The McGuirk/Watts Wrestling Almanac - Chapter 25 (Q4 1965)

Welcome to Chapter 25 of The McGuirk/Watts Wrestling Almanac, an in-depth data-driven look at the wrestling territory run by Leroy McGuirk (and later, Bill Watts). The territory is most commonly known as Tri-State Wrestling and/or Mid-South Wrestling, though neither of those names were actually used until September 1979 when Watts split from McGuirk.

Each chapter covers a three-month period of time and will list our exclusive statistics:
1) SPOT (Statistical Position Over Time) Ratings, which measure a wrestlers average position on the cards
2) Frequent Partners & Frequent Opponents, which let you see who a wrestler was teaming up with on a regular basis (if any) and who they were regularly wrestling against in meaningful matches high up on the cards
In addition, we list the advertised lineups for all known house shows in the territory during the time period, an index of newcomers and other wrestlers (special attractions, women, midgets, etc) that passed through the territory, and a match-by-match, town-by-town recap of at least one feud during the quarter.

THE McGUIRK/WATTS WRESTLING ALMANAC
CHAPTER 25 (Q4 1965)

Here is the roster for the quarter. Wrestlers are listed in descending order by their average SPOT Rating during the quarter. Directly below their week-by-week SPOT Ratings is a list of their Frequent Partners and Frequent Opponents (if applicable):

NEW TO THE TERRITORY THIS QUARTER
(wrestlers either making their first-ever appearance as a regular in this territory, their first appearance since Sep 1959, or appearing in a significantly different role/gimmick than when they were here previously)

BLACK PANTHER – This masked wrestler competed on a part-time basis, occasionally teaming up with Great Bolo (Al Lovelock). He is believed to be Jerry Usher. Usher is probably best known as being a referee in later years, but he did wrestle on-and-off from 1965 to 1975.

EL MEDICO – Another masked wrestler appeared in the territory during the quarter, billed as El Medico. Before he finished up his run here in early 1966, he was unmasked in at least one town and revealed to be Indio Pampero. He had a previous run here (as Indio Pampero) in early 1964. His real name was Alberto Antonio Amessa, and he used several ring names over the course of his career, including Indio Joe, Pedro Amessa, Tony Lazzari, El Furioso, and Tony Romano.

RETURNING TO THE TERRITORY THIS QUARTER

Bill Watts, Chuck Karbo, Danny Hodge, Don Fargo, Great Bolo, Jim Fargo (Jim Baugus/Dalton), Kurt Steiger, Lorenzo Parente, and Sputnik Monroe

OTHER WRESTLERS NOT LISTED IN THE SPOT RATINGS

NATIONALLY KNOWN STARS

PART-TIMERS OR JUST PASSING THROUGH

Their average SPOT Rating here was a .33

MALE MIDGET WRESTLERS
Chico Santana, Dandy Varon, Little Boy Blue, and Pee Wee Lopez

CHAMPIONS & KNOWN TITLE CHANGES

NOTE: Title histories are sometimes not “linear”; title changes can be acknowledged in one market but not others, or perhaps acknowledged in others at a later date. Also, the concept of titles being “held up” can sometimes refer to a town-specific angle to build to a rematch and may not be acknowledged in other markets. This represents my best effort to accurately portray title histories using the tools now available. While I do try to put these histories together on my own, I often refer to wrestling-titles.com and wrestlingdata.com

NWA WORLD JUNIOR HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE
Danny Hodge returned to the territory on a full-time basis in November, bringing the title back to the area. Some title history sources list Lorenzo Parente as having won the title from Hodge on November 23, 1965, in Little Rock. My thorough research of newspaper clippings throughout the territory raises some serious questions about the validity of this title change. For more information, read my blog post Q: When is a title change NOT a title change? A: When it's a title change. (Unless it isn't)

US TAG TEAM TITLES
After not having a tag team title recognized in the territory for about a year, Don Fargo & Jim Dalton come to the area billed as the US Tag Team champions at the beginning of the quarter. Initially, they were advertised as Jack & Jim Dalton in newspaper ads, but after a week they changed their ring names to Don & Jim Fargo. Fans didn’t have much time to get used to the new names though; Don & Jim left the territory (apparently taking the titles with them) after less than four weeks because, according to Don, “promoters (and some of the wresters) didn’t like their antics”. These antics included nailing the midget wrestlers’ clothes and shoes to the ceiling while the midgets were in the ring.

MISSOURI JUNIOR HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE
Don Kent was the champion at the beginning of the quarter. On October 16th, Jack Brisco defeated him to apparently win the title in Joplin, Missouri. The following week, however, it was stated that the NWA declared the title vacant until a rematch could be booked between the two. This was the result of Kent lodging a protest after the loss, claiming that Brisco had won illegally. The rematch was held on November 13th and was won by Brisco.

ANATOMY OF A FEUD

Here’s a look at the feud between “Bulldog” Don Kent and Antone “Ripper” Leone, looking at all the known matches between them with stipulations noted where available. The matches are arranged chronologically by city, so you can easily see which cities had multiple matches between them.

Keep in mind that some newspapers didn't list details, so just because a match isn't specified as a title match, we don't necessarily know for a fact that it was non-title and the same can apply for stipulation bouts.

Kent & Leone had been a semi-regular tag team over the summer, but their partnership came to an end when “Bulldog Don bashed the Ripper on the head with a chair” in a TV angle. It is worth noting that Kent (the heel in this feud) won most of their matches; I have speculated previously that Kent was either the booker or at least had some “stroke” during this run for McGuirk. The fact that he won 9 of the 11 matches we have results for (there is one match where no results are available) is probably evidence to support that theory.

OKLAHOMA CITY
9/10 Kent beat Leone
9/17 “Nothing barred – no referee”: Kent beat Leone
9/24 Brass Knucks rules: Kent beat Leone
10/29 Kent beat Leone

TULSA
9/20 Kent beat Leone
9/27 Nothing barred – no referee: Kent beat Leone

LITTLE ROCK
9/21 Kent beat Leone; Kent won the first fall with “stomps and a press”, Leone won the second fall with “slams”, and Kent won the third fall after using “what fans claimed to be brass knuckles”
9/28 No rules, no referee: Kent beat Leone; Kent won the first fall in 9 minutes, Leone won the second fall in 5 minutes, and Kent won the third fall in 5 minutes

SPRINGFIELD
10/6 Kent beat Leone; Kent won the first fall in 9 minutes with “a right cross to the jaw”, Leone won the second fall in 15 minutes with “abdominal stomps”, and Kent won the third fall in 6 minutes with “body slams”
10/13 Nothing barred – no referee: Leone beat Kent; Kent won the first fall in 3 minutes, Leone won the second fall in 10 minutes, and Leone won the third fall in 11 minutes

WICHITA FALLS
10/14 Leone and Kent were both disqualified “for violation of rules and failure to break outside the ring”; in a newspaper article ahead of the match, Leone was quoted as saying “I’ve had it with Kent, he’s going to the hospital … He wants dirt, I’ll show the punk dirt.”
10/21 No referee: results not available
