Matsuda for the title. With Savoldi winning the belt the night before, it was changed to Hodge vs Savoldi in a title match, which Hodge won by disqualification when Savoldi threw him over the top rope in the second fall (Hodge had won the first fall by pin)

OKLAHOMA CITY
10/30/64 Hodge wrestled Matsuda to a 90-minute time limit draw in a title match, with each man winning one fall
11/6/64 Matsuda defended the title against Hodge; according to newspaper accounts, Hodge was knocked unconscious in the third fall when both men fell off the top rope, with Hodge landing on his head with Matsuda on top of him
11/13/64 Savoldi beat Matsuda to win the title
11/20/64 Savoldi beat Matsuda in a title match

SPRINGFIELD
11/4/64 Hodge wrestled Matsuda to a 90-minute time limit draw in a title match, with each man winning one fall

12/2/64 Savoldi beat Hodge in a title match when Hodge had picked up Savoldi but stumbled backwards and ended up being pinned
12/9/64 Savoldi beat Hodge by countout in a title match; in the third fall, both men were fighting on the ring apron when Hodge knocked Savoldi back into the ring just before the ten count

TULSA
