The McGuirk/Watts Wrestling Almanac - Chapter 5 (Q4 1960)

Welcome to Chapter 5 of The McGuirk/Watts Wrestling Almanac, an in-depth data-driven look at the wrestling territory run by Leroy McGuirk (and later, Bill Watts). The territory is most commonly known as Tri-State Wrestling and/or Mid-South Wrestling, though neither of those names were actually used until September 1979 when Watts split from McGuirk.

Each chapter covers a three-month period of time and will list our exclusive statistics:
1) SPOT (Statistical Position Over Time) Ratings, which measure a wrestlers average position on the cards
2) FEUD (Frequent Encounters Using Data) Scores, which measure the frequency and breadth of a series of matches between the same wrestlers (or tag teams)
In addition, we list the advertised lineups for all known house shows in the territory during the time period, along with an index of newcomers and other wrestlers (special attractions, women, midgets, etc) that passed through the territory.

NEW TO THE TERRITORY THIS QUARTER

AL GALENTO – Al “Spider” Galento was a mainstay in the area dating back to his first appearances in 1949. He helped train, and later teamed with, Mario Galento (real name Bonnie Lee Boyette) throughout the southeast. Al is also credited as the trainer of Tommy Gilbert and Bill Ash among others.

DICK BEATTIE – Two-time NCAA wrestling champ at Oklahoma State and member of the 1956 U.S. Olympic freestyle wrestling team (though he did not compete due to an emergency appendectomy three weeks prior). Beattie’s career as a pro never really seemed to take off and only lasted a few years.

HANS BRUNER – Mostly wrestled as Danny Marcello and Eric Von Krupp over the years but used the name Hans Bruner for his one and only stint for McGuirk. In the early 60s he used the name Joe Pizzatola in East Texas; on some occasions he was billed as Joe Pizza.

JOHNNY WALKER – Johnny “Rubberman” Walker is best known as the masked Mr. Wrestling II. Debuting in 1956 in Hawaii, he wrestled all over the U.S. using his real name (and one stint as The Grappler in Florida) for almost two decades. He first donned the Wrestling II persona in 1973 in Georgia. This was his only stint as Johnny Walker in the McGuirk territory; he would return as Wrestling II in 1979.

PAUL BUNYAN – real name Max Palmer; sources list him as being anywhere from 7’7” to 8’6” tall (with most listing him as either 7’7” or 8’2”). He and Jorge (Giant) Gonzalez are believed to have been the two tallest professional wrestlers in history.

PRINCE MAIAVA – This was Neff Maiava, not to be confused with Peter Maivia. He spent most of his career in Hawaii and on the west coast. After his wrestling career he started a tree-trimming business in Hawaii and wrote several children’s books, including one in 1997 titled Da Grouchy Moocher Boogie Man.

TREACH PHILLIPS – Treach was short for “Treacherous”; he was said to have been Elvis Presley’s favorite wrestler.
