In the 4th quarter of 1973, Akbar turns heel on Hodge, two ‘fake’ brother teams (one of whom is managed by their "Maw") and one masked team consisting of actual brothers-in-law, a rookie named Backlund & more!

BLACKJACK SLADE – Complete records for Slade are unavailable, but his most active years are believed to be between 1972 and 1974. In that period, he wrestled for numerous U.S. territories, mostly in the southeast, and had a brief stint in Australia plus one tour for All Japan.
BOB BACKLUND – These are believed to be the earliest matches in the pro career of Bob. He was trained by Eddie Sharkey in Minneapolis. Backlund both wrestled and played football as a freshman at Waldorf College in Forest City, Iowa, but focused on wrestling for the following three years, first at Waldorf and then after transferring to North Dakota State University. Bob won the Division II NCAA championships at 190 lbs. as a junior and finished in fifth place as a heavyweight in his senior year. He can also name every U.S. president in chronological order, so he's got that going for him, which is nice.
DAN KROFFAT – Not to be confused with Phil Lafon/Lafleur, the “first” Dan Kroffat wrestled full-time from 1969 through the mid-70s. He primarily competed in Stampede and is credited with inventing the ladder match, the first of which took place in either late September or early October 1972 between Kroffat and Tor Kamata.
DANTE & MEPHISTO – Joe Turner had been wrestling in Mid-Atlantic, forming a team with his half-brother Bill Bowman while his brother-in-law Dennis Condrey was also in Mid-Atlantic wrestling in the prelims. When all three left the Carolinas, Bill went to wrestle for Ann Gunkel while Joe and Dennis came here as the masked team of Dante & Mephisto. Condrey, just 21 at the time, would gain valuable tag team experience while teaming up with his brother-in-law, which would serve him well later in his career where he formed wildly successful teams with Phil Hickerson, Randy Rose, and of course Bobby Eaton.
DONNIE & RONNIE BASS – While Don Bass is best known for his various runs in Jerry Jarrett’s territory under several different gimmicks and Ron Bass is best known for his runs in Florida and Mid-Atlantic, the two formed a “brother” tag team early in their careers. They teamed up not only here but also for Nick Gulas, Gulf Coast, and Florida between ’73 and ’75. They were managed here by "Maw Bass", who was female wrestler Mae Weston.
RANDY TYLER – When Rip Tyler returned to the territory at the beginning of the quarter, his “brother” Randy (no actual relation) soon followed. Randy (real name Monroe Alton Rice Jr.) had been wrestling for a few years by this point in time. Both Randy & Rip had been part of a group of wrestlers from Gulf Coast who moved to Washington state to wrestle for Dean Silverstone’s new Superstar Championship Wrestling promotion in September, but the two of them left after just a few weeks and came here.

CHAMPIONS & KNOWN TITLE CHANGES
NOTE: Title histories are sometimes not “linear”; title changes can be acknowledged in one market but not others, or perhaps acknowledged in others at a later date. NORTH AMERICAN TITLE
A tournament had been underway to crown a new champion, with the title having been declared vacant shortly after Bill Watts left the territory early in the year. According to an article in the Shreveport newspaper promoting the October 15th card, Tank Morgan won the title in “a recent television victory” which may have been the ‘finals’ of the tournament, but no further details are available.
NWA WORLD JUNIOR HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE
Danny Hodge was the champion at the beginning of the quarter. He lost the title to Ken Mantell on December 19th in Jackson, Mississippi.
US TAG TEAM TITLES
Alex Perez & El Gran Tapia were the champions at the beginning of the quarter. Kim Duk & Stan Kowalski defeated them to win the titles on October 4th in Greenwood, Mississippi.

ANATOMY OF A FEUD
Here’s a look at the feud between Danny Hodge and Scandor Akbar, looking at all the known matches between them with stipulations noted where available. The matches are arranged chronologically by city, so you can easily see which cities had multiple matches between them.
Keep in mind that some newspapers didn't list details, so just because a match isn't specified as a title match, we don't necessarily know for a fact that it was non-title and the same can apply for stipulation bouts.
This feud was set up by a television angle where the two, who had been tag team partners on and off dating back to 1966, had a miscommunication during a match and Hodge accidentally hit Akbar. The Wichita Falls newspaper stated that “Akbar seemed to lose complete control of his temper and went to work stomping and hammering Danny until the champion was out cold.” As the feud progressed in different towns, the finish of the ‘last’ match between them seems to shift from Hodge winning to Akbar winning for the most part. This is likely related to Hodge finishing up his run here in mid-December. He took a couple of weeks off over the holidays and then started in Florida in January. He wouldn’t return here as a regular for over a year.

Here is the calendar of known house shows for the quarter. At the beginning of the quarter, local promoter Leonard Clay switched his allegiance to Ann Gunkel’s All-South Wrestling Alliance. All-South cards were held in Pine Bluff and Hot Springs, Arkansas, Wichita Falls, Marshall, and Tyler, Texas, and Joplin, Missouri for 2-3 weeks. A card scheduled for 10/18 in Wichita Falls was cancelled, and it was noted that Clay was “switching back to the NWA … because of fan demand.” The following week, Leonard’s towns were back to using talent from the McGuirk booking office.
