In the 1st quarter of 1974, Ken Mantell supplants the departed Danny Hodge as the top babyface star, Rip Tyler climbs the theoretical ladder, Kroffat and Sweetan try and climb a literal ladder, & more!

NEW TO THE TERRITORY THIS QUARTER
(wrestlers either making their first-ever appearance as a regular in this territory, their first appearance since Sep 1959, or appearing in a significantly different role/gimmick than when they were here previously)
AFA & SIKA – Two of thirteen children born to Amituana and Tovale Anoa’i, the family moved from Samoa to San Francisco in 1959. Shortly afterwards, Afa joined the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps (a Navy-sponsored organization for teenagers), and Sika joined the U.S. Merchant Marines. Afa was the first to turn pro, initially trained by Rocky Johnson and Peter Maivia and having his earliest matches in the fall of 1971 in Arizona. A few months later, Sika joined him and the two spent several years barnstorming their way through various territories in the U.S. and Canada. Were billed as the Samoans in some places and the Islanders in others during the 70s.
ARMAN HUSSIAN – It is almost shocking how little in the way of hard facts are known about this man outside of his wrestling career. He travelled all over North America in the 60s and 70s, but probably spent more time in Gulf Coast than anywhere else. Some people recall him being billed as a graduate of Oxford University and speaking with a British accent. And some wrestlers say he would use the accent backstage as well, surprising since it is generally believed he was born and raised in Texas and dropped out of high school. He was Muslim in real life, and while there is some discrepancy as to his birth name (either Mike Barber or Mike Harmon), he legally changed his name to Arman Hussian as an adult. He was said to love jazz music, and whenever he drove a carload of “the boys” to wherever they were wrestling that night, jazz would blare from the car speakers. One source says he was one of the founders of the Mississippi Delta Blues Festival, founded in 1978.
BILL CODY – Real name Orest Antonation, Cody spent most of his career in Canada. He had teamed frequently with Dan Kroffat in Stampede, so it’s no surprise that in his brief four-week stay here he teamed with Dan on a few occasions. Bill had two brothers who wrestled in Manitoba in the 1960s. In addition to 2 runs as International Tag Team champions in Stampede with Kroffat, Cody also held tag team titles with Lorne Corlett (a young Karl Von Steiger) and Salvatore Martino (Salvatore Bellomo).
BUCK ROBLEY – Buck had previously been here for a couple of “blink and you’ll miss it” runs, but this was his first stint as a full-timer. He would of course become a mainstay of the territory through much of the rest of the 70s and in the 80s with Mid-South. His earliest documented matches were in the summer of 1968, first for Gulf Coast and then for Florida. When he worked as a heel the fans would call him “yellow belly”, which led to him wearing a shirt that said “Don’t Call Me Yellow’. According to Percival A. Friend, that began when a referee in Amarillo pointed out that Buck had spilled mustard onto his stomach and then got the fans to chant “yellow belly Robley”.
CHIEF WHITE CLOUD – After spending the first few years of his career wrestling as Pedro Columbo (including a few months here in 1971), Chief White Cloud spent about a decade wrestling under that name, sometimes billed as Billy White Cloud.
JOHN BLACK – Black sometimes used the name Black Bart, many years before the 80s and early 90s wrestler with that ring name (Rick Harris). John wrestled for a few years in the early 70s, including stints in Florida, Amarillo, and for Ann Gunkel’s All-South promotion. This run for McGuirk may have been the last matches of his brief career.
PIERRE MARTIN – Perhaps better known in the U.S. as Frenchy Martin, he was born Jean Gagne in Quebec City in 1947. In Stampede he was known as Don Gagne, while in Puerto Rico he was billed as Pierre Martel, the storyline brother of Michel Martel (Rick Martel’s real-life brother). As the Mercenaries in Puerto Rico, they were one of the hottest heel teams the island had ever seen.
SUNG YUNG KANG – Wrestled in Japan for the IWE for a couple of years before coming here in March. The six months spent in this territory may have been his only North American appearances. In the spring, Kang would begin to team with Mr. Ito (Umanosuke Ueda).
TONY RUSSO – Born Jose Patrico Ficca Gomez, Russo used several ring names during his career. In addition to wrestling as Tony Russo, he worked as George Gouliovas and under several masked gimmicks. While he spent most of his career in the lower portion of the cards, he did hold titles in Alabama and Australia.

NWA WORLD JUNIOR HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE
Ken Mantell held onto the title for the entire quarter.
NORTH AMERICAN TITLE
Rip Tyler beat Tank Morgan on February 4th in Shreveport to win the North American title. Both men were heels, and Tyler had been slotted lower on the cards up to that point in time since returning to the territory in late 1973. In what I’m sure is completely unrelated news, Rip Tyler became Leroy’s booker somewhere around this time.
U.S. TAG TEAM TITLES
Klondike Bill & Luke Brown beat Kim Duk & Stan Kowalski to win the U.S. Tag Team titles on February 4th in Shreveport. Bob Sweetan & Siegfried Stanke won the titles at some point towards the end of the quarter. If it did happen on a singular house show, the most likely candidate is March 28th in Wichita Falls.
BRASS KNUCKS TITLE/TROPHY
While this title was not defended at all during the quarter, Bob Sweetan was considered the champion of record at the time.

ANATOMY OF A FEUD
Here’s a look at the feud between Bob Sweetan and Dan Kroffat, looking at all the known matches between them with stipulations noted where available. The matches are arranged chronologically by city, so you can easily see which cities had multiple matches between them.
Keep in mind that some newspapers didn't list details, so just because a match isn't specified as a title match, we don't necessarily know for a fact that it was non-title and the same can apply for stipulation bouts.
While wrestling in Stampede, Dan Kroffat came up with the idea for a novel new stipulation match while he was feuding with Tor Kamata. In September 1972, Kroffat faced off with Kamata in what is believed to be the first-ever ladder match. In this case a bag of money was tied above the ring, and the first man to climb the ladder and retrieve it would get to keep the cash. The match was so successful that the two brought it around to other towns in the territory in the weeks that followed.
Fast-forward a little over a year later, and Kroffat is wrestling for Leroy McGuirk. Based on our SPOT Rating metric, it seems he wasn’t getting all that much of a push. It’s possible he suggested doing the ladder matches as a way of him getting higher-profile matches (which generally resulted in higher payoffs!) while he was finishing up his run here. And so, what are believed to be the first-ever ladder matches in the United States took place between Kroffat and Bob Sweetan in the winter months of 1974.
