The McGuirk/Watts Wrestling Almanac - Chapter 24 (Q3 1965)
Welcome to Chapter 24 of The McGuirk/Watts Wrestling Almanac, an in-depth data-driven look at the wrestling territory run by Leroy McGuirk (and later, Bill Watts). The territory is most commonly known as Tri-State Wrestling and/or Mid-South Wrestling, though neither of those names were actually used until September 1979 when Watts split from McGuirk.
Each chapter covers a three-month period of time and will list our exclusive statistics:1) SPOT (Statistical Position Over Time) Ratings, which measure a wrestlers average position on the cards
2) Frequent Partners & Frequent Opponents, which let you see who a wrestler was teaming up with on a regular basis (if any) and who they were regularly wrestling against in meaningful matches high up on the cards
In addition, we list the advertised lineups for all known house shows in the territory during the time period, an index of newcomers and other wrestlers (special attractions, women, midgets, etc) that passed through the territory, and a match-by-match, town-by-town recap of at least one feud during the quarter.

NEW TO THE TERRITORY THIS QUARTER
(wrestlers either making their first-ever appearance as a regular in this territory, their first appearance since Sep 1959, or appearing in a significantly different role/gimmick than when they were here previously)
ARGENTINA ZUMA – Zuma’s last previous confirmed appearances here were in May of 1959. Zuma (real name Manuel Chaij) was a Jack Pfefer creation. Depending on where he was, he used the name Argentina Zuma, Amazing Zuma, and/or Mighty Zuma. Pfefer arranged for Zuma to feud with Argentina Rocca; the two had three matches in Madison Square Garden with the first two drawing over 21,000 fans each. His career record has a large gap between April 1960 and July 1965. Zuma left the U.S. in 1960 following the passing of his mother; less than a month later, one of his brothers passed away as well. Zuma spent the next 5 years retired from wrestling, getting married in 1961 and starting a family. His appearances for McGuirk in this quarter marked his return to wrestling.
GUY TAYLOR – Guy generally worked as a preliminary wrestler from 1962 to 1965, working in Gulf Coast, Capitol Sports, Florida, Georgia, the AWA, Heart of America, Gulas, Arizona, and here. From 1966 to 1968 he made sporadic appearances for the AWA, often at television tapings. After a match on March 23, 1968, Taylor had a heart attack and passed away at the age of 29.

MISSOURI JUNIOR HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE
Don Kent beat Red McKim to win the title on September 25th in Joplin, MO. This was the only known defense of the title during the quarter.
NWA WORLD JUNIOR HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE
Danny Hodge continued to hold the NWA World Junior Heavyweight title throughout the quarter, though he didn’t defend it much while working for Verne Gagne and Joe Dusek.

ANATOMY OF A FEUD
Here’s a look at the feud between Don Kent and Mike Clancy, looking at all the known matches between them with stipulations noted where available. The matches are arranged chronologically by city, so you can easily see which cities had multiple matches between them.
Keep in mind that some newspapers didn't list details, so just because a match isn't specified as a title match, we don't necessarily know for a fact that it was non-title and the same can apply for stipulation bouts.
In some towns, the first singles match was set-up by a tag team match the previous week. The feud built to Texas Rules (aka Texas death) matches and boxing matches in Little Rock and Tulsa. They also had steel cage matches in Oklahoma City and Tulsa.
LITTLE ROCK
8/24 Kent beat Clancy “in a blood-spattered battle”
9/7 Texas rules: Kent beat Clancy when Mike was “out cold on the Auditorium floor” and unable to answer the bell for the ninth fall
9/14 10 rounds boxing: Clancy beat Kent by disqualification; during the match, Kent’s second (Ike Eakins) slipped Kent’s glove off and he “slug[ged] Clancy with a bare fist” and Clancy was counted out. The newspaper report said “fans howled their disagreement and after a shoving match Referee Leo Voss disqualified Kent”
WICHITA FALLS
8/19 Results not available. This match was set up the previous week when Kent attacked Clancy after a tag team bout
9/23 Kent to toss 50 $1 bills to the crowd if he loses: Results not available. An article promoting the following week’s card said that Clancy and Jerry Kozak threw Kent’s cash to the crowd, but the actual result of the bout was not stated
