The McGuirk/Watts Wrestling Almanac - Chapter 26 (1966 Q1)
Welcome to Chapter 26 of The McGuirk/Watts Wrestling Almanac, an in-depth data-driven look at the wrestling territory run by Leroy McGuirk (and later, Bill Watts).
Each chapter covers a three-month period of time and will list our exclusive statistics:
1) Rankings. A look at the top acts in the territory during the quarter based on their average position on the cards and how many weeks they were here
2) SPOT (Statistical Position Over Time) Ratings, which measure a wrestlers average position on the cards
3) The top feuds based on FLW (Feud Length in Weeks) Score, which takes into account how many times a specific matchup occurs and where on the card those matches take place, scaled to represent an approximate length of time that the feud lasted in the territory
In addition, we list the advertised lineups for all known house shows in the territory during the time period, an index of newcomers and other wrestlers (special attractions, women, midgets, etc) that passed through the territory, and a match-by-match, town-by-town recap of at least one feud during the quarter.

NEW TO THE TERRITORY THIS QUARTER
(wrestlers either making their first-ever appearance as a regular in this territory, their first appearance since Sep 1959, or appearing in a significantly different role/gimmick than when they were here previously)
THE ASSASSINS – Jody Hamilton and Tom Renesto had both been here before separately (and unmasked). Hamilton had two brief runs in 1960 and 1961 while Renesto spent almost six months here in the mid-‘50s as Tony Martini. The two first teamed up and donned the masks in late 1961 in Georgia. And the rest, as they say, is history.
BOBBY CHRISTY – Bobby and his brother Jerry were the nephews of wrestlers Ted & Vic Christy. Bobby & Jerry teamed up in numerous territories, sometimes as the Peace Brothers (Brother Joseph and Brother Jerome) and sometimes as a masked team billed as the Vigilantes. That’s quite the dichotomy, alternating between peace and vigilantism.
BORIS MANAGOFF – Aside from the few months spent here, there seem to be no other records of a “Boris Managoff” wrestling anywhere else at any time. This was not Bobby Managoff, as he was wrestling in the upper Midwest in the first few months of 1966.
BOZO BROWN – This is believed to have been “Spaceman” Frank Hickey. Hickey of course is legendary, having once defeated Buddy Rogers to win (Jack Pfefer’s version of) the World Heavyweight title. How many men can say they’ve stood toe-to-toe with wrestlers Bruno Sammartino, Bobo Brazil, the Crusher, Ernie Ladd, Antonio “Argentina” Rocca, Nick Bockwinkel, and the Sheik? Well, probably lots of men. But how many SPACEMEN can say that? Just one. And his name was Frank Hickey.
BRUCE KIRK – Kirk spent much of the 1960s wrestling in various territories primarily in the western half of the U.S. and Canada. In 1971 he changed his ring name to Frank Monte and teamed up with Mike York as the Alaskans in Gulf Coast, Mid-Atlantic, Florida, East Texas, and for Gulas.
THE KENTUCKIANS – Both Tiny Smith (Grizzly Smith) and Big Boy Brown (Luke Brown) had been here previously. In fact, on a couple of occasions they were teamed up. But this was their first time here as a full-fledged tag team, a partnership that began in May 1962 in Mid-Atlantic.
RAY GORDON – Real name Dick Hrstich, Ray began his career in New Zealand in the 1950s before coming to North America. He wrestled in numerous territories over the years and notably had several runs in Central States. Ray is credited along with Bobby Graham and “Killer” Buddy Austin as having trained Harley Race.

CHAMPIONS & KNOWN TITLE CHANGES
NOTE: Title histories are sometimes not “linear”; title changes can be acknowledged in one market but not others, or perhaps acknowledged in others at a later date. Also, the concept of titles being “held up” can sometimes refer to a town-specific angle to build to a rematch and may not be acknowledged in other markets. This represents my best effort to accurately portray title histories using the tools now available. While I do try to put these histories together on my own, I often refer to wrestling-titles.com and wrestlingdata.com
NWA WORLD JUNIOR HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE
This one is a little tricky. First, recall that in the 4th quarter of 1965 there *might* have been a title change that applied only in Little Rock, where Lorenzo Parente may have defeated Danny Hodge to win the title in November, with Hodge regaining it in December. There is conflicting information as to whether Parente actually “won” the title or if it was held up (read this post for more details: http://www.chartingtheterritories.com/2021/01/q-when-is-title-change-not-title-change.html)
This brings us to January 1966. On January 7th in Oklahoma City, Hodge defended the title against Parente. Results in the newspaper the following day state that “Lorenzo Parente defeated Danny Hodge … to claim the junior heavyweight championship.” They were booked for a rematch a week later with the title once again at stake, with a newspaper article in advance of the event stating that Parente was “declared the winner last Friday.” It should be noted that during the week, Hodge was still being acknowledged as champion in other cities in the territory.
Either late Thursday evening (January 13th) or early Friday morning, Hodge was involved in an automobile accident after wrestling in Wichita Falls, Texas. He was released from the hospital early enough on Friday to make the Oklahoma City show that night. During the match, he “collapsed” and “was unable to continue”, and Parente was once again “declared the winner”. On Sunday, January 16th, an article in the Wichita Falls newspaper acknowledged Hodge’s accident yet still claimed he was the champion, as the article specifically states that Parente was taking “another giant step toward a junior world championship bout” by facing Jerry Kozak later in the week. However, the same newspaper two days later ran an article claiming Parente had indeed “won” the title “last week in Oklahoma City” when Hodge was unable to continue.
So, now we have a situation where Hodge *may* have lost the title on January 7th, but the change was not acknowledged in the rest of the territory. Then on the 14th, Hodge “collapsed” during his match. It is not known if Hodge collapsing was a legitimate after-effect or just a creative touch added in the wake of Hodge’s very real automobile accident less than 24 hours earlier. And whatever happened during that match, there seems to be some confusion as to who came out of it as champion, at least until Tuesday the 18th, by which point it seems Parente was being acknowledged as champ throughout the territory.
Here’s my two cents: I think that they were trying to run a similar scenario in Oklahoma City as to what had been done previously in Little Rock, with a title controversy between Hodge and Parente setting up rematches with Hodge eventually coming out on top. But Hodge’s injuries legitimately required him to take time off and the promotion “ret-conned” the situation and acknowledged Parente as having won the title on the 14th.
Furthermore, Hodge wrestled on January 15th, 17th, and 18th. On the 15th in Joplin, he wrestled a tag team match and a one-fall preliminary bout. On the 17th in Shreveport, he was disqualified in what was billed as a title match against Kurt Steiger, with the newspaper article the day after the show explicitly mentioning the title (with them stating that since Hodge lost by disqualification, he retained the championship). On the 18th in Monroe, Hodge defended the title against Red McKim. It appears they did a similar finish here as they did on OKC on the 14th, with Hodge being “unable to continue”. This time, however, fellow babyface McKim “declined to claim the title offered him” after the match was stopped. Hodge’s automobile accident was definitely part of the storyline here. After the 18th, Hodge was out of McGuirk rings for two months before returning in mid-March. It appears Hodge did wrestle for the AWA on a few occasions during his “recovery”, including two matches in mid-February.
So given all that information, it’s hard to know what was *supposed* to happen with the NWA World Junior Heavyweight title. It sure seems that they were creating title controversies to build rematches in Oklahoma City AND Shreveport and Monroe, and the latter two may have been borne out of Hodge’s legitimate auto accident. But at some point, the lines between real and storyline were blurred, and Hodge seems to have needed some time off to recuperate, at which point they decided to acknowledge Parente as having won the title in Oklahoma City on January 14th. Although he also won it on January 7th in the same town. Maybe.
On February 11th, Joe McCarthy defeated Parente in Oklahoma City to win the title. Not only was this change acknowledged throughout the territory, it was acknowledged right away. The very next night in Joplin, Parente had been advertised as defending the title against Jerry Kozak while McCarthy was booked in an earlier match against Argentina Zuma. McCarthy was announced as the new champion and he and Parente flip-flopped spots on the card, with Lorenzo facing Zuma and McCarthy successfully defending his newly-won title against Kozak.
US TAG TEAM TITLES
There were no tag team champions recognized in the territory during the quarter. The last team to have been billed as champs, Don & Jim Fargo, left abruptly in the fall of 1966.
MISSOURI JUNIOR HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE
Jack Brisco was the champion at the beginning of the quarter. On January 15th, Lorenzo Parente defeated Brisco in Joplin, Missouri to win the title. There were no advertised defenses of the title the remainder of the quarter.

ANATOMY OF A FEUD
Here’s a look at the feud between The Assassins and The Kentuckians, looking at all the known matches between them with stipulations noted where available. The matches are arranged chronologically by city, so you can easily see which cities had multiple matches between them.
Keep in mind that some newspapers didn't list details, so just because a match isn't specified as a title match, we don't necessarily know for a fact that it was non-title and the same can apply for stipulation bouts.
These two teams had feuded before in three different territories: Florida, Mid-Atlantic, and Southern California. Additionally, they had a few matches against one another in Georgia. Keeping in mind the old adage “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”, they brought their feud here not long after both teams arrived. After a few weeks of matches, Big Boy Brown did an injury angle (which was repeated in every town); in reality, he left the area and went to wrestle for Verne Gagne and the Duseks.

SPRINGFIELD
2/23 The Kentuckians beat the Assassins by countout. Smith won the first fall in 12 minutes with “an upside-down bear hug for a pin”. During the second fall, the Assassins “smelled defeat and … took off for the dressing room” [reported attendance: 3,500]
3/9 Battle to the finish: The Kentuckians beat the Assassins in two straight falls, winning the second fall by disqualification when the Assassins “tossed Big Boy Brown out of the ring.”
3/16 Texas death match: The Assassins beat the Kentuckians after one of the Kentuckians (presumably Brown) “jumped on the top rope in preparing an extra-hard splash” but “lost his balance and fell off the rope, catching one foot in the rope as he fell”, rendering him unable to continue.
WICHITA FALLS
2/24 (the Assassins missed this card due to an automobile accident; the Lawton OK newspaper article describing the accident identified them as professional wrestlers named Tom Renesto and Jody Hamilton)
