The McGuirk/Watts Wrestling Almanac - Chapter 13 (Q4 1962)

Welcome to Chapter 13 of The McGuirk/Watts Wrestling Almanac, an in-depth data-driven look at the wrestling territory run by Leroy McGuirk (and later, Bill Watts). The territory is most commonly known as Tri-State Wrestling and/or Mid-South Wrestling, though neither of those names were actually used until September 1979 when Watts split from McGuirk.

Each chapter covers a three-month period of time and will list our exclusive statistics:

1) SPOT (Statistical Position Over Time) Ratings, which measure a wrestlers average position on the cards
2) FEUD (Frequent Encounters Using Data) Scores, which measure the frequency and breadth of a series of matches between the same wrestlers (or teams)
In addition, we list the advertised lineups for all known house shows in the territory during the time period, an index of newcomers and other wrestlers (special attractions, women, midgets, etc) that passed through the territory, and a match-by-match, town-by-town recap of at least one feud during the quarter.

THE McGUIRK/WATTS WRESTLING ALMANAC
CHAPTER 13 (Q4 1962)

NEW TO THE TERRITORY THIS QUARTER
(wrestlers either making their first-ever appearance as a regular in this territory, their first appearance since Sep 1959, or appearing in a significantly different role/gimmick than when they were here previously)

THE ALASKAN – This was Jay York, one of the three wrestlers who used the Alaskan name. The other two were Mike York (no actual relation to Jay though they may have been billed as brothers occasionally) and Frank Monte. While he worked as a babyface in most of the territory, he was positioned as a heel in Wichita Falls for several weeks before turning babyface on the December 6th house show. Jay came here from East Texas. After his run ended, he wrestled in Southern California briefly in December before starting as a regular in Central States in January 1973.

BUD CODY – Sometimes wrestled as Bill (or Bulldog) Cody. This was his only stint in the McGuirk territory, spending most of his career wrestling in Canada and on the west coast. Among his most frequent opponents were both Karl and Kurt Von Steiger and Pacific Northwest mainstay Shag Thomas.

CHRIS AVEROFF – Born in Greece in 1920, Christos Mellisovas began his career in 1952, first using the ring names Chris Mellisovas and Chris Melios before taking the Averoff name when he started working for Al Haft. This was his only stint here over the course of a 13-year career from 1952 to 1965.

GORDON NELSON – An accomplished amateur wrestler in Canada, Nelson qualified for the Olympics in freestyle wrestling in both 1952 and 1956. Unfortunately, the Canadian Olympic team didn’t have the necessary funds to take wrestlers to the games; it was up to the individual qualifiers to find their own sponsors. Nelson either opted out or was unable to find a sponsor(s). His earliest pro matches were in 1953 and he traveled the world over the course of a career that lasted through the early 1980s. In 1970 he was billed as the masked Mr. Wrestling for the first time in Amarillo and would later use that gimmick in several other territories. He also worked under a mask as Mr. X #2 in Mid-Atlantic in 1977-78, teaming with Mr. X #1 (Geoff Portz).

MARIO GALENTO – Born Bonnie Lee Boyette, Galento began his wrestling career using the ring name Butch Boyette, likely due to him having worked as a butcher before turning pro. It is said that Al “Spider” Galento bestowed the Galento surname to him; they teamed up occasionally early in Mario’s career and again a decade later in Gulf Coast and Georgia. He had last wrestled for McGuirk in 1956 and came here from Gulf Coast in mid-October.

RETURNING TO THE TERRITORY THIS QUARTER

Frankie Cain, the Great Bolo (Al Lovelock), Jerry London and Louie Tillet

OTHER WRESTLERS NOT LISTED IN THE SPOT RATINGS

NATIONALLY KNOWN STARS
Bill Watts, Happy Humphrey, Tiny Smith and Wild Red Berry
One of the most important figures in the history of the territory, “Cowboy” Bill Watts’ first match for McGuirk was December 17th in Tulsa. He had wrestled occasionally for Jim Barnett’s AWA in the fall while also playing pro football with the United Football League’s Indianapolis Warriors. Watts wrestled at least two other matches for McGuirk in the same week as his Tulsa debut. According to his autobiography, he broke his hand in a bar fight right around this time and worked occasionally as a referee for McGuirk while it healed, returning to in-ring action in February 1963.

PART-TIMERS
The Bat (this may have been Paul Diamond), Bill Steddum, Earl Guess, El Cid, the Masked Marvel, Mr. X, Paul Diamond, Randy Curtis, Red McKim, Ricky Nash, Tony Neopolitan and the Untouchable
Many of these wrestlers only worked shows in the lower half of Louisiana as McGuirk made a short-lived attempt to get back in Baton Rouge and the New Orleans area.

WOMEN WRESTLERS
Ann Regan, Barbara Galento, Evelyn Stevens, Kathy Starr, Margie Ramsey and Peggy Allen
(their overall SPOT Rating was a .77 this quarter)

Here are the FEUD Scores for the quarter.

ANATOMY OF A FEUD

Here’s a look at the feud between Danny Hodge and Sputnik Monroe, looking at all of the known matches between them with results and stipulations noted where available. The matches are arranged chronologically by city, so you can easily see which cities had multiple matches between them.

Keep in mind that some newspapers didn't list details, so just because a match isn't specified as a title match, we don't necessarily know for a fact that it was non-title and the same can apply for stipulation bouts.

While Hodge and Sputnik had a handful of matches here in late 1961 (and at least once in the Gulas territory earlier that year), this was the first “feud” between the two.  The first singles bout in each city was generally set up by a tag bout with both men on opposite sides the week before. In Tulsa, for example, there was a six-man tag the previous week that saw Hodge “kicked and stomped by Sputnik Monroe when he had Frenchman Louie Tillet stretched out for the pin”.

TULSA
12/10/62 NWA World Junior Heavyweight title: Danny Hodge beat Sputnik Monroe. The newspaper reports it was a “disputed decision”. With the match tied at one fall apiece, both men’s shoulders were apparently pinned to the mat at the same time, with the referee giving the verdict to Hodge. An angered Monroe grabbed Hodge’s belt and “bolted from the ring” afterwards
12/17/62 NWA World Junior Heavyweight title: Danny Hodge beat Sputnik Monroe “before a packed audience of more than 2,000 fans”

LITTLE ROCK
12/18/62 NWA World Junior Heavyweight title: Danny Hodge defeated Sputnik Monroe, but Sputnik left the ring with Hodge’s belt afterwards
1/1/63 NWA World Junior Heavyweight title: Danny Hodge defeated Sputnik Monroe. Sputnik attempted to hit Hodge with a chair, but it instead hit the top rope, “bounced back like a boomerang and struck Monroe”, who then “went down in a heap” and Hodge pinned him

OKLAHOMA CITY
12/21/62 NWA World Junior Heavyweight title: Danny Hodge beat Sputnik Monroe
12/28/62 NWA World Junior Heavyweight title: Danny Hodge beat Sputnik Monroe
1/4/63 Ring enclosed by steel fence: Danny Hodge vs Sputnik Monroe

SPRINGFIELD
12/26/62 NWA World Junior Heavyweight title: Danny Hodge beat Sputnik Monroe by reverse decision. Sputnik pinned Hodge in the third fall by “bracing his feet on the ring ropes” but the referee reversed the decision “after a consultation with ringside officials”. Afterwards, Monroe kicked Hodge in the stomach, grabbed the title belt and “tore out the rear exit” of the venue
1/2/63 NWA World Junior Heavyweight title: Danny Hodge defeated Sputnik Monroe; this had the same finish as the 1/1 bout in Little Rock involving the chair

WICHITA FALLS
12/27/62 NWA World Junior Heavyweight title: Danny Hodge vs Sputnik Monroe
1/3/63 NWA World Junior Heavyweight title, two referees: Danny Hodge vs Sputnik Monroe

SHREVEPORT
1/7/63 Danny Hodge defeated Sputnik Monroe in a non-title match. Monroe won the first fall with an atomic drop in 11 minutes, but Hodge won the next two falls in a combined time of just eight minutes.
