The McGuirk/Watts Wrestling Almanac - Chapter 6 (Q1 1961)

Welcome to Chapter 6 of The McGuirk/Watts Wrestling Almanac, an in-depth data-driven look at the wrestling territory run by Leroy McGuirk (and later, Bill Watts). The territory is most commonly known as Tri-State Wrestling and/or Mid-South Wrestling, though neither of those names were actually used until September 1979 when Watts split from McGuirk.

Each chapter covers a three-month period of time and will list our exclusive statistics:
1) SPOT (Statistical Position Over Time) Ratings, which measure a wrestlers average position on the cards
2) FEUD (Frequent Encounters Using Data) Scores, which measure the frequency and breadth of a series of matches between the same wrestlers (or tag teams)
In addition, we list the advertised lineups for all known house shows in the territory during the time period, along with an index of newcomers and other wrestlers (special attractions, women, midgets, etc) that passed through the territory.

NEW TO THE TERRITORY THIS QUARTER

ANTONE LEONE – Hailing from the town of Oyster Bay NY, Antone “Ripper” Leone had a career that lasted almost three decades. He had several stints here over the years dating back to 1946.

GEORGE GRANT – This was Grant’s first of two stints here; the second one occurred in 1971. He sometimes billed himself as “Gorgeous” George Grant, though there is no relation to George Wagner.

MIKE CLANCY – Clancy, a pro since 1949, had last wrestled here in February 1958 when he dropped the NWA World Junior Heavyweight title to Angelo Savoldi to end his second run with that title. He also had tag team title runs with George Becker in Mid-Atlantic.

NELSON ROYAL – This was Royal’s second stint here, the first being a short run in 1957. This time around he was billed as “Mr. Nelson Royal”.

PEPPER MARTIN – Martin worked his way through several territories over the years since his pro debut in 1959. A friendship with wrestler-turned-actor Woody Strode opened doors to an acting career as well, with Martin appearing in over 20 movies between 1968 and 1989 including the original version of The Longest Yard in 1974.

SONNY MYERS – Myers wrestled for numerous territories from the mid-40s to the late-60s but spent the majority of his time in Central States. In 1953 Myers invested in a carnival operation run by Gust Karras and eventually took it over completely; Sonny Myers Amusements provided attractions for numerous county fairs in the Midwest for decades. His refusal to pay talent fees to Pinkie George and/or the NWA for booking wrestlers on the fair shows led to Myers claiming he was blackballed. He sued George & the NWA, though the jury found in favor of the defendants.
