McGuirk Wrestling Territory: Q4 1977

In the 4th quarter of 1977, Murdoch splits with Akbar, Doctor X cuts Pork Chop from his diet, a “wonderful” former football standout debuts, and more!

Here is the roster for the quarter. Wrestlers are listed in descending order by their average SPOT Rating during the quarter. Directly below their week-by-week SPOT Ratings is a list of their Frequent Partners and Frequent Opponents (if applicable):

NEW TO THE TERRITORY THIS QUARTER
(wrestlers either making their first-ever appearance as a regular in this territory or appearing in a significantly different role/gimmick than when they were here previously)

BOB MARCUS – Bob and his brother Joe are best-known for appearances in Toronto for Maple Leaf Wrestling in the late 70s and early 80s. He also had brief runs in Mid-Atlantic, Southwest, East Texas, and here.  After retiring from the ring, he owned an appliance repair business in Ontario named Tonic Appliance until his death in 2018.

KURT VON HESS – William Earl Terry began his wrestling career in in the late 60s as Bill Terry, primarily competing in the northeast and in Canada. He first started using the name Kurt Von Hess in 1970 for promoter Pedro Martinez. He teamed with Karl Von Shotz (John Anson) from 1972 to 1974, with Karl Von Stroheim (Walter Nurnberg) for Eddie Einhorn in 1976, and with Randy Colley (as a masked Assassin team) in 1979 & 1980. Kurt got a push here, including an NWA World Heavyweight title match with Harley Race in December in Shreveport (surprising, since he lost his match with Paul Orndorff in Shreveport the week before).

PAUL ORNDORFF – Paul began his career in Florida in the summer of 1976 before going to Georgia in the fall. He went back to Florida at the beginning of 1977 and then to Memphis in the spring. He got his first push working for Jarrett, winning the Southern title from Jerry Lawler and holding it for a couple of months. He came here in late November and started out in prelims but slowly moved up the cards as the year ended.

PHIL MERCADO – Phil got his start in Amarillo in 1976, also making brief stops in Florida, Mid-Atlantic, and for Nick Gulas before coming here in November. He would later use the ring name El Mongol over the course of his 6-year wrestling career.

STEVEN LITTLE BEAR – Vince Bryant wrestled throughout the 60s mostly using the ring name Steve Kovacs. He first started using Steven Little Bear in 1970 in Vancouver but would continue to use the Kovacs name in some territories. In 1977 he competed in Mid-Atlantic as Kovacs for a few months and then went to Georgia as Little Bear in August before coming here in late November. He had several tag team title reigns with partners such as Don Leon Jonathan, Dean Higuchi (Dean Ho), Dutch Savage, and Ray Candy among others.

SWEDE HANSON – After about twenty years as a professional wrestler, Robert Fort Hanson made his first appearances in the McGuirk territory in the fall, not long after sound-alike Stan Hansen left the territory. Swede is best-known as the tag team partner of Rip Hawk. As the Blonde Bombers, the two were a regular team for over a decade mostly in Mid-Atlantic. After high school, Swede worked as an aircraft mechanic and compiled a 61-3 record as an amateur boxer before Willie Gilzenberg convinced him to turn to professional wrestling.

THUNDERBOLT PATTERSON – Claude “Thunderbolt” Patterson had been wrestling since 1964, appearing for numerous territories over the years. In 1973 he started working for Ann Gunkel’s All-South promotion not long after she broke away from the established Georgia office. It appears Thunderbolt had a falling out with Gunkel in June of 1974, and he and Reverend Hosea Williams formed the International Wrestling League (an “outlaw” to Gunkel’s “outlaw” promotion!) in September along with ex-football player Jim Wilson. That alliance didn’t last long, as less than a year later Wilson sued Williams (along with Fulton County Commissioner J.O. Wyatt, the Omni and promoter Quinton Perry) for $3.5 million. Thunderbolt continues to make appearances at various conventions and wrestling-related ceremonies, appearing at both the Tragos-Thesz Hall of Fame induction ceremony and the Cauliflower Alley Club convention/reunion (where he received an award) in 2021.

CHAMPIONS & KNOWN TITLE CHANGES

NOTE: Title histories are sometimes not “linear”; title changes can be acknowledged in one market but not others, or perhaps acknowledged in others at a later date. Also, the concept of titles being “held up” can sometimes refer to a town-specific angle to build to a rematch and may not be acknowledged in other markets. This represents my best effort to accurately portray title histories using the tools now available. While I do try to put these histories together on my own, I often refer to wrestling-titles.com and wrestlingdata.com

NORTH AMERICAN TITLE
Jerry Oates was the champ at the beginning of the quarter. Dick Murdoch beat Oates to win the title on 11/6 in Oklahoma City. By the end of the quarter, Murdoch turned back babyface after just a few months, feuding with Scandor Akbar and Akbar’s new charge, Doctor X.

U.S. TAG TEAM TITLES
The Medics were the champs at the beginning of the quarter. Doctor X & Pork Chop Cash won the titles on 9/27 in Shreveport, then split up shortly thereafter via a TV angle. On 10/11 in Shreveport, Cash beat X by disqualification (when Scandor Akbar, who was acting as X’s manager, interfered) in a singles match with the winner getting possession of the titles. The following week in Shreveport, X teamed with Ciclon Negro to face Cash and Ray Candy. While that match was billed as being for the titles, it is unclear if the titles would go to the team that won or that either X or Cash would lay claim to both belts by winning. Other towns saw singles bouts between X and Cash to determine which former partner would get the titles. It appears X got possession of the titles, and for the rest of the quarter title matches are billed featuring X teaming with Swede Hanson some of the time and Scandor Akbar other times.

ANATOMY OF A FEUD

Here’s a look at the feud between Ray Candy and The Assassin, looking at all the known matches between them with stipulations noted where available. The matches are arranged chronologically by city, so you can easily see which cities had multiple matches between them.

Keep in mind that some newspapers didn't list details, so just because a match isn't specified as a title match, we don't necessarily know for a fact that it was non-title and the same can apply for stipulation bouts.

Candy and the Assassin (Jody Hamilton) had feuded in two previous territories, first for Ann Gunkel when Candy was a rookie in 1973 and then again in Florida in 1976. In many cities, they built to a head-butt contest, a "money vs mask” match, and/or a lumberjack match.

ALEXANDRIA
8/23 Candy beat Assassin
9/20 Candy beat Assassin
9/27 Candy beat Assassin
10/4 Candy “won a head-butt contest with the Masked Assassin but lost the regular match with him”

BATON ROUGE

9/7 Candy beat Assassin; the finish came after Assassin “had turned his back to confer with the referee when Candy forearmed him. The masked wrestler’s head struck a steel ring post and he was an easy pin”

9/21 $2,000 Head Butting contest: Results not available
11/16 $1,000 vs mask: Results not available
11/23 Lumberjack match: Assassin beat Candy; during the match, Ray was “thrown out of the ring and worked over by [Doug] Sommers before being tossed back in the ring, where he was easy prey for a pin”

MONROE
9/5 Candy beat Assassin; according to the newspaper report, “there was a general free-for-all afterwards”
9/12 Assassin beat Candy by disqualification after Candy “tired of the Assassin’s tactics and attacked the masked man with his cane”
9/19 $2,000 Head Butting contest: Assassin beat Candy after “apparently slipping a foreign object into his mask while the referee’s attention was diverted”. After the match, Candy unmasked the Assassin “during a wild melee” but covered his head with a towel before fans could see anything but “a healthy shock of black hair”.
11/28 Assassin beat Candy; Candy came back to win a battle royal
