In the 1st quarter of 1978, Ernie Ladd debuts with a big push, Orndorff feuds with a brute named the Brute, the Louisiana Tag Team titles are reborn & more!

NEW TO THE TERRITORY THIS QUARTER
(wrestlers either making their first-ever appearance as a regular in this territory, their first appearance since Sep 1959, or appearing in a significantly different role/gimmick than when they were here previously)
ALI BEY – While there was a wrestler with the same name who competed in the 1950s and the first half of the 60s (including a couple of runs in this territory), this was a different Ali Bey. This one was sometimes billed as The Turk and sometimes as Ali Bey. He is believed to have started his career in 1968. Bey spent much of his time in Canada, though he also wrestled for several U.S.-based territories and had at least one stint in Puerto Rico. While there, he won the WWC North American Tag Team titles with Bull Gregory (who was Dan Johnson, another newcomer to this territory during the quarter; see below).
THE AVENGER – Reggie Parks began his wrestling career in the mid-50s under his real name. After several years wrestling mainly on the west coast and the western half of Canada, Parks settled in the upper Midwest, spending several years wrestling for the Duseks in Nebraska and for the AWA. In 1974, he debuted in Mid-Atlantic as a masked wrestler named “The Avenger”, a gimmick he used in a few other territories (including here). Parks, who passed away in October 2021, was also known as the “King of Belts”, one of the most prolific and successful belt designers in wrestling history.
DAN JOHNSON – A second-generation wrestler from Canada, Dan was the son of Bull Johnson. Dan started wrestling in the mid-70s and worked for several Canadian territories as well as brief stints for Gulas, Central States, Amarillo, and here. In the 80s he wrestled as Bullwhip Johnson in Canada and as Battleship Johnson in Southern California. He also wrestled at the 1990 edition of Starrcade, teaming with Troy Montour in the Pat O’Connor Memorial International Tag Team Tournament against Victor Zangiev and Salman Hashimokov.
ERNIE LADD – Ladd had made a handful of appearances here in previous years, but this was his first full-time stint in the territory, debuting at the very tail end of 1977. A month earlier he had been wrestling for the Culkins, who had just started their own territory in Mississippi after splitting from McGuirk. Ladd was born in the small town of Rayville, LA, about 20 miles east of Monroe. Interestingly, Ladd may not be the most famous athlete from Rayville, as it was also the birthplace of NBA Hall of Famer Elvin Hayes. After playing football at Grambling State, Ladd was drafted in 1961 by the Chicago Bears of the NFL and the San Diego Chargers of the AFL, choosing to sign with the Chargers. He played pro football for seven seasons and began wrestling in the offseason in 1963. After knee problems cut his football career short, he began wrestling full-time in 1969.
ROLANDO ELIZALDE – This wrestler spent about three weeks wrestling in prelims and then disappeared. I haven’t been able to find anything else on him, other places he wrestled or any info whatsoever. It’s always possible this was someone who is better known under a different ring name, but as of now, nobody seems to know anything about him.
SKIP YOUNG – Born in 1951 in Houston, Galton Young turned pro in late 1974, wrestling as Skip Young in East Texas and in Mexico for CMLL before going to Portland in the fall of 1975. After numerous stints in territories mostly based in the south, Young debuted in Florida in June 1979 as the masked Sweet Brown Sugar. He had 2 runs as the Southern Heavyweight champion there and also held the promotion’s version of the North American Tag Team titles with Bruce (Butch) Reed.

CHAMPIONS & KNOWN TITLE CHANGES
NOTE: Title histories are sometimes not “linear”; title changes can be acknowledged in one market but not others, or perhaps acknowledged in others at a later date. Also, the concept of titles being “held up” can sometimes refer to a town-specific angle to build to a rematch and may not be acknowledged in other markets. This represents my best effort to accurately portray title histories using the tools now available. While I do try to put these histories together on my own, I often refer to wrestling-titles.com
NORTH AMERICAN TITLE
Dick Murdoch was the champion at the beginning of the quarter. Ernie Ladd won the title from Murdoch on February 14th in Shreveport.
U.S. TAG TEAM TITLES
The official titleholders at the beginning of the quarter are unclear. Former champions Doctor X & Pork Chop Cash had split up and had a few singles matches where the winner would be able to ‘claim’ both belts. X won those matches but seemed to have different partners for title matches in December. The earliest reference to the titles in 1978 is on February 1st, when X & the Brute are billed as champions. Ray Candy & Steven Little Bear won the titles on February 22nd in Baton Rouge. It should be noted that the match was advertised as non-title, but results indicate that the belts indeed changed hands when Candy & Little Bear won the match.
LOUISIANA TAG TEAM TITLES
The last time these titles had been acknowledged in the territory was about a decade earlier. Ray Candy & Steven Little Bear won the titles on March 24th in Lafayette by winning a one-night round robin tournament that also involved the Assassin & Scandor Akbar and Kurt Von Hess & Siegfried Stanke.

ANATOMY OF A FEUD
Here’s a look at the feud between Paul Orndorff and The Brute, looking at all the known matches between them with stipulations noted where available. The matches are arranged chronologically by city, so you can easily see which cities had multiple matches between them.
Keep in mind that some newspapers didn't list details, so just because a match isn't specified as a title match, we don't necessarily know for a fact that it was non-title and the same can apply for stipulation bouts.
Like Orndorff’s big feud with Ken Mantell in 1980, the angle that kickstarted this feud involved a televised arm-wrestling match. For this one, a lit candle was placed at each end of the table. As Orndorff was about to win, the Brute attacked him and slammed his head down onto one of the candles, “burning” his eye.
