McGuirk Wrestling Territory: May 1972

Here's a look at the McGuirk wrestling territory in May 1972: Dory Funk Jr defends the NWA World title against five different opponents in five nights, a North American title switcheroo in Shreveport, the debut of the Pascagoula Plowboy & more!

Here are the SPOT Ratings for the month.

COMINGS AND GOINGS

Newcomers to the territory this month are babyfaces Dennis Stamp, George Strickland, Pancho Lopez and the Pascagoula Plowboy and heels Alex Perez and Gypsy Joe Rosario.

Stamp, perhaps best known nowadays for his appearance in the movie Beyond the Mat, turned pro in August 1971 after being trained by Verne Gagne. After several months working for Verne Gagne and also for Joe Dusek, Stamp came here. Strickland had been wrestling in Florida and may have also had a brief stint in Mid-Atlantic before coming here. He trained his son-in-law Dr. Sam Sheppard, the real life doctor who inspired the TV series (and later the Harrison Ford movie) The Fugitive, for a few pro wrestling matches as a novelty attraction. The Pascagoula Plowboy was Stan Frazier aka Plowboy Frazier aka Uncle Elmer. In some cities in this territory he was billed as the Mississippi Plowboy while in others he was the Pascagoula Plowboy. He had been wrestling in Gulf Coast prior to coming here.

Both Pancho Lopez and Gypsy Joe Rosario came here from East Texas. Lopez also wrestled as Pedro Lopez among other ring names over the course of his career, while Rosario also used the names Pancho Rosario, Pancho Valdez and Isaac Rosario among others. Perez came in from Amarillo.

Leaving the territory during the month were babyface Joe Corea and heels Bruce Swayze, Chuck Karbo, Eric the Red and Tom Bradley.

Corea's next known whereabouts are in the summer as the masked El Olympico in the WWWF. Swayze and Eric the Red both go to Ontario for Dave McKingney's Big Bear Promotions. Karbo went to Arizona; it appears he finished up his 10-year career as a pro later in the year. Similarly, Bradley seems to have retired when he finished up here.

Taking a closer look at Eric the Red's run here, he spent his first several weeks in the mid-cards where his most notable opponent was Ramon Torres, who was finishing up in the territory. He moved to the upper mid-cards as he began a feud with Vic Muehler. Again, this was a case of a wrestler putting the 'new guy' over before leaving the territory, as it marked the end of Muehler's run here. This series of wins elevated Eric to main eventer status, and as the feud with Muehler finished up, a new one with Grizzly Smith began. Eric's SPOT Rating peaked with a .85 in late March. Grizzly got the upper hand in their feud and Eric spent his last few weeks here in the upper mid-cards.

Other wrestlers not listed in the SPOT Ratings: Chuck Bowman, Dory Funk Jr, Jim Garvin, Pat O'Connor and Tommy Tate and women wrestlers Dawn Lemke, Donna Christantello, Kay Noble, Lilly Thomas, Sandy Parker and Susan Green. While he didn't wrestle here, Ernie Ladd was booked to serve as a special referee on May 2nd in Monroe.

NWA World Heavyweight kingpin Dory Funk Jr was in for the first week of May, defending against Danny Hodge in Tulsa, Dale Lewis in Little Rock, Bill Watts in Jackson, the Stomper in Chalmette and Bob Sweetan in Lafayette. Looking at the results I have, he and Hodge wrestled to a draw and he defeated Lewis and the Stomper (results from Jackson and Lafayette are not available). O'Connor teamed with Tom Jones in Tulsa to beat the Stomper & Terry Garvin. It's very possible O'Connor also worked as a special referee for some of the World title bouts during the week, as that normally was the M.O. when a former champ came in the same week as the current champ.

Jim Garvin continues to serve as Terry Garvin's manager but wrestled several bouts this month, many of them handicap matches or tag bouts where he teamed with Terry.

CH-CH-CHANGES

Role Changes: The team of Ivan Putski & Ken Mantell proved to be short-lived, as they transitioned back to mostly singles bouts this month. Their teaming was likely done as a stop-gap measure when Billy Red Lyons left the territory and perhaps also to give Mantell the rub of teaming with an established star. This left US Tag Team champs Bobby Hart & Lorenzo Parente as the only regular tag team in the territory in May.

Title Changes: The North American title changed twice in May, with Dale Lewis winning it from Bill Watts on May 15th in Shreveport and Watts winning it back on May 22nd, also in Shreveport. Grizzly Smith was the special referee for the bout on the 22nd.

Here are the FEUD Scores for the month.

Looking at the chart above, a number of matches between mid-carders have high FEUD Scores this month. This is an anomaly, as we generally tend to see the main eventers higher on these charts. I think part of it is due to the territory not having a 'regular' babyface tag team during the month. We end up with Hart & Parente facing various different combinations of babyface teams, which gives those babyfaces less opportunities for frequent singles bouts against the other top heels.

I have listed "Pascagoula Plowboy in battle royal" as a standalone match. Keep in mind that we use the cards as they are advertised to determine the 'importance' of specific wrestlers and bouts. On many cards this month, Plowboy's presence in a battle royal was prominently featured in the advertisement, whereas the rest of the wrestlers in the battle royal had other matches earlier in the evening. Similar to how Andre the Giant or Haystack Calhoun's presence in a battle royal is indicative of them being the "draw", Plowboy being in the battle royal is a prominently featured event on these cards and is treated as such.

ANATOMY OF A FEUD

This month we'll continue looking at the feud between Bill Watts and Dale Lewis, looking at all of the known matches between them with results and stipulations noted where available.

Keep in mind that some newspapers didn't list details, so just because a match isn't specified as a title match we don't necessarily know for a fact that it was non-title and the same can apply for stipulation bouts. Also, "Wrestler A defeated Wrestler B" doesn't necessarily mean it was by pinfall or submission.

May 1 Shreveport LA: Dale Lewis defeated Bill Watts in a no-disqualification grudge match
May 8 Tulsa OK: Bill Watts defeated Dale Lewis in a North American title match
May 14 Oklahoma City OK: Bill Watts vs Dale Lewis in a North American title match; Grizzly Smith special referee
May 15 Shreveport LA: Dale Lewis defeated Bill Watts to win the North American title
May 18 Chalmette LA: Bill Watts defeated Dale Lewis
May 22 Shreveport LA: Bill Watts defeated Dale Lewis to win the North American title; Grizzly Smith special referee
