The McGuirk/Watts Wrestling Almanac - Chapter 23 (Q2 1965)

Welcome to Chapter 23 of The McGuirk/Watts Wrestling Almanac, an in-depth data-driven look at the wrestling territory run by Leroy McGuirk (and later, Bill Watts). The territory is most commonly known as Tri-State Wrestling and/or Mid-South Wrestling, though neither of those names were actually used until September 1979 when Watts split from McGuirk.

Each chapter covers a three-month period of time and will list our exclusive statistics:

1) SPOT (Statistical Position Over Time) Ratings, which measure a wrestlers average position on the cards
2) Frequent Partners & Frequent Opponents, which let you see who a wrestler was teaming up with on a regular basis (if any) and who they were regularly wrestling against in meaningful matches high up on the cards
In addition, we list the advertised lineups for all known house shows in the territory during the time period, an index of newcomers and other wrestlers (special attractions, women, midgets, etc) that passed through the territory, and a match-by-match, town-by-town recap of at least one feud during the quarter.

THE McGUIRK/WATTS WRESTLING ALMANAC
CHAPTER 23 (Q2 1965)

Here is the roster for the quarter. Wrestlers are listed in descending order by their average SPOT Rating during the quarter. Directly below their week-by-week SPOT Ratings is a list of their Frequent Partners and Frequent Opponents (if applicable):

NEW TO THE TERRITORY THIS QUARTER
(wrestlers either making their first-ever appearance as a regular in this territory, their first appearance since Sep 1959, or appearing in a significantly different role/gimmick than when they were here previously)

BOBBY SHANE – Robert Lee Schoenberger was born in 1945 and turned pro in May 1964, a few months shy of his 19th birthday. Shane came here in early April from Central States, working as a babyface and billed as a “teen sensation.” He got a nice push for a 19-year-old barely starting his second year as a pro, getting victories over various mid-card and preliminary heels and trading wins and losses with Jack Donovan, Treach Phillips, and Terry Garvin. He returned to Central States in mid-June before going to Florida for the first time in September. He had several notable runs in Florida and Georgia over the following years. Seemingly destined for superstardom, he would be brought in to work big shows in major markets in the early 70s for Mid-Atlantic, NWA Hollywood, Big Time Wrestling (Shire), and even the WWWF (where he wrestled against Tim Woods once and Jack Brisco twice). Shane went back to Florida in February 1975 to work not only as a wrestler but also as booker and was said to have been viewed as a potential future World Heavyweight champion by many behind the scenes. Sadly, Shane died in the early morning hours of February 20th, 1975, when the plane being flown by fellow wrestler Buddy Colt crashed into the Tampa Bay. Colt and two others on the flight, Gary Hart and Mike McCord (Austin Idol), survived but suffered serious injuries.

DON SOTO – Don and his brother Roberto crisscrossed North America for a couple of decades, sometimes together and sometimes apart. When teaming up, Don was sometimes billed as Cyclone Soto and his brother would be Hurricane Soto. When they teamed in Mid-Atlantic, Don worked under a mask as El Rayo, though his brother was unmasked and billed as Roberto Soto.

DOUG GILBERT – Douglas Allen Lindzy turned pro in the late 50s, first wrestling as Doug Lindsay before taking on the Gilbert surname (no relation to the Tennessee-based Gilbert wrestling family). Doug was a member of several successful tag teams with various partners, including Curtis Smith (as the masked Super Infernos), Reggie Parks, Bobby Shane, and Dick Steinborn (he and Steinborn were billed as Mr. High and Mr. Low).

GENE DUNDEE – Gene Sanizzaro spent several years wrestling as Gene Dundee, mostly wrestling for Nick Gulas. For a few years, however, he was known as Flash Monroe, wrestling in Florida, Georgia, and Gulf Coast. As Flash, he would often team with Rocket Monroe (Maury High, the second Rocket).

IKE EAKINS – According to urban legend, Ike was brought in by promoter Leroy McGuirk to “get” Jack Donovan after McGuirk heard that Jack was going to start opposition to him. As the story goes, Ike and Jack knew each other prior to this, and Ike couldn’t bring himself to do it. Ike was born in Harlan, Kentucky and was a teenager during the Harlan County War labor conflicts of the 30s, so he had likely been exposed to violence and bloodshed long before becoming a pro wrestler.

JACK BRISCO – Jack was born Freddie Joe Brisco in 1941 in Seminole, Oklahoma, a town that had grown exponentially in population after the discovery of a high-producing oil well fifteen years earlier. His family moved to Blackwell, OK when he was a teenager. According to Jack, his younger brother Gerald was the first Brisco to get on a wrestling mat in school, taking up the sport in middle school after failing to make the basketball team. Jack, his elder by five years, took up wrestling soon thereafter. Jack went to Oklahoma State University, coming in second place in the 1964 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships as a junior in the 191 lb. weight class and winning it all in 1965 as a senior. This made him the first Native American to win an NCAA Wrestling championship. His teammate, Yojiro Uetake, came in first in the 130 lb. weight class in both 1964 and 1965 and won Olympic Gold medals in 1964 and 1968 in Freestyle wrestling as a bantamweight. Another teammate of Brisco’s, Bobby Douglas, also competed in Freestyle wrestling in the 1964 and 1968 Olympics. Douglas finished 4th in 1964 and won the Silver medal in 1968 as a featherweight. Brisco had been contacted a few weeks prior to the 1965 tournament by Leroy McGuirk, and Leroy formally offered to train him once wrestling season was over. Jack’s training consisted of working out with various wrestlers in the Cimarron Arena (actually a ballroom) in Tulsa the afternoons of the weekly Monday night matches there. Jack wrestled his first match at a live TV taping on May 15, 1965, in Oklahoma City against Ronnie Garvin. He wrestled on TV the following week against Treach Phillips before starting on the road the following week. And the rest, as they say, is history.

CHAMPIONS & KNOWN TITLE CHANGES

NOTE: Title histories are sometimes not “linear”; title changes can be acknowledged in one market but not others, or perhaps acknowledged in others at a later date. Also, the concept of titles being “held up” can sometimes refer to a town-specific angle to build to a rematch and may not be acknowledged in other markets. This represents my best effort to accurately portray title histories using the tools now available. While I do try to put these histories together on my own, I often refer to wrestling-titles.com and wrestlingdata.com

NWA WORLD JUNIOR HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE
Angelo Savoldi was the champion at the beginning of the quarter. Danny Hodge defeated Savoldi to win the title on April 23rd in Oklahoma City, OK. After defeating Savoldi in a series of rematches around the horn, Hodge left in mid-May to go to the Gulas territory.

MISSOURI JUNIOR HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE
This title had been vacated when Karol Krauser was injured the previous year. Hodge won a tournament in November to win it, but never defended the title and it wasn’t acknowledged again until a tournament was announced for April 3rd in Joplin. Red McKim won the tournament and the title, beating Treach Phillips in the finals.

ANATOMY OF A FEUD

Here’s a look at the feud between Joe McCarthy and Treach Phillips, looking at all the known matches between them with stipulations noted where available. The matches are arranged chronologically by city, so you can easily see which cities had multiple matches between them.

Keep in mind that some newspapers didn't list details, so just because a match isn't specified as a title match, we don't necessarily know for a fact that it was non-title and the same can apply for stipulation bouts.

This feud seems to have started with a television angle. In newspaper articles in several different towns building up their first singles match there, it mentions the two teamed up previously and came to blows, with the Wichita Falls newspaper saying Treach nailed his partner with “a right cross that put McCarthy out of business for two weeks with a badly damaged eye” (see picture below).

OKLAHOMA CITY
4/16 Treach beat McCarthy

TULSA
4/19 Treach drew McCarthy when “the match was stopped because of injury to both contestants received during the bloody milling” in the third fall
4/26 McCarthy beat Treach

LITTLE ROCK
4/20 Treach drew McCarthy when the match was stopped by the ringside physician after “neither could make it through” the third fall.

SPRINGFIELD
4/28 Treach beat McCarthy, winning the first and third falls. Treach won the first fall with an “abdominal squash”, McCarthy won the second fall with “his famous toe hold”, and Treach won the third fall “with a right elbow to the jaw.”
5/12 McCarthy puts up "Cherokee", his prized coon hunting dog (valued at $1000): McCarthy won the first fall in 30 seconds with a flying tackle, Phillips won the second fall, and then Phillips won the third fall with a “bomb buster.” According to the newspaper report, “McCarthy then gave Phillips the dog and immediately went to his knees and asked for the dog. This infuriated Phillips. He took the chain off the dog and hit McCarthy over the head, causing the decision to be reversed and the dog to return to its original owner.”
5/19 10 rounds boxing: Treach KO’d McCarthy in the 7th round after what was referred to as “unorthodox methods leading up to the winning punch.”

LAWTON
4/29 Treach vs McCarthy, results not available

MONROE
5/4 Treach beat McCarthy
5/18 Ring enclosed by steel fence: McCarthy beat Treach

FORT SMITH
5/5 Treach beat McCarthy, winning the first fall with “a big bounce” and the third fall with “a right cross to the chin.”

WICHITA FALLS
5/6 Treach wrestled McCarthy to a no decision, with the referee stopping it because “it got so rough and tumble.” Both men continued to fight after the match was stopped and also beat up promoter Bob Clay and “local wrester” Jim We[h]ba when they tried to stop them.
5/13 McCarthy's prized coon dog on the line: McCarthy beat Treach

SHREVEPORT
5/10 Treach beat McCarthy, winning the third fall “with a blow to the head.”
5/17 McCarthy puts up "Cherokee", his prized coon hunting dog, against an "equal property" of Phillips': McCarthy beat Treach, winning the third fall with a submission toe hold.
