McGuirk Wrestling Territory: May 1976

Here's a look at the McGuirk wrestling territory in May 1976: the junior heavyweights are coming, Kox collects a bounty but is fined an amount greater than said bounty, two tag title changes & more!

Here are the SPOT Ratings for the month.

COMINGS AND GOINGS

Newcomers to the territory this month are babyfaces Nelson Royal, Silento Rodriguez and Ted Heath and heels Bobby Jaggers, Gene Lewis, Randy Tyler and Siegfried Stanke.

We are seeing an influx of junior heavyweights (Ron Starr, Nelson Royal, Ted Heath) into the area ever since Danny Hodge's career ending auto accident in March. In the coming months they (and others) will have a series of matches as part of a tournament to fill the vacant NWA World Junior Heavyweight title.

Royal had been wrestling for the IWA in North Carolina while Heath had been in Gulf Coast. I can't find any records for Silento since he left here the previous September. Gene Lewis (Gene Petit aka Cousin Luke) had been in Gulf Coast and then worked for Gulas for a couple of weeks before coming here. Stanke had been wrestling for All-Star in Vancouver. Jaggers and Tyler both came in from Amarillo.

Leaving the territory during the month were babyfaces Calypso Joe, Dick Murdoch and Sonny King and heels Alex Perez, Bob Slaughter, Buddy Roberts, Jerry Brown, Mr Ito and Waldo Von Erich.

Murdoch left for a month for a tour with All Japan. Murdoch was "injured" in an angle to explain his absence, with Killer Karl Kox throwing a foreign substance into his eyes. This enabled Kox to collect a $2,000 bounty Terry Funk had placed on Murdoch. However, promoter Leroy McGuirk "fined" Kox (as well as Bob Sweetan and Buck Robley, who presumably aided Kox in the attack) the sum of $2,500; so it was actually a net loss for Kox in the storyline. I believe this also led to a falling out between Kox & Sweetan and their manager Robley which would play out over a few weeks.

Sonny King went to the IWA (North Carolina). Calypso Joe goes to Gulf Coast but disappears after a couple of weeks there. At this point in time I am unaware of any other ring names he may have used or if this is someone who was better known under a different name.

Perez works a couple of shows in Amarillo and then goes to Florida. Slaughter seems to be out of action until the fall, when he goes to Central States. He continued to use "Bob Slaughter" for a few more years; his first appearances as Sgt. Slaughter don't come until 1980. Roberts & Brown go to New Japan and then to Florida. Mr Ito (Umanosuke Ueda) went to Japan for IWE. Waldo Von Erich went to Canada, wrestling mostly for Maple Leaf Wrestling but also for Big Bear Promotions.

The following charts look at the SPOT Ratings and FEUD Scores for Sonny King, Bob Slaughter, the team of Buddy Roberts & Jerry Brown and Waldo Von Erich during their runs here. You can see them being moved up the cards gradually over time, all eventually reaching main event status, as well as who they feuded with at various points in time during their time in the territory.

Other wrestlers not listed in the SPOT Ratings: Alan Klein, Dick the Bruiser, El Diablo, George Strickland, Greg Valentine, Jack Curtis Jr, Johnny Eagles, the Medic, Sir Oliver Humperdink, Terry Funk and Tommy Tate and women midget wrestlers Diamond Lil and Princess Little Dove.

Dick the Bruiser came in for one shot, teaming with Bill Watts in Chalmette on May 13th to take on Dick Murdoch & Killer Karl Kox. Valentine came in for three shows, including matches against NWA World Heavyweight champion Terry Funk in Tulsa and Shreveport. Valentine had just left the territory in April, going to Georgia, but for whatever reason was brought back for this brief stint. In addition to the two matches with Valentine, Funk also faced Murdoch in Jackson, Bob Griffin in North Little Rock and Ron Starr in Lafayette. I believe the angle was that Funk was doing anything and everything he could to avoid defending the title against Watts, as he had a bounty out on Watts in addition to the previously mentioned one on Murdoch.

Humperdink was managing Buddy Roberts and Jerry Brown, but as part of them finishing up their run here he was "forced" to wrestle. On some occasions he teamed up with them in six-man tags, but he also had singles bouts against opponents such as Grizzly Smith, Ted DiBiase and Bob Griffin. Diamond Lil and Princess Little Dove came in for two weeks at the end of May, working exclusively in singles bouts against one another.  They generally worked in the middle of the cards and had a SPOT Rating of .57

CH-CH-CHANGES

Role Changes: With Bob Slaughter exiting the area, Buck Robley returned to singles action during the month. With Roberts & Brown also leaving the territory, newcomers Bobby Jaggers & Randy Tyler were the only regular tag team on the roster at the end of May.

Title Changes: Dick Murdoch & Ted DiBiase won the US Tag Team titles from Bob Slaughter & Buck Robley on April 28th in Fort Smith, AR. Murdoch & DiBiase then lost the titles to Bob Sweetan & Killer Karl Kox on May 11th in Shreveport. Murdoch, DiBiase, Sweetan and Kox are still primarily positioned as singles wrestlers on most of the house shows this month.

Bank Account Changes: Numerous matches this month had financial stipulations above and beyond the norm. While this was a common hook/angle for promoters over the years, they are way more prevalent than normal this month. Ted DiBiase and Killer Karl Kox had been having matches throughout the territory for several weeks at this point, with Kox vowing to defeat DiBiase in a specified time limit or else he would forfeit the money. DiBiase would last the time limit and "win" the money. Then the following week in the same town Kox would up the stakes and DiBiase would often win the money again. With DiBiase getting all this money from Kox week after week, he probably invested it wisely and that's how he became "The Million Dollar Man"!

Here are the FEUD Scores for the month.

ANATOMY OF A FEUD

This month we'll look at the feud between Bob Griffin and Ron Starr, looking at all of the known matches between them with results and stipulations noted where available.

Keep in mind that some newspapers didn't list details, so just because a match isn't specified as a title match we don't necessarily know for a fact that it was non-title and the same can apply for stipulation bouts. Also, "Wrestler A defeated Wrestler B" doesn't necessarily mean it was by pinfall or submission.

May 6 North Little Rock AR: Bob Griffin vs Ron Starr in a challenge match
May 11 Baton Rouge LA: Bob Griffin vs Ron Starr in a special one-fall match with a $100 bonus added by Griffin should Starr beat him
May 16 Houma LA: Bob Griffin vs Ron Starr
May 18 Baton Rouge LA: Ron Starr defeated Bob Griffin in a return grudge match
May 21 Lafayette LA: Bob Griffin vs Ron Starr
May 23 Alexandria LA: Bob Griffin vs Ron Starr
May 25 Baton Rouge LA: Ron Starr defeated Bob Griffin in a no-disqualification match
May 28 Lafayette: Bob Griffin vs Ron Starr
