The McGuirk/Watts Wrestling Almanac - Chapter 27 (1966 Q2)

Welcome to Chapter 27 of The McGuirk/Watts Wrestling Almanac, an in-depth data-driven look at the wrestling territory run by Leroy McGuirk (and later, Bill Watts).

Each chapter covers a three-month period of time and will list our exclusive statistics:
1) Rankings. A look at the top acts in the territory during the quarter based on their average position on the cards and how many weeks they were here
2) SPOT (Statistical Position Over Time) Ratings, which measure a wrestlers average position on the cards
3) The top feuds based on FLW (Feud Length in Weeks) Score, which takes into account how many times a specific matchup occurs and where on the card those matches take place, scaled to represent an approximate length of time that the feud lasted in the territory

In addition, we list the advertised lineups for all known house shows in the territory during the time period, an index of newcomers and other wrestlers (special attractions, women, little persons, etc) that passed through the territory, and a match-by-match, town-by-town recap of at least one feud during the quarter.

THE McGUIRK/WATTS WRESTLING ALMANAC
CHAPTER 27 (1966 Q2)

Here is the roster for the quarter:

NEW TO THE TERRITORY THIS QUARTER
(wrestlers either making their first-ever appearance as a regular in this territory, their first appearance since Sep 1959, or appearing in a significantly different role/gimmick than when they were here previously)

BATTLESHIP JOHNSON – Not much is known about Battleship. His entire wrestling career seems to consist of a several-month run here, followed by a handful of bookings in West Texas, then a few weeks working for Gulas in 1967 and that’s all we know. It is always possible he wrestled under another name, but he had a unique enough look being billed as 6’5” and having numerous tattoos that if he had used another name, someone should have made the connection by now. In various clippings from newspapers, Battleship was said to be a former Navy sailor who had been stationed in Japan for four years, where he learned not only karate, but also a “special type of defense” taught to him by Buddhist monks. He was able to break bricks and cement blocks with his hands and would sometimes demonstrate this prior to his matches. It was also said that one of his hands was twice the size of the other due to built-up callouses from all the fighting and brick-breaking he did.

FREDDIE BARON – Baron, who sometimes was billed as “Fred” and sometimes as “Freddie”, wrestled from 1960 to 1976. He spent most of his career wrestling out of the Vancouver and Portland offices, but also wrestled in Arizona and southern California as well as a five-month stint here.

KRUSHER KOWALSKI – Bertram Roland Smith wrestled under a variety of names, most notably The Big K and Stan Kowalski. He came here in the spring and teamed with the Great Matsuda. When Matsuda left for a tour of Japan, Kowalski stuck around a couple more weeks, then went to Amarillo briefly before returning to the AWA, which was generally his home base. He wouldn’t return here until 1973, when he again was teamed up with a Japanese wrestler (Kim Duk aka Tiger Chung Lee).

THE MEDICS – This version of the Medics consisted of Tony Gonzales and … well, this is where things get interesting. The current ‘wrestling historical record’, such as it is, lists Donald Lortie as Tony’s partner here. However, Lortie appears to be wrestling in Gulf Coast (using the name Pierre DeGlane) at the same time the Medics are here. Further, when the Medics finish up their run here, they are unmasked and identified as Gonzales and someone named Dan Ellis (with one exception: it appears Gonzales was either injured or left the territory before the team was supposed to have finished up; on a show in Joplin the Medics were Ellis & Roberto Pico). He then worked a couple of matches unmasked and billed as Dan Ellis. There is no other information on a wrestler using the ring name of Dan Ellis.

PEPI GOMEZ – I believe this was the wrestler who primarily used the spelling “Pepe Gomez” during his career in the 60s and early 70s. He had been wrestling in East Texas before coming here in May. He wrestled mostly in various southern territories stretching from Florida to Arizona.

ROBERTO PICO – Roberto had been wrestling since at least the mid-40s, using the ring names of Bobby Lane, Pancho Villa, and Roberto Pico in various territories. He held titles in Gulf Coast, Florida, Stampede, and Central States. He was married to woman wrestler Ann Laverne; the two had a son who wrestled as Bobby Pico and Bobby Lane Jr from the late 60s through the early 70s.

TOR KAMATA – Born in 1937 in Hawaii, McRonald Kamaka joined the Air Force and was stationed in Turkey in 1959. Kamaka had wrestled in high school and while in Turkey he got an opportunity to train further with some Turkish wrestlers. When he returned to Hawaii, Ed Francis convinced him to turn pro. He used his real name when wrestling in Hawaii and used the ring name of Dr. Moto in the upper Midwest. As Tor Kamata, he wrestled throughout the U.S. and Canada. In Canada, he was a 3-time North American champion for Stampede. He also won titles in Japan and New Zealand later in his career

CHAMPIONS & KNOWN TITLE CHANGES

NOTE: Title histories are sometimes not “linear”; title changes can be acknowledged in one market but not others, or perhaps acknowledged in others at a later date. Also, the concept of titles being “held up” can sometimes refer to a town-specific angle to build to a rematch and may not be acknowledged in other markets. This represents my best effort to accurately portray title histories using the tools now available. While I do try to put these histories together on my own, I often refer to wrestling-titles.com and wrestlingdata.com

NWA WORLD JUNIOR HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE
Joe McCarthy was the champion at the beginning of the quarter. Danny Hodge beat McCarthy on 5/3/66 in Little Rock, AR to win the title. The newspaper article recapping the matches stated that this “marked the first time that a championship belt changed hands at [sic] Little Rock”. This is worth noting because it could be considered further evidence disputing the claim that Lorenzo Parente “won” the title in Little Rock the previous year (see http://www.chartingtheterritories.com/2021/01/q-when-is-title-change-not-title-change.html for more information).

U.S. TAG TEAM TITLES
The last time these titles had been acknowledged in the territory was the previous fall when Don & Jim Fargo were recognized as champions. Tournaments were held in several cities in May, with the Assassins winning them (each town had its own “final” match, with the Assassins “winning” the titles on May 6th in Oklahoma City, May 9th in Tulsa, May 10th in Little Rock, May 11th in Springfield, and May 12th in Wichita Falls).

MISSOURI JUNIOR HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE
Lorenzo Parente was the champion at the beginning of the quarter. The only mention of the title during the second quarter was on 4/23 in Joplin, when Parente defended the title against Ramon Torres. While results from the card are currently unavailable, wrestling-titles.com lists Torres as having won the title on the show. Torres left the territory at the end of May, and I don’t believe this title was ever mentioned again.

Here are the top feuds in the territory for the quarter:

ANATOMY OF A FEUD

Here’s a look at the feud between Danny Hodge and Joe McCarthy, looking at all of the known matches between them with stipulations noted where available. The matches are arranged chronologically by city, so you can easily see which cities had multiple matches between them.

Keep in mind that some newspapers didn't list details, so just because a match isn't specified as a title match, we don't necessarily know for a fact that it was non-title and the same can apply for stipulation bouts.

After recovering from his car accident and returning to the ring in mid-March, Danny Hodge was put into a tag team feud against with Tiny Smith (replacing Big Boy Brown, who had been “injured” as he was leaving the territory) against the Assassins. From there, he resumed his feud with Joe McCarthy. McCarthy had turned heel at the end of 1965 (possibly during a televised tag team match where he was teaming with Hodge) and had a few matches against Hodge before the car accident. By the time Hodge returned, McCarthy had won the NWA World Junior Heavyweight title from Lorenzo Parente, so when the Hodge-McCarthy feud resumed it now had even bigger stakes. After losing the title to Hodge, McCarthy wrestled the following night in Fort Smith, AR and then seems to have retired (save for a couple of matches he may have worked in Kentucky in 1970 for Nick Gulas).

OKLAHOMA CITY
12/17/65 No referee: Hodge won
4/15 NWA World Junior Heavyweight title: Hodge won by disqualification
4/29 NWA World Junior Heavyweight title: McCarthy won

LITTLE ROCK
12/28/65 No referee: Hodge won (McCarthy won the first fall when he “disabled Hodge by using a piece of rope he had brought into the ring”, Hodge won the second fall “thanks to the help of ringsiders who provided him with a rope and a leather slapper”, and Hodge won the third fall with a flying press)
4/19 NWA World Junior Heavyweight title: McCarthy won (in the third fall, Hodge “grabbed McCarthy in an airplane spin” but McCarthy held on to the ropes and as Hodge tried to pull him loose, “they both hit the canvas with McCarthy on top”)
5/3 NWA World Junior Heavyweight title: Hodge beat McCarthy to win the title

SPRINGFIELD
12/29/65 No referee: Hodge won (the first fall was won by Hodge with an Oklahoma roll, McCarthy won the second fall after using a “piece of rope … to choke Hodge into submission”, and Hodge won the third fall after taking the rope from McCarthy and using it on him) [attendance reported as “the season’s largest crowd, more than 2000 persons”]

WICHITA FALLS
12/30/65 No referee: results not available
1/13 NWA World Junior Heavyweight title, two referees: results not available (Hodge’s car accident occurred after this show as Hodge was driving back to Oklahoma)

JOPLIN
4/16 NWA World Junior Heavyweight title: Hodge won by disqualification (Danny won the first fall with a “thunderous” knee lift, McCarthy evened things up after kicking Hodge in the stomach, and McCarthy was disqualified in the third fall for “kneeing Hodge in the throat”)

TULSA
1/10 McCarthy won
4/18 NWA World Junior Heavyweight title: McCarthy won

FREDERICK, OK
4/21 NWA World Junior Heavyweight title: results not available

MONROE
4/26 NWA World Junior Heavyweight title: McCarthy won
