Welcome to Chapter 3 of The McGuirk/Watts Wrestling Almanac, an in-depth data-driven look at the wrestling territory run by Leroy McGuirk (and later, Bill Watts). The territory is most commonly known as Tri-State Wrestling and/or Mid-South Wrestling, though neither of those names were actually used until September 1979 when Watts split from McGuirk.

GENE DuBOIS – Primarily known as “the Canadian Wildman” Dave McKigney, DuBois was Terrible Ted’s trainer and handler. Ted’s heyday was between 1958 and 1974. McKigney was killed on July 4, 1988 in the same accident that took the lives of Adrian Adonis and Victor Arko (one of the Kelly twins; his brother, William Arko, was driving the van and suffered significant injuries) when the van they were riding in swerved to avoid hitting a moose and crashed.

JACK CURTIS JR – Curtis joined his father in wrestling rings after leaving the Air Force in 1967. They may have been one of the first father/son tag teams in wrestling. His father and George Culkin (aka George Curtis) were brothers-in-law. When George & his son Gil split from McGuirk and ran their own territory in Mississippi in the late 70s, Jack Jr was tapped to promote McGuirk cards in Jackson and Vicksburg in opposition to his own family (it should be noted that Gil and Jack Jr later made amends). The Jackson shows were often held on the same night of the week, with the venues about 4 ½ miles apart.

LORENZO PARENTE – Best known for teaming with Canadian Bobby Hart as the Continental Warriors in the eary 70s, Parente defeated Danny Hodge to win the NWA World Junior Heavyweight title in January 1966 in a title switch that may have been necessitated by injuries Hodge suffered in a car accident earlier that morning while returning from a show in Wichita Falls the night before.

LUIS MARTINEZ – Martinez wrestled from the 50s through the mid 70s for numerous territories. He had been here previously for two separate stints, one in 1953 and one in 1955. Held titles in Arizona, Indiana and Detroit among other areas. Frequent opponents over the course of his career included Don Kent and the Sheik, while his frequent tag team partners included Pepper Gomez and Ricky Romero.

RAY DURAN – Duran began his career in Mexico in the late 30s, eventually coming to the U.S. and wrestling primarily in the southwest. His career wound down in the late 60s with his last known appearances being on a part-time basis for Gulas in the early 70s.

TARO MIYAKI – Hawaiian-born George Halealoha Kahaumia began his career in Hawaii and northern California billed as George Kongozan. He first started using the Taro Miyaki name in 1959. After several years bouncing around various North American territories, he settled in Hawaii in 1966 and spent the next few years wrestling there as Kongozan.

TED CHRISTY – Brother of Vic Christy, “Terrible” Ted (not to be confused with the wrestling bear named Terrible Ted who was here at the same time as Christy) teamed up with brother Vic in numerous territories over the years. He also had a number of TV and movie credits over the years, including around 20 uncredited appearances on Gunsmoke.

TONY MORELLI – Morelli came in from Amarillo, and it appears he was used as a fill-in for Angelo Savoldi after Savoldi was injured (short version: Danny Hodge’s father legit attacked Savoldi with a pen knife during a match in Oklahoma City). Morelli had been wrestling since the mid-30s, with numerous stints here and in Amarillo, Arizona and southern California among other territories.
