McGuirk Wrestling Territory: April 1972

Here's a look at the McGuirk wrestling territory in April 1972: Doctor X is unmasked, Tom Jones becomes a single (which WAS unusual), a look at the feud between Bill Watts and Dale Lewis & more!

Here are the SPOT Ratings for the month. Instead of showing each week separately, I am now showing one chart for the month which contains all of the weekly numbers.

COMINGS AND GOINGS

Newcomers to the territory this month are babyfaces Chuck Bowman and Steve Hagen and heels Tom Bradley and Don Duffy.

This was Duffy's return to the area after spending about two months in Florida. Bradley was winding down his career and wrestling mostly on a part-time basis while also working here as a referee, but was booked just enough during April to be considered a "regular" on the roster.

Leaving the territory during the month were babyfaces Billy Red Lyons, Vic Muehler, Bob Boyer and Argentina Zuma and heels Doctor X and Mark Starr.

Red Lyons goes to East Texas, Muehler (aka Vic Rossitani) goes to Ontario for Dave McKigney and Boyer (aka Bobby Bold Eagle) left for a New Japan tour. Zuma's name doesn't appear anywhere else until November when he returns here.

In his final two weeks in the territory, Doctor X faced both Danny Hodge and Ivan Putski in major stipulation matches, including several bouts with his mask at stake. He lost those bouts and unmasked to reveal Jim Osborne. Osborne had been wrestling here as Doctor X since January of 1971, so his being unmasked was a pretty big deal. Starr (brother of Ricki Starr) next shows up working for Joe Dusek in Nebraska.

Other wrestlers not listed in the SPOT Ratings: Dennis O'Brien, Dory Funk Jr, Gino Caruso, Jim Garvin, Joe Hosey, Ken Nichols, Mike Paidousis, Pancho Lopez, Suni War Cloud, Tom Thomas and women wrestlers Dawn Lemke, Kay Noble, Lilly Thomas and Sandy Parker.

Dory Jr. came in for one appearance, an NWA World Heavyweight title defense against Danny Hodge on April 4th in Monroe LA. Jim Garvin is primarily serving as manager for "brother" Terry Garvin but teamed with Terry in a handicap match against Ivan Putski on April 25th in Alexandria LA. It should also be noted that Bruce Swayze is serving as Eric the Red's manager while wrestling regularly.

The women wrestlers came in for two weeks in the latter part of the month. They were usually split up with Lemke and Noble working in one town and Thomas and Parker working the other. They would wrestle in singles bouts or in mixed tags. On April 27th in Chalmette, however, the women all worked together, with Lemke & Parker teaming up to face Noble & Thomas.

Here are the "Apter-mag style" Rankings for the month. While I usually list wrestlers in only one category, Tom Jones is listed in both the Singles and Tag Team rankings this month. He had been teaming with Billy Red Lyons, but when Lyons left the territory midway through April Jones stayed on and was positioned as a singles wrestler.

WHO'S HOT AND WHO'S NOT

Hot: Babyface Johnny Eagles and heels Bobby Hart & Lorenzo Parente, Dale Lewis and The Stomper (John Quinn aka Kentucky Butcher).

In the case of Eagles, his moving up the cards is more due to attrition on the babyface side with Billy Red Lyons and Vic Muehler leaving the territory and not necessarily indicative of a bigger push. The same can likely be said for Hart & Parente, as they had been slotted right behind Doctor X on the heel side, but with X leaving they were bumped up. Lewis most definitely was being pushed; he spent much of April feuding with Bill Watts. The Stomper was also being moved up the cards; he had won the Brass Knucks title from Watts in March and feuded with both Watts and Muehler in the early part of April.

Muehler was moved down the cards his last few weeks here. He had been feuding with Eric the Red at the end of March and also had several matches against The Stomper on his way out. After the matches with Muehler, Eric the Red is moved into a feud with Grizzly Smith and moved down the cards slightly. In the case of Gordon (also known as Evil Eye Gordon and Enforcer Luciano), he came in around the same time as The Stomper. While both were pushed initially, it seems that Stomper was given a stronger push while Gordon was kept in the mid-cards. His SPOT Rating decreased significantly during the month, falling from a .68 at the beginning of the month to a .53 the last week of April.

CH-CH-CHANGES

Role Changes: As mentioned above, Tom Jones finds himself transitioning from a tag team role to a singles role during the month when his partner Billy Red Lyons left. Also, Dale Lewis turned heel during a TV taping back in February when he turned on Bill Watts during a tag team match. The TV cycled it's way through the territory over a several week period and by the beginning of April he's working as a heel on all the house shows.

Title Changes: There appear to have been no title changes during the month. Bill Watts is the North American champion, Danny Hodge is the NWA World Junior Heavyweight champ, Bobby Hart & Lorenzo Parente are the U.S. Tag Team champions and The Stomper is the Brass Knucks champion. Some title history sources list The Stomper as having won the North America title from Watts in March with Watts regaining it in April, but I haven't seen any evidence of that in looking through the newspaper clippings. Stomper appears to have won the Brass Knucks title from Watts in March (though the Shreveport newspaper says the title change happened "two months ago in Denver").

Also, "Wrestler A defeated Wrestler B" doesn't necessarily mean it was by pinfall or submission.
